Recensione al volume Thrift N., Non-Representational Theory, London and New York, Routledge, 2008, 326 pp., in Rivista Geografica Italiana, CXVIII, f…

2011

Vengono riformulati i …

Products of formations of finite groups

2006

[EN] In this paper criteria for a product of formations to be X-local, X a class of simple groups, are obtained. Some classical results on products of saturated formations appear as particular cases.

On X-saturated formations of finite groups

2005

[EN] In the paper, a Frattini-like subgroup associated with a class X of simple groups is introduced and analysed. The corresponding X-saturated formations are exactly the X-local ones introduced by Förster. Our techniques are also very useful to highlight the properties and behaviour of omega-local formations. In fact, extensions and improvements of several results of Shemetkov are natural consequences of our study.

On a class of supersoluble groups

2014

A subgroup H of a finite group G is said to be S-semipermutable in G if H permutes with every Sylow q-subgroup of G for all primes q not dividing |H|. A finite group G is an MS-group if the maximal subgroups of all the Sylow subgroups of G are S-semipermutable in G. The aim of the present paper is to characterise the finite MS-groups.

Primitive subgroups and PST-groups

2014

AbstractAll groups considered in this paper are finite. A subgroup $H$ of a group $G$ is called a primitive subgroup if it is a proper subgroup in the intersection of all subgroups of $G$ containing $H$ as a proper subgroup. He et al. [‘A note on primitive subgroups of finite groups’, Commun. Korean Math. Soc. 28(1) (2013), 55–62] proved that every primitive subgroup of $G$ has index a power of a prime if and only if $G/ \Phi (G)$ is a solvable PST-group. Let $\mathfrak{X}$ denote the class of groups $G$ all of whose primitive subgroups have prime power index. It is established here that a group $G$ is a solvable PST-group if and only if every subgroup of $G$ is an $\mathfrak{X}$-group.

The identity type weak factorisation system

2008

We show that the classifying category C(T) of a dependent type theory T with axioms for identity types admits a non-trivial weak factorisation system. We provide an explicit characterisation of the elements of both the left class and the right class of the weak factorisation system. This characterisation is applied to relate identity types and the homotopy theory of groupoids.

Graphs and classes of finite groups

2013

[EN] There are different ways to associate to a finite group a certain graph. An interesting question is to analyse the relations between the structure of the group, given in group-theoretical terms, and the structure of the graph, given in the language of graph theory. This survey paper presents some contributions to this research line.

Weaving words for textile museums: the development of the linked SILKNOW thesaurus.

2022

Abstract The cultural heritage domain in general and silk textiles, in particular, are characterized by large, rich and heterogeneous data sets. Silk heritage vocabulary comes from multiple sources that have been mixed up across time and space. This has led to the use of different terminology in specialized organizations in order to describe their artefacts. This makes data interoperability between independent catalogues very difficult. To address these issues, SILKNOW created a multilingual thesaurus related to silk textiles. It was carried out by experts in textile terminology and art historians and computationally implemented by experts in text mining, multi-/cross-linguality and semanti…

Salinity gradient engines

2016

Abstract This chapter is devoted to the description of a new class of heat engines based on salinity gradient technology and able to convert low-grade heat into power. The salinity gradient power (SGP) process is employed within a closed loop composed of two different sections: (i) the SGP unit devoted to the energy production, and (ii) a regeneration unit fed by the solutions exiting from the SGP unit and able to restore the initial concentration, thus regenerating the salinity gradient. The main features, limits and perspectives of this novel heat engine are described along with an overview of the state of the art presented in the literature and an example of exergetic analysis of the cyc…

Reverse electrodialysis heat engine for sustainable power production

2017

Abstract Reverse Electrodialysis Heat Engine (REDHE) is a promising technology to convert waste heat at temperatures lower than 100 °C into electric power. In the present work an overview of the possible regeneration methods is presented and the technological challenges for the development of the RED Heat Engine (REDHE) are identified. The potential of this power production cycle was investigated through a simplified mathematical model. In the first part of the work, several salts were singularly modelled as possible solutes in aqueous solutions feeding the RED unit and the corresponding optimal conditions were recognized via an optimization study. In the second part, three different RED He…
