Organic carbon dynamics in soil particle-size separates of sandy Spodosols when forest is cleared for maize cropping

2003

Summary In southwest France, much of the forest lands on sandy Spodosols has been converted to continuous maize cropping in the last few decades. To evaluate the impacts of such change on the content and properties of the soil organic matter, we compared the amount of organic carbon and 13C natural abundance in soil and particle-size separates at three locations, selected on the basis of different contents of 0–50 μm particles (clay + silt). After three decades of cultivation, the amount of carbon from the forest pools (Cf) decreased by about 60%, attributable mainly to easily degradable material in sand-sized fractions (−70%). However, a recalcitrant residue remained in soil at a constant …

Multisensory texture exploration at the tip of the pen

2016

A tool for the multisensory stylus-based exploration of virtual textures was used to investigate how different feedback modalities (static or dynamically deformed images, vibration, sound) affect exploratory gestures. To this end, we ran an experiment where participants had to steer a path with the stylus through a curved corridor on the surface of a graphic tablet/display, and we measured steering time, dispersion of trajectories, and applied force. Despite the variety of subjective impressions elicited by the different feedback conditions, we found that only nonvisual feedback induced significant variations in trajectories and an increase in movement time. In a post-experiment, using a pa…

La Cappella Palatina di Palermo: Misura, Interpretazione, Rappresentazione

2012

Carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios of soils and grasses as indicators of soil characteristics and biological taxa

2019

Abstract The use of stable isotope techniques can assist in understanding interactions of plants with various abiotic and biotic processes. In the research, we focused on carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) isotopes because they are the most important resources influencing plant function and the biogeochemical cycles. The 13C/12C and 15N/14N ratios in plants and in soils and the relationships between these ratios and biological and environmental factors of widely distributed native C3 plants (couch grass, plantain and yarrow) collected from two sites in St. Petersburg, Russia were studied. The soil characteristics of the sites were rather different. This had a significant effect on the isotope rati…

Post-mortem alteration of diet-related enamel surface textures through artificial biostratinomy: A tumbling experiment using mammal teeth

2019

In the fossil record, teeth are often all that remains of a fossil organism. Dental microwear texture analysis (DMTA) is a common proxy for diet using dental wear features at the μm-scale, enabling comparative and quantitative assessments of various feeding traits in extant and extinct species. In extinct species, original diet-related dental wear features may be overprinted by post-mortem alteration including fluvial transport. Here we experimentally investigate the effects of mechanical alteration on diet-related 3D enamel surface texture (3DST) patterns of different mammal teeth. Post canine teeth of Equus sp., Capreolus capreolus and Otomys sp. are tumbled in sediment-water suspensio…

Unsupervised low-key image segmentation using curve evolution approach

2013

Low-key images widely exist in imaging-based systems such as space telescopes, medical imaging equipment, machine vision systems. Unsupervised low-key image segmentation is an important process for image analysis or digital measurement in these applications. In this paper, a novel active contour model with the probability density function (PDF) of gamma distribution for image segmentation is proposed. The flexible gamma distribution is used to describe both of the heterogeneous foreground and dark background in a low-key image. Besides, an unsupervised curve initialization method is also designed in this paper, which helps to accelerate the convergence speed of curve evolution. The effectiv…

Brain magnetic resonance imaging radiomics features associated with hepatic encephalopathy in adult cirrhotic patients.

2022

Abstract Purpose Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) is a potential complication of cirrhosis. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may demonstrate hyperintense T1 signal in the globi pallidi. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the performance of MRI-based radiomic features for diagnosing and grading chronic HE in adult patients affected by cirrhosis. Methods Adult patients with and without cirrhosis underwent brain MRI with identical imaging protocol on a 3T scanner. Patients without history of chronic liver disease were the control population. HE grading was based on underlying liver disease, severity of clinical manifestation, and number of encephalopathic episodes. Texture analysis was perfo…

Impact of environmental temperature on skin thickness and microvascular blood flow in subjects with and without diabetes.

2006

Glucose measurement from different skin areas might be influenced by changes in skin texture due to several environmental confounders. Our study was performed to investigate the effect of changes in ambient temperature on skin thickness and microvascular skin blood flow in subjects with and without diabetes at the lower forearm.Thirteen subjects with diabetes and seven without diabetes participated in the study. The investigations were performed in a temperature- and humidity-controlled climatic chamber (EMPA, St. Gallen, Switzerland). Starting at 25 degrees C, the environmental temperature was changed in 4 degrees C steps every 40 min. Skin thickness was measured by an ultrasonic reflectio…

Whole-body MRI radiomics model to predict relapsed/refractory Hodgkin Lymphoma: A preliminary study.

2022

Purpose A strong prognostic score that enables a stratification of newly diagnosed Hodgkin Lymphoma (HL) to identify patients at high risk of refractory/relapsed disease is still needed. Our aim was to investigate the potential value of a radiomics analysis pipeline from whole-body MRI (WB-MRI) exams for clinical outcome prediction in patients with Hodgkin Lymphoma (HL). Materials and methods Index lesions from baseline WB-MRIs of 40 patients (22 females; mean age 31.7 ± 11.4 years) with newly diagnosed HL treated by ABVD chemotherapy regimen were manually segmented on T1-weighted, STIR, and DWI images for texture analysis feature extraction. A machine learning approach based on the Extra T…

Ohmic treatment of fresh foods: Effect on textural properties

2013

The aim of this work was to verify the effects of ohmic heating (OH) treatment on texture of fresh solid food (without pre-treatment in brine solutions), subjected to constant electrical field gradient (1100 V/m; 2200 V/m; 3300 V/m). Samples of fresh potatoes, carrots and apples cut into cylinders (d = 30 mm, h = 9.0 mm) underwent OH for 60, 120, 180 and 240 seconds. Texture measurements were performed in a universal testing machine Instron 4301, with a 100 N load cell, using a single-cycle compression test. The raw untreated sample was used as control. Stress–deformation behavior of food samples processed by OH differs appreciably from raw untreated samples for all cooking times. Firmness …
