Changes in intracortical circuits of the human motor cortex following theta burst stimulation of the lateral cerebellum

2008

Objective: The cerebellum takes part in several motor functions through its influence on the motor cortex (M1). Here, we applied the theta burst stimulation (TBS) protocol, a novel form of repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) over the lateral cerebellum. The aim of this study was to test whether TBS of the lateral cerebellum could be able to modulate the excitability of the contralateral M1 in healthy subjects. Methods: Motor-evoked potentials (MEPs) amplitude, short intracortical inhibition (SICI), long intracortical inhibition (LICI) and short intracortical facilitation (SICF) were tested in the M1 before and after cerebellar continuous TBS (cTBS) or intermittent TBS (iTBS)…

Cardiovascular fitness in youth: association with obesity and metabolic abnormalities

2014

Integration of acoustical information in the perception of impacted sound sources. The role of information accuracy and exploitability.

2010

Sound sources are perceived by integrating information from multiple acoustical features. The factors influencing the integration of information are largely unknown. We measured how the perceptual weighting of different features varies with the accuracy of information and with a listener’s ability to exploit it. Participants judged the hardness of two objects whose interaction generates an impact sound: a hammer and a sounding object. In a first discrimination experiment, trained listeners focused on the most accurate information, although with greater difficulty when perceiving the hammer. We inferred a limited exploitability for the most accurate hammer-hardness information. In a second r…

The influence of local capsaicin treatment on small nerve fibre function and neurovascular control in symptomatic diabetic neuropathy.

2002

Topical treatment with capsaicin cream has been shown to be successful in the treatment of different symptomatic nerve disorders like diabetic neuropathy. Conflicting data exist on the effect of capsaicin on nerve function and neurovascular control especially in patients with diabetic neuropathy. The aim of this pilot study was to investigate the impact of topical capsaicin application on small nerve fibre function and neurovascular control. Capsaicin cream was applied to the feet of 13 patients with symptomatic diabetic neuropathy over a period of 8 weeks. Before and during the treatment period, we investigated the total symptoms score, the vibration, thermal (heat and cold) and pain perce…

Cerebral blood flow autoregulation during hypobaric hypotension assessed by laser Doppler scanning.

1994

Hypobaric hypotension was used to reduce systemic blood pressure in rats below the lower threshold of CBF autoregulation to evaluate a new laser Doppler (LD) “scanning” technique. Spontaneously breathing male Wistar Kyoto rats (n = 8) were anesthetized with chloral hydrate and the head fixed in a stereotaxic head holder. A cranial window with intact dura mater was introduced to assess local CBF (lCBF) by LD. One stationary probe served to detect rapid flow changes, whereas the second probe was used to sample lCBF recordings from many cortical locations by means of a stepping motor-controlled micromanipulator to obtain lCBF frequency histograms. Advantages are an improved spatial resolution…

Gentamicin alters Akt-expression and its activation in the guinea pig cochlea

2015

Gentamicin treatment induces hair cell death or survival in the inner ear. Besides the well-known toxic effects, the phosphatidylinositol-3 kinase/Akt (PI3K/Akt) pathway was found to be involved in cell protection. After gentamicin application, the spatiotemporal expression patterns of Akt and its activated form (p-Akt) were determined in male guinea pigs. A single dose of 0.1 mL gentamicin (4 mg/ear/animal) was intratympanically injected. The auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) were recorded prior to application and 1, 2 and 7 days afterward. At these three time points the cochleae (n=10 in each case) were removed, transferred to fixative and embedded in paraffin. Seven ears were used as u…

Benefit of hearing aid use in the elderly: the impact of age, cognition and hearing impairment

2018
