In this work we computationally explore the transient dynamics of a noisy Josephson junction (JJ). Principal purpose is to investigate the behavior of the lifetime of the superconductive state as a function of the system and noise source parameters. The relations between the emerging phenomena and the evolution of the JJ order parameter φ, that is the phase difference between the macroscopic wave functions describing the superconducting condensate in the two electrodes, is deeply investigated. SPI/INTEGRAL in-flight performance

The SPI instrument has been launched on-board the INTEGRAL observatory on October 17, 2002. SPI is a spectrometer devoted to the sky observation in the 20 keV-8 MeV energy range using 19 germanium detectors. The performance of the cryogenic system is nominal and allows to cool the 19 kg of germanium down to 85 K with a comfortable margin. The energy resolution of the whole camera is 2.5 keV at 1.1 MeV. This resolution degrades with time due to particle irradiation in space. We show that the annealing process allows the recovery of the initial performance. The anticoincidence shield works as expected, with a low threshold at 75 keV, reducing the GeD background by a factor of 20. The digital …

In Indo-European languages, letter position coding is particularly noisy in middle positions (e.g., judge and jugde look very similar), but not in the initial letter position (e.g., judge vs. ujdge). Aging and longevity: An evolutionary approach

Abstract In the chapter, first of all, the definition of aging, longevity, and the various types of aging are discussed. Then, analyzing various theories of aging, it is recalled how evolution teaches us that there should be no genes selected to promote aging. Aging is not planned but derives from the accumulation of physical damage, due to limited investments in maintenance and repair as well as from the epigenetic changes. After sufficient time has passed, the increasing levels of these defects interfere with the performance of tissues and organs, resulting in a breakdown of self-organizing system and a reduced ability to adapt to the environment.

This study investigated the effectiveness of a creative physical education (CPE) intervention on students’ perceptions of motivational climate in physical education (PE), leisure-time physical activity (PA) motivation, and overall PA. Repeated stimuli typically have shorter apparent duration than novel stimuli. Most explanations for this effect have attributed it to the repeated stimuli being more expected or predictable than the novel items, but an emerging body of work suggests that repetition and expectation exert distinct effects on time perception. The present experiment replicated a recent study in which the probability of repetition was varied between blocks of trials. As in the previous work, the repetition effect was smaller when repeats were common (and therefore more expected) than when they were rare.
