Do viscosity and wettability of fluoride varnishes affect their fluoride release?
2020
BACKGROUND: There are several brands of fluoride varnishes in the market, but the dynamics of fluoride release from each one might be different. The purpose of this study was to evaluate in vitro the release of fluorides by fluoride varnishes and to determine the correlation with viscosity and wettability. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Forty four enamel blocks 5x5 mm were randomly divided into 4 groups (n=11) ((Duraphat®, Clinpro™ White Varnish, Flúor Protector® and control). We applied 30 milligrams of fluoride varnish to each specimen. The specimens were immersed in a Calcium Phosphate solution at a pH= 6.0. We evaluated the release of fluoride, by using a selective fluoride electrode, during 6 w…
Microradiography and confocal laser scanning microscopy applied to enamel lesions formed in vivo with and without fluoride varnish treatment
1996
The aim of the present investigation was to combine 2 techniques suitable for lesion characterization: quantitative microradiography (TMR) and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) on in vivo induced lesions with and without a fluoride varnish (Duraphat(R)) treatment. Orthodontic bands were attached to premolars to be extracted for orthodontic reasons to induce enamel caries on the buccal surfaces. In the caries development part of the study, 1 tooth of each pair received at the start 1 topical application with the fluoride varnish Duraphat(R), the contralateral tooth serving as untreated control. All teeth were extracted after 4 weeks. In the caries progression part, the premolars were…
Prevention and reversal of superantigen-induced anergy by contact allergen exposure
1995
The superantigen Staphylococcal enterotoxin B (SEB) and the contact allergen 2,4-dinitrofluorbenzene (DNFB) both react with V beta 8+ T-cells delivering distinct signals. Pre-treatment with DNFB painted onto the same skin site where SEB was to be injected, prevented the induction of anergy in V beta + T-cells that was otherwise induced after SEB had been injected intradermally over a period of 2 weeks. Application of the irritant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) instead of DNFB did not exert this effect. Application of DNFB at a site distant from the site where SEB was injected resulted in a much weaker inhibitory influence on the induction of anergy by SEB. Established anergy of V beta 8+ T-ce…
Topical Application of Glycolipids from Isochrysis galbana Prevents Epidermal Hyperplasia in Mice
2017
Chronic inflammatory skin diseases such as psoriasis have a significant impact on society. Currently, the major topical treatments have many side effects, making their continued use in patients difficult. Microalgae have emerged as a source of bio-active molecules such as glycolipids with potent anti-inflammatory properties. We aimed to investigate the effects of a glycolipid (MGMG-A) and a glycolipid fraction (MGDG) obtained from the microalga Isochrysis galbana on a TPA-induced epidermal hyperplasia murine model. In a first set of experiments, we examined the preventive effects of MGMG-A and MGDG dissolved in acetone on TPA-induced hyperplasia model in mice. In a second step, we performed…
Local administration of antisense phosphorothioate oligonucleotides to the c-kit ligand, stem cell factor, suppresses airway inflammation and IL-4 pr…
2001
Abstract Background: The c-kit ligand, stem cell factor (SCF), is an important activating and chemotactic factor for both mast cells and eosinophils. These cells are known to play a fundamental role in the pathogenesis of asthma. Objective: Our goal was to analyze the functional role of SCF in the pathogenesis of asthma. Methods: The expression of SCF was targeted in fibroblasts, epithelial cells, and locally in a murine model of asthma in mice induced by ovalbumin sensitization with an antisense DNA strategy. Results: We could suppress SCF expression in NIH 3T3 fibroblasts and SP1 epithelial cells by a specific antisense phosphorothioate oligonucleotide overlapping the translation start si…
Formulation of liposomes loading lentisk oil to ameliorate topical delivery, attenuate oxidative stress damage and improve cell migration in scratch …
2021
[EN] Pistacia lentiscus L. is a sclerophyllous shrub capable of growing under harsh climatic conditions especially in the Mediterranean Basin. Different products can be obtained from this plant, such as essential oil, mastic gum or even fixed oil. The last is well known for its flavor which is mainly exploited in the food industry. Additionally, it has been traditionally used in the treatment of skin diseases, but, at the moment, any suitable formulation for skin delivery has been formulated and its biological effects was not deeply confirmed. Given that, in the present study, the lentisk oil has been formulated in liposomes at different concentrations (10, 20, 30 mg/ml) and their physicoch…
A study of the novel anti-inflammatory agent florifenine topical anti-inflammatory activity and influence on arachidonic acid metabolism and neutroph…
1995
We have evaluated the effects of the novel anti-inflammatory agent florifenine, 2-(1-Pyrrolidinyl)ethyl N-[7-(trifluoromethyl)-4-quinolyl]anthranilate, on topical inflammation in mice, free radical-mediated reactions, arachidonic acid metabolism and some neutrophil functions. Topical administration of florifenine produced dose-related anti-inflammatory activity in 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol 13-acetate (TPA)-induced ear oedema and with a lower potency, in the response induced by arachidonic acid (AA). Florifenine also inhibited neutrophil migration and PGE2 content in the inflammed ears. In human whole blood, florifenine was a potent and selective inhibitor of TXB2 generation. This anti-infla…
Emerging drugs for the treatment of vitiligo.
2020
Introduction: Vitiligo is a relatively common autoimmune depigmenting disorder of the skin. There has been a great advance in understanding the pathological basis, which has led to the development and utilization of various new molecules in treating vitiligo. This review aims at a comprehensively describing the treatments available and the emerging treatment aspects and the scope for future developments.Areas covered: This study comprehensively summarizes the current concepts in the pathogenesis of vitiligo with special focus on the cytokine and signaling pathways, which are the targets for newer drugs. JAK kinase signaling pathways and the cytokines involved are the focus of vitiligo treat…
Erratum to: Cetuximab-induced skin exanthema: prophylactic and reactive skin therapy are equally effective
2013
Purpose Treatment with cetuximab is accompanied by the development of an acneiform follicular skin exanthema in more than 80 % of patients. Severe exanthema (grade III/IV) develops in about 9–19 % of patients with the necessity of cetuximab dose reduction or cessation. Methods The study presented was a retrospective analysis of 50 gastrointestinal cancer patients treated with cetuximab in combination with either FOLFIRI or FOLFOX. One cohort of 15 patients received an in-house reactive skin protocol upon development of an exanthema. A second cohort of 15 patients received a skin prophylaxis starting with the first dose of cetuximab before clinical signs of toxicity. A third historic group o…
The influence of local capsaicin treatment on small nerve fibre function and neurovascular control in symptomatic diabetic neuropathy.
2002
Topical treatment with capsaicin cream has been shown to be successful in the treatment of different symptomatic nerve disorders like diabetic neuropathy. Conflicting data exist on the effect of capsaicin on nerve function and neurovascular control especially in patients with diabetic neuropathy. The aim of this pilot study was to investigate the impact of topical capsaicin application on small nerve fibre function and neurovascular control. Capsaicin cream was applied to the feet of 13 patients with symptomatic diabetic neuropathy over a period of 8 weeks. Before and during the treatment period, we investigated the total symptoms score, the vibration, thermal (heat and cold) and pain perce…
