La ricostruzione del sistema del popolamento rurale e dei modi di sfruttamento delle risorse, all’interno di un comprensorio geograficamente e storicamente determinato, costituisce l’oggetto della ricerca storico-topografica condotta sul territorio di Alesa. L’area di studio è centrata intorno alla città di Alesa, che ne rappresenta il fulcro, storico e geografico insieme, con l’obiettivo di tracciare il rapporto tra centro urbano e territorio circostante, fonte primaria dei mezzi di sussistenza. Intrasite Artefact Survey at Terravecchia di Cuti (Sicily)

In this paper, we discuss the results of an artefact survey and a sampling collection in the indigenous settlement of Terravecchia di Cuti, in the chora of the Greek colony of Himera (Sicily). The whole area of the town was gridded with squares of 10x10 m to isolate functional areas and identify the most interesting zones for new archaeological samples. The survey was carried out in two fields (9400 m2), counting and recording all findings. Only diagnostic pottery and figured pottery, antefixes, loom weights, millstones and so on were collected. The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between physical parameters and the spatial distribution of buried archaeological structures, using data acquired by the airborne hyperspectral sensor mivis in the visible, near infrared and thermal infrared wavelengths. The study areas are the territories of Halaesa, an important city in the Hellenistic-Roman period, and the Punic city of Mozia in Sicily. The influence of buried structures on thermal-radiative behaviour has been investigated using three parameters: Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (ndvi), thermal inertia, and Thermal Balanced Gradient. Paesaggio e memorie dell'antico: dall'archeologia all'arte contemporanea

The aim of this paper is to compare different perceptions of cultural landscapes: the landscape of a Hellenistic-Roman city, Halaesa, reconstructed through archaeological surveys, and the contemporary landscape – natural and cultural – that characterizes the Tusa river, so-called “Fiumara d’arte”, where some installations of modern art have been made. Here the modern art is integrated with the landscape, in which it seems to emphasize some peculiar aspects, result of complex interactions. This analysis allow us to use the archaeological data to understand the relationship between human activities the symbolic aspects which connect ancient and modern communities to their territories.

The Author proposes, while emphasizing the difficulty of reinterpreting an old excavation, a functional analysis of a Himerean house which has been excavated in 1972. Noting that at Himera there is not a typical house plan, he begins with the description of structures and materials from House VI 5 and proposes a sociological and economical interpretation of their domestic use. The aim of this paper is to make a critical review of the archaeological research (excavation and survey) in the hinterland of Himera, from the beginning of the last century to the present time. The research is focused on: identifying the geographical and morphological characters, and the resources of the territory in Antiquity; analysing the distribution of the settlements from the Greek to the Medioeval times, both connected to the resources and to the various aspects of the landscape. Finally, the modern and contemporary activities, such as the agricultural use of the territory.
