Identification of processes that control the stable isotope composition of rainwater in the humid tropical West-Central Africa.

2020

12 pages; International audience; This study interprets 11 years (2006 to 2016) and 6 months (March to August in 2017) of respectively monthly and daily isotopic (δD and δ18O) monitoring of rain at Douala (Cameroon), a humid tropical station in Western Africa. The main scope is to analyze the climate controls on precipitation isotopes at different timescales. Firstly, we examine the annual cycles of δ18O. Over the 11 years of survey, the annual cycle exhibits a W shape that is quite reproducible from year to year, with two minima in spring and autumn periods. Based on back trajectory calculations and remote sensing observations of water vapor isotopic composition, we show that the observed …

Exploring connectivity between spawning and nursery areas ofMullus barbatus(L., 1758) in the Mediterranean through a dispersal model

2017

Connectivity between spawning and nursery areas plays a major role in determining the spatial structure of fish populations and the boundaries of stock units. Here, the potential effects of surface current on a red mullet population in the Central Mediterranean were simulated using a physical oceanographic model. Red mullet larvae were represented as Lagrangian drifters released in known spawning areas of the Strait of Sicily (SoS), which represents one of the most productive demersal fishing-grounds of the Mediterranean. To consider the effect of inter-annual variability of oceanographic patterns, numerical simulations were performed for the spawning seasons from 1999 to 2012. The main goa…

Towards a unified analysis of cerebellum maturation and aging across the entire lifespan: A MRI analysis

2021

[EN] Previous literature about the structural characterization of the human cerebellum is related to the context of a specific pathology or focused in a restricted age range. In fact, studies about the cerebellum maturation across the lifespan are scarce and most of them considered the cerebellum as a whole without investigating each lobule. This lack of study can be explained by the lack of both accurate segmentation methods and data availability. Fortunately, during the last years, several cerebellum segmenta- tion methods have been developed and many databases comprising subjects of dif- ferent ages have been made publically available. This fact opens an opportunity window to obtain a mo…

Origin of atmospheric aerosols at the Pierre Auger Observatory using studies of air mass trajectories in South America

2014

The Pierre Auger Observatory is making significant contributions towards understanding the nature and origin of ultra-high energy cosmic rays. One of its main challenges is the monitoring of the atmosphere, both in terms of its state variables and its optical properties. The aim of this work is to analyze aerosol optical depth $\tau_{\rm a}(z)$ values measured from 2004 to 2012 at the observatory, which is located in a remote and relatively unstudied area of the Pampa Amarilla, Argentina. The aerosol optical depth is in average quite low - annual mean $\tau_{\rm a}(3.5~{\rm km})\sim 0.04$ - and shows a seasonal trend with a winter minimum - $\tau_{\rm a}(3.5~{\rm km})\sim 0.03$ -, and a sum…

Evolution Within a Bizarre Phylum: Homologies of the First Echinoderms

1998

SYNOPSIS. The Extraxial/Axial Theory (EAT) of echinoderm skeletal homologies describes two major body wall types: axial and extraxial. The latter is subdivided into perforate and imperforate regions. Each of the regions has a distinctly different source in early larval development. Axial skeleton originates in the rudiment, and develops in association with the pentaradially arranged hydrocoel according to specific ontogenetic principles. Perforate and imperforate extraxial regions are associated with the left and right somatocoels respectively, are not governed by ontogenetic principles of plate addition, and are products of the non-rudiment part of the larval body. The morphology of even t…

Visual category representations in the infant brain

2021

SUMMARYVisual categorization is a human core cognitive capacity1,2that depends on the development of visual category representations in the infant brain3–7. However, the exact nature of infant visual category representations and their relationship to the corresponding adult form remains unknown8. Our results clarify the nature of visual category representations from electroencephalography (EEG) data in 6- to 8-month-old infants and their developmental trajectory towards adult maturity in the key characteristics of temporal dynamics2,9, representational format10–12, and spectral properties13,14. Temporal dynamics change from slowly emerging, developing representations in infants to quickly e…

A saturated strategy robustly ensures stability of the cooperative equilibrium for Prisoner's dilemma

2016

We study diffusion of cooperation in a two-population game in continuous time. At each instant, the game involves two random individuals, one from each population. The game has the structure of a Prisoner's dilemma where each player can choose either to cooperate (c) or to defect (d), and is reframed within the field of approachability in two-player repeated game with vector payoffs. We turn the game into a dynamical system, which is positive, and propose a saturated strategy that ensures local asymptotic stability of the equilibrium (c, c) for any possible choice of the payoff matrix. We show that there exists a rectangle, in the space of payoffs, which is positively invariant for the syst…

Hidden Pursuits: Evaluating Gaze-selection via Pursuits when the Stimuli's Trajectory is Partially Hidden

2018

The idea behind gaze interaction using Pursuits is to leverage the human's smooth pursuit eye movements performed when following moving targets. However, humans can also anticipate where a moving target would reappear if it temporarily hides from their view. In this work, we investigate how well users can select targets using Pursuits in cases where the target's trajectory is partially invisible (HiddenPursuits): e.g., can users select a moving target that temporarily hides behind another object? Although HiddenPursuits was not studied in the context of interaction before, understanding how well users can perform HiddenPursuits presents numerous opportunities, particularly for small interfa…

Optimal Control Under Fuzzy Conditions for Dynamical Systems Associated with the Second Order Linear Differential Equations

2020

This paper is devoted to an optimal trajectory planning problem with uncertainty in location conditions considered as a problem of constrained optimal control for dynamical systems. Fuzzy numbers are used to incorporate uncertainty of constraints into the classical setting of the problem under consideration. The proposed approach applied to dynamical systems associated with the second order linear differential equations allows to find an optimal control law at each \(\alpha \)-level using spline-based methods developed in the framework of the theory of splines in convex sets. The solution technique is illustrated by numerical examples.
