The effect of age on cognitive performance of frontal patients

Age is known to affect prefrontal brain structure and executive functioning in healthy older adults, patients with neurodegenerative conditions and TBI. Yet, no studies appear to have systematically investigated the effect of age on cognitive performance in patients with focal lesions. We investigated the effect of age on the cognitive performance of a large sample of tumour and stroke patients with focal unilateral, frontal (n=68), or non-frontal lesions (n=45) and healthy controls (n=52). Cisternostomy for Traumatic Brain Injury: Pathophysiologic Mechanisms and Surgical Technical Notes

Objective Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is one of the major challenges in health care, representing the third most frequent cause of death. Current optimal management is based on a progressive, target-driven approach combining both medical and surgical treatment strategies. Here we describe cisternostomy, an emerging surgical treatment for the treatment of TBI. Objective: To determine the incidence of olfactory dysfunction after head trauma using clinical and radiologic findings, quantitative assessment, and electro-physiologic methods. Participants: A total of 190 patients with head trauma of different severity (n = 32 with mild traumatic brain injury (TBI), n = 94 with signs of moderate TBI, and n = 64 with severe TBI) 6 to 32 months prior to the study. Long-term functional results of digital replantation: A survey of 28 patients

We sought to evaluate the long-term quality of life and functional outcome of patients who underwent digital replantation after amputation. A retrospective single-center study was conducted of patients treated between January 2010 to May 2016. Twenty-eight patients who underwent successful replantation after single or multiple digital amputation were reviewed in person after at least 2years' follow-up (mean 4.6years). Total active range of motion, grip and pinch strength were assessed. Functional outcomes were evaluated using the SF-36 and DASH questionnaires. Sonography versus peritoneal lavage in blunt abdominal trauma.

The reliability of sonography and peritoneal lavage in assessing the need for immediate surgical intervention in blunt abdominal trauma was examined in a prospective study (n = 71). Statistical analysis revealed a sensitivity of 100% for peritoneal lavage compared to 84% for sonography; the accuracy was 99% versus 86%, the predictive value 97% vs. 89%. The statistical difference was significant (p less than 0.05). The results demonstrate that sonography cannot replace peritoneal lavage in the diagnosis of blunt abdominal trauma. Abstract Background The Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scales GAD-7 and GAD-2 are instruments for the assessment of anxiety. The aims of this study are to test psychometric properties of these questionnaires, to provide normative values, and to investigate associations with sociodemographic factors, quality of life, psychological variables, and behavioral factors. Emergency toe-to-hand transfer for post-traumatic finger reconstruction: A multicenter case series

Abstract Background The aim of this paper was to evaluate the outcomes of a homogenous series of emergency with a toe-to-hand transfer reconstructions with a different timing: immediate (same surgical step with the debridement), primary (in the first 24 h), early (24–72 h after the debridement) or delayed (72 h-7 days). Materials and methods Between 2001 and 2011, 31 patients received an immediate reconstruction with a toe-to-hand transfer.
