Architecture in the digital age. Evolution of language and contemporary design.

2012

The ‘computer revolution’ is the most obvious phenomenon of our time. The new capabilities introduced by the digital drafting have triggered a substantial evolution of the relationship between representation and design. The diffusion of digital technologies in Architecture has opened new frontiers in the design field, stimulating the development of a new expressive language that promotes generating complex shapes. On the other hand, the shape often becomes the main interest of the designers. Then, is the project only a formal question? Are the glamour images become the main target to which the ‘New Architecture’ aims?

Las representaciones del saber académico: Aportaciones desde la Geografía Escolar

2019

When we talk with basic education´s teachers there is an impression in the case of learning Social Sciences, and Geography in particular that these sciences are not useful for the explanation of socio-environmental and daily problems. In this research, improvement proposals are sought so that students are motivated to learn about these problems. Based on two case studies such as flood risks (and their relationship with climate change) and the problems of the rural areas, the possibilities of combining motivation for learning close to personal emotions and with their own rigor have been explored of the conceptual explanation. To validate these results, quantitative and qualitative research t…

Towards which expressive horizons?

2012

Today’s explosive developments in digital technology have also affected architecture and urban landscape. The new possibilities opened up by digital simulation have led to an increasingly strategic approach to planning, an approach based on generating scenarios, which thus represents a radical departure from traditional planning. But, up to now, what is the prevalent trend in architecture? Can we talk yet in term of language? Or have the extreme freedom in design destroyed the style? In this paper we present an analysis of the contemporary architecture, strongly influenced by digital technologies, through an objective analysis of several case-studies and we show the first result of this in …

New digital trends in current architecture. A comprehensive critical examination

2017

The research presented is about digital revolution in architecture, which has contributed to the birth of new figurative trends. The work was conducted through the definition of a framework to identify and classify architectural design elements that should be attributed to the methods and techniques of design computing, then applied to sixty prominent recent architectures which are acknowledged products of digital means. The early results suggest that a new era is coming, where the conceptual starting point of designers is often born in the digital space, taking advantage of the augmented representation skills to control and manipulate form. We will also do an overview of these new architec…

Development of innovative approaches for evaluating drought vulnerability and selecting innovative practices for managing water shortage (in Sicily)

2013

The climate, especially with regard to the precipitation and the evapotranspiration processes, plays a fundamental role in the vegetational patterns formation and modifications. The pilot project here described tries to evaluate in a quantitative way the impact of different climatic regimes (current or future) on vegetation health status and its physiological processes. In particular, an ecohydrological approach has been adopted in order to carry out an analysis of the potential climate changes influence on the vegetation state in a typical Mediterranean environment, such as the Sicilian one.

Evolutionary trends in arvicolids and the endemic murid Mikrotia - New data and a critical overview

2014

Abstract The study of evolutionary rates dates back to the work of Simpson and Haldane in the 1940s. Small mammals, especially Plio-Pleistocene arvicolids (voles and lemmings), are particularly suited for such studies because they have an unusually complete fossil record and exhibit significant evolutionary change through time. In recent decades, arvicolids have been the focus of intensive research devoted to the tempo and mode of evolutionary change and the identification of trends in dental evolution that can be used to correlate and date fossil sites. These studies have raised interesting questions about whether voles and lemmings had unique evolutionary trajectories, or show convergent …

Survey of organochlorines in Finnish watercourses by caged mussel method

2002

Monitoring organochlorine compounds with caged common lake mussels (Anodonta piscinalis) in the pulp and paper mill recipient watercourses of Finland annually from 1984 produced many statistically significant time trends. A decrease of chlorophenols and chloroguaiacols originating from chlorobleaching were observed in all recipients in parallel with the decreasing discharges from the mills. Metabolites of chlorophenols, chloroanisoles and chloroveratroles were constant. Significantly elevated PCB concentrations were measured in four watercourses. At two of these areas, the PCB concentrations were constant. In contrast, a statistically significant increase of PCB (and DDE) was found at one r…

Early detection of contamination and defect in foodstuffs by electronic nose: A review

2017

Abstract Electronic nose (e-nose) has emerged as a potential instrument in various areas of food safety assessment for rapid early detection of contamination and defect in food production chain. E-nose is an innovative measurement system designed for detecting and discriminating complex odors through mimicking the working mechanism and the principal building blocks of the mammalian olfactory system. This paper describes a literature update of the applications of the e-nose for ensuring health and safety in the food industry. Finally, its future trend, perspectives and challenging problem are also mentioned.

An empirical comparison of cross-impact models for forecasting sales

1986

Abstract This paper compares a set of four cross-impact models: (1) additive, (2) likelihood multiplier, (3) R-space, and (4) a model constructed by the author. This is done by examining a forecasting problem encountered by an industrial firm. The forecasting problem was to study the market trend in order to decide whether to expand the production capacity of a ceramics plant. In spite of their different theoretical premises, the models yielded similar results. However, only the R-space model produced results that differed from the others. The paper also suggests a method that should avoid some internal contradictions of the cross-impact models.
