How light gets through periodically nanostructured metal films: a role of surface polaritonic crystals

2003

The physical origin of the enhanced optical transmission of periodically structured films related to surface plasmon polaritons is discussed from first principles. The enhancement of transmission through smooth, randomly rough and periodically nanostructured films is considered. Analysis shows that any metal (or dielectric) nanostructured film can exhibit enhanced transmission in certain spectral ranges corresponding to surface plasmon (or phonon) polariton Bloch mode states on a periodic structure. Resonant tunnelling via these states is responsible for the transmission enhancement. The properties of surface polaritonic crystals are analogous to those of photonic crystals and can find nume…

Light field propagation by metal micro- and nanostructures

2001

The ability to sustain plasmon oscillations gives rise to unique properties of metal nanostructures, which can be exploited for the controlled manipulation of light fields on the nanoscale. In this context we investigate electromagnetic coupling effects within lithographically produced ensembles of gold nanoparticles with a photon scanning tunnelling microscope. To provide an interface between these nano-optical devices and classical far-field optics, we investigate surface plasmon propagation on microstructured metal thin films.

Normal metal - insulator - superconductor thermometers and coolers with titanium-gold bilayer as the normal metal

2018

We have fabricated superconductor - insulator - normal metal - insulator - superconductor (SINIS) tunnel junctions in which Al acts as the superconductor, AlOx is the insulator, and the normal metal consists of a thin Ti layer (5 nm) covered with a thicker Au layer (40 nm). We have characterized the junctions by measuring their current-voltage curves between 60 mK and 750 mK. For comparison, the same measurements have been performed for a SINIS junction pair whose normal metal is Cu. The Ti-Au bilayer decreases the SINIS tunneling resistance by an order of magnitude compared to junctions where Cu is used as normal metal, made with the same oxidation parameters. The Ti-Au devices are much mo…

A laboratory and theoretical study on the uptake of sulfur dioxide gas by small water drops containing hydrogen peroxide under laminar and turbulent …

2000

Abstract Laboratory experiments are described where the uptake of SO2 gas by water drops containing H2O2 is investigated where the taken up S(IV) is quickly converted to S(VI). During the gas uptake the drops were freely suspended at their terminal velocity by means of the Mainz vertical wind tunnel. Two series of experiments were carried out, one with a laminar air flow in the wind tunnel, one with a turbulent air flow in the wind tunnel. Afterwards, the experimental results were compared against model computations using the so-called fully mixed convective diffusion model. The experimental results for laminar flow conditions showed that the fully mixed convective diffusion model for the u…

Oscillator strength reduction induced by external electric fields in self-assembled quantum dots and rings

2007

We have carried out continuous wave and time resolved photoluminescence experiments in self-assembled In(Ga)As quantum dots and quantum rings embedded in field effect structure devices. In both kinds of nanostructures, we find a noticeable increase of the exciton radiative lifetime with the external voltage bias that must be attributed to the field-induced polarizability of the confined electron hole pair. The interplay between the exciton radiative recombination and the electronic carrier tunneling in the presence of a stationary electric field is therefore investigated and compared with a numerical calculation based on the effective mass approximation.

Numerical simulations of photon scanning tunneling microscopy: role of a probe tip geometry in image formation

2005

Abstract Numerical simulations of two-dimensional probe–object system emulating a photon scanning tunnelling microscope are presented. R -matrix propagation algorithm incorporated into the differential method was used to achieve an extended capability to rigorously model a realistic system consisting of both a probe and a sample. Influence of the probe tip parameters on image formation in scanning near-field microscopy has been investigated. Coupling of the near-field to a single-mode probe and formation of a guided fundamental mode in a probe were investigated for various probe widths and lengths. The influence of the probe taper shape and apex size on near-field images was studied for sin…

Analysis of image formation with a photon scanning tunneling microscope

1996

International audience; The photon scanning tunneling microscope (PSTM) is based on the frustration of a total internal reflected beam by the end of an optical fiber. Until now it has been used to obtain topographic information, generally for smooth samples. We report theoretical as well as experimental results on the observation of a step on a quartz substrate with the PSTM. These results demonstrate the effects on image formation of the distance between the fiber tip and the sample surface, the orientation of the incident beam with respect to the step, the polarization, and the coherence of the light. Good agreement exists between numerical simulations and experiments. We show that a pert…

L-Tryptophan on Cu(111): engineering a molecular labyrinth driven by indole groups

2015

The present article investigates the adsorption and molecular orientation of L-Tryptophan, which is both an essential amino acid important for protein synthesis and of particular interest for the development of chiral molecular electronics and biocompatible processes and devices, on Cu(111) using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy at 55 K and at room temperature. The arrangement of chemisorbed L-Tryptophan on the copper surface varies with both temperature and surface coverage. At low coverage, small clusters form on the surface irrespective of temperature, while at high coverage an ordered chain structure emerges at room temperature, and a tightly packed structure forms a molec…

Exploring the Role of Intramolecular Interactions in the Suppression of Quantum Tunneling of the Magnetization in a 3d-4f Single-Molecule Magnet.

2021

Hydroxide-bridged FeIII4LnIII2 clusters having the general formula [Fe4Ln2(μ3-OH)2(mdea)6(SCN)2(NO3)2(H2O)2]·4H2O·2MeCN {Ln = Y (1), Dy (2), mdea = N-methyldiethanolamine} were synthesized and magnetically characterized. The thermal relaxation of the magnetization for 2 and the diluted FeIII4DyIIIYIII complex 3 (with and without applied field) has been analyzed. The diluted sample shows a dominant QTM at low temperatures that can be removed with a 0.15 T dc field. Both 2 and 3 show moderately high Ueff barriers and exhibit hysteresis loops until 5 K.

Role of Deprotonation and Cu Adatom Migration in Determining the Reaction Pathways of Oxalic Acid Adsorption on Cu(111)

2011

Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and first principles theoretical calculations have been used to gain insight into the fundamental processes involved in the adsorption and self-assembly of oxalic acid on Cu(111). The experimental data demonstrate that several reaction pathways are involved in the chemisorption of oxalic acid on Cu(111), one of which leads to deprotonation of the acid into oxalate molecules that form ordered structures on the surface. Theoretical calculations indicate that the adsorption of oxalate molecules is not stable on the surface unless copper adatoms are taken into consideration. Coordination with copper adatoms prevents ox…
