Luciana Natoli: Theory and Project
2017
The work of Luciana Natoli touched on several fields of architectural knowledge, showing again the numerous interests of the same. To understand the figure of this dynamic woman able to look at architecture through different scales of analysis, one must start with academic activity, correlated by many studies and interesting reflections to date on architecture and cities, then crossing the urban activity, with the collaboration in the drafting of numerous General Regulatory Plans, and finally get to the project activity. Natoli's commitment, filtered by a remarkable critical processing capacity, is common to research, didactic and professional works. This study investigates Luciana Natoli's…
MIXING TIME IN UNBAFFLED STIRRED TANKS
2012
Unbaffled stirred tanks, despite their poorer mixing performance with respect to baffled vessels, are gaining a growing industrial interest as they provide significant advantages in selected applications, including a number of biochemical, food and pharmaceutical processes. There still is however a general lack of information on their mixing performance, that needs to be addressed in order to fully exploit their application potential. The present work is aimed at providing experimental information on mixing rates in an unbaffled vessel operated without top-cover (Uncovered Unbaffled Stirred Tank, UUST). The planar laser induced fluorescence (PLIF) technique was adopted for measuring the dis…
POWER CONSUMPTION IN UNBAFFLED TANKS: SUB AND SUPER-CRITICAL REGIMES
2013
Unbaffled stirred tanks are increasingly recognized as a viable alternative to common baffled tanks for a range of processes (e.g. crystallization, food and pharmaceutical processes, etc) where the presence of baffles is undesirable for some reason. Also, in the case of bioreactors for animal cell cultivation, where cell damage is mainly related to bubbles bursts at the air –liquid interface, unbaffled tanks have been shown to be able to provide sufficient mass transfer through the free surface vortex. As a consequence bubble formation and subsequent bursting is conveniently avoided (Scargiali et al., 2012). The same feature clearly makes unbaffled vessels potentially advantageous for any f…
CFD simulation of radially stirred baffled and unbaffled tanks
2019
Stirred tanks typically employed in process industries are provided with baffles. Although the presence of baffles is known to guarantee good mixing rates, unbaffled vessels may be compulsory in some applications as crystallization, bioremediation, biotechnology and ore industry. A better understanding of unbaffled stirred vessels flow dynamics may allow (i) a proper design to be performed and (i) conditions/processes where baffle presence can be avoided to be recognized. In the present study, the k-ω SST was used to simulate an unbaffled tank from early to fully turbulent regime (Re≈600-33,000). The unbaffled tank simulated has a diameter T=0.19m and is stirred by a standard six-bladed Rus…
SIMULAZIONI CFD DEL CAMPO DI MOTO A BASSO NUMERO DI REYNOLDS IN BIOREATTORI AGITATI CON E SENZA SETTI FRANGIVORTICE
2016
ASSESSMENT OF THE MINIMUM POWER REQUIREMENTS FOR COMPLETE SUSPENSION IN TOP-COVERED UNBAFFLED STIRRED TANKS

CFD simulations of early- to fully-turbulent conditions in unbaffled and baffled vessels stirred by a Rushton turbine
2021
Abstract Laboratory scale unbaffled tanks provided with a top cover and a baffled tank both stirred by a Rushton turbine were simulated by carrying out RANS simulations. Three different turbulence models were adopted (k- ω SST, k- e and the SSG Reynolds stress model) to predict the flow field and the relevant performance parameters (power and pumping numbers) of the tank operated from early to fully turbulent conditions. CFD results were compared with literature experimental data and DNS simulation results to validate and properly compare the models. In the range of Reynolds numbers investigated, results showed that, for the unbaffled tank, the SSG model based on Reynolds stresses is a bett…
Dense Solid-Liquid Suspensions in Top-Covered Unbaffled Stirred Vessels
2011
In the present work solids suspension is investigated in an unbaffled tank stirred by a Rushton turbine and provided with a top-cover in order to avoid the formation of the well known central vortex. The data obtained are compared with those pertaining baffled stirred tanks via comparison with the well known Zwietering’s correlation. The dependence of Njs on particle concentration is found to be similar to that well established for baffled vessels, while, as a difference from the latter, Njs is found to decrease when liquid viscosity increases. Results also show that Njs is substantially independent of particle size, a feature that may advice the adoption of unbaffled tanks when large heavy…
Measurements of Njs and Power Requirements in Unbaffled Bioslurry Reactors
2012
The remediation of urban/industrial polluted lands is a topic of crucial importance nowadays. Bioremediation techniques are widely employed to remove organic pollutants from contaminated soils because of their simplicity and cheapness. The bioslurry reactors mechanically agitated by stirrers represent one of the most promising bioremediation techniques. In the present work an unbaffled stirred vessel filled with solids and water is experimentally investigated from a fluid dynamic point of view. Air presence within the tank is guaranteed by the central vortex formation (typical occurrence concerning stirred vessels unprovided with baffles) instead of an intrinsically more expensive insufflat…
Comparison of Agitators Performance for Particle Suspension in Top-Covered Unbaffled Vessels
2015
Power savings is a problem of crucial importance nowadays. In process industry, suspension of solid particles into liquids is usually obtained by employing stirred tanks, which often are very power demanding. Notwithstanding tanks provided with baffles are traditionally adopted for this task, recent studies have shown that power reductions can be obtained in top-covered unbaffled vessels. In the present work experiments were carried out in a top-covered unbaffled vessel with a diameter T=0.19m and filled with distilled water and silica particles. Two different turbines were tested: a standard six-bladed Rushton Turbine (RT) and a 45° four bladed Pitched Blade Turbine (PBT). For the case of …
