Il saggio analizza il romanzo di Johann Gottfried Schnabel 'Der Cavalier' del 1738, che racconta le avventure amorose di un giovane tedesco inviato in Italia dal padre per un 'viaggio di formazione'. Tema centrale del lavoro è l'immagine che dell'Italia si ha nei paesi di lingua tedesca a cavallo fra Seicento e Settecent, ma anche la concezione pedagogicao per la gioventù della media e piccola nobiltà, così come per i ceti borghesi più abbienti e intellettuali.

In questo volume sono presentati e tradotti per la prima volta in italiano due lavori di Tawfik al-Ḥakim, letterato e scrittore arabo-egiziano contemporaneo, noto soprattutto come drammaturgo. Il primo, Pigmalione,è un dramma di carattere simbolistico ispirato al mondo mitologico classico. Il secondo, Viaggio nel futuro,è invece un dramma la cui atmosfera richiama autori come Orwell e Wells.

Travel literature does not constitute an objective source: neither the images nor the texts escape the cliches of the time in which they were written. In the age of the Grand Tour, western culture appropriated the history of Sicily and the South, andit did so by selecting and distorting data and information.
