Invasive Colorado potato beetle (Leptinotarsa decemlineata) populations have experienced a rapid range expansion and intense selection by insecticides. Estimating oxygen consumption from heart rate and heart rate variability without individual calibration

Heart rate (HR) as an estimator of oxygen consumption (VO(2) ) usually requires HR to be individually calibrated in a separate test. This study examined the validity of a new HR - and HR variability-based method (Firstbeat PRO heartbeat analysis software) in the estimation of VO(2) in real-life tasks. The method takes into account the respiration rate determined from HR variability and the differences in the on/off dynamics of HR and VO(2) , and no calibration tests are needed. An Empirical Mode Decomposition Approach to Assess the Strength of Heart Period-Systolic Arterial Pressure Variability Interactions.

This work proposes an empirical mode decomposition (EMD) method to assess the strength of the interactions between heart period (HP) and systolic arterial pressure (SAP) variability. EMD was exploited to decompose the original series (OR) into its first, and fastest, intrinsic mode function (IMF1) and the residual (RES) computed by subtracting the IMF1 from OR. We exploit a recently proposed framework for assessing causal influences in the frequency domain to construct the partial information decomposition (PID) for informational circuits of three variables, thus obtaining the spectral decomposition of redundancy, synergy and unique information. Abstract. Actual evapotranspiration from typical Mediterranean crops has been assessed in a Sicilian study area by using surface energy balance (SEB) and soil-water balance models. Both modelling approaches use remotely sensed data to estimate evapotranspiration fluxes in a spatially distributed way. Inter-individual variations of in vivo aroma release kinetics have been observed widely in the literature. However, the corresponding causes are yet to be clearly identified. For this purpose, 68 subjects in whom salivary flow rates (at rest and Parafilm™-stimulated) had been determined were recruited for the study. Inter-individual retronasal aroma release variability during cheese consumption: Role of food oral processing

The aim of our study was to explain inter-individual differences on in vivo aroma release during cheese consumption by oral physiological parameters. To reach this objective, 34 subjects were recruited. Their salivary flow, oral volume and velum opening were determined.
