A compliant visco-plastic particle contact model based on differential variational inequalities

2013

This work describes an approach to simulate contacts between threedimensional shapes with compliance and damping using the framework of the differential variational inequality theory. Within the context of nonsmooth dynamics, we introduce an extension to the classical set-valued model for frictional contacts between rigid bodies, allowing contacts to experience local compliance, viscosity, and plasticization. Different types of yield surfaces can be defined for various types of contact, a versatile approach that contains the classic dry Coulomb friction as a special case. The resulting problem is a differential variational inequality that can be solved, at each integration time step, as a v…

The need for recovery scale

2013

Abstract Introduction Need for Recovery scale is one of the main scales used to assess work-induced fatigue and quality of workers’ recovery time. In fact, need for recovery is considered relevant as a precursor of prolonged fatigue or psychological distress, an indicator of work stress, and a mediating or moderating characteristic in the etiology of work-related health problems, sick leave and work disability. Objective The purpose of the present study is to translate the Need for Recovery scale into Italian, and to adapt it to Italian culture; until now there has been no comparable valid instrument made for the Italian language that measures the need for recovery of employees. The stabili…

Characterizations of convex approximate subdifferential calculus in Banach spaces

2016

International audience; We establish subdifferential calculus rules for the sum of convex functions defined on normed spaces. This is achieved by means of a condition relying on the continuity behaviour of the inf-convolution of their corresponding conjugates, with respect to any given topology intermediate between the norm and the weak* topologies on the dual space. Such a condition turns out to also be necessary in Banach spaces. These results extend both the classical formulas by Hiriart-Urruty and Phelps and by Thibault.

Regularization of chattering phenomena via bounded variation controls

2018

In control theory, the term chattering is used to refer to strong oscillations of controls, such as an infinite number of switchings over a compact interval of times. In this paper we focus on three typical occurences of chattering: the Fuller phenomenon, referring to situations where an optimal control switches an infinite number of times over a compact set; the Robbins phenomenon, concerning optimal control problems with state constraints, meaning that the optimal trajectory touches the boundary of the constraint set an infinite number of times over a compact time interval; the Zeno phenomenon, referring as well to an infinite number of switchings over a compact set, for hybrid optimal co…

North-Atlantic Oscillation and regional-scale sea-surge variability in Gulf of Lions during the 20th century

2010

Article soumis; International audience; Sea-surge variations recorded at three tide-gauge stations (Grau-de-la-Dent, Sète, and Port-Vendres) around the Gulf of Lions (Northwest Mediterranean Sea) are mostly locally forced by onshore winds blowing from 90° to 180° related to an atmospheric depression usually centered between the Bay of Biscay and the British Island, which is more prevalent during the negative phase of the North-Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). During the second half of the 20th century, the long-term increase of sea-surge height at Grau-de-la-Dent finds no counterpart in the positive deviation of the NAO. The relationship between the monthly frequency of sea surges > 20 cm at Gra…

Functional ecology for evaluating and predicting the aptitude of permanent grassland to provide services

2013

National audience; Applying the principles of functional ecology helps better predict the services which can be provided by permanent grassland. Farming practices and environmental characteristics influence the functional composition of grassland. Functional plant types have a generic effect on forage services which can be assessed. 13 types of grassland composed of distinct functional types were defined based on 1,283 sample grassland fields located on 8 sites. This approach was validated by checking 8 Ellenberg indicator values (used to evaluate environmental characteristics and farming practices) against climatic data and descriptive data for farming practices. The interest of a function…

Tracking in Presence of Total Occlusion and Size Variation using Mean Shift and Kalman Filter

2011

International audience; The classical mean shift algorithm for tracking in perfectly arranged conditions constitutes a good object tracking method. However, in the real environment it presents some limitations, especially under the presence of noise, objects with varying size, or occlusions. In order to deal with these problems, this paper proposes a reliable object tracking algorithm using mean shift and the Kalman filter, which was added to the traditional algorithm as a predictor when no reliable model of the object being tracked is found. Experimental work demonstrates that the proposed mean shift Kalman filter algorithm improves the tracking performance of the classical algorithms in c…

Quelques thèmes en l'analyse variationnelle et optimisation

2014

In this thesis, we first study the theory of [gamma]-limits. Besides some basic properties of [gamma]-limits,expressions of sequential [gamma]-limits generalizing classical results of Greco are presented. These limits also give us a clue to a unified classification of derivatives and tangent cones. Next, we develop an approach to generalized differentiation theory. This allows us to deal with several generalized derivatives of set-valued maps defined directly in primal spaces, such as variational sets, radial sets, radial derivatives, Studniarski derivatives. Finally, we study calculus rules of these derivatives and applications related to optimality conditions and sensitivity analysis.

Temporal dynamics of arable weeds communities assembly : interactions between farming practices and ecological processes across crop sequences

2018

Understanding how farming practices affect weed community assembly in arable fields is a core challenge of agro-ecology. Weeds are supposed to share particular ecological characteristics that allow them to colonize arable fields despite environmental constrains exert by farming practices. In addition, interactions between ecological processes operating during a cropping season (eg: abiotic filtering) and at the scale of crop succession (eg: temporal dispersal) are supposed to drive weed community assembly in arable fields. These two hypotheses have been tested in my phD work.First, we compared a pool of weed species to a pool of non-weed herbaceous plants based on several functional traits …

Dissolved silica in the Garonne River waters : changes in the weathering dynamics

2000

The major ion chemistry of the Garonne River is indicative of seasonal variations in the weathering dynamics of the drainage basin. Using the geochemical model MEGA for calculation of the contribution of atmospheric CO2 to the total bicarbonate fluxes exported by the Garonne River allows estimations of the concentrations of the major dissolved elements that originate from silicate- and carbonate-rock weathering. The molecular ratio SiO2/Al2O3 was calculated for the 1989–1992 period to identify the main type of weathering in the Garonne River, and montmorillonite was shown to be the major mineral occurring in the weathering products. The seasonal variations of the SiO2/Al2O3 ratio also showe…
