A Neural Architecture for 3D Segmentation

2003

An original neural scheme for segmentation of range data is presented, which is part of a more general 3D vision system for robotic applications. The entire process relies on a neural architecture aimed to perform first order image irradiance analysis, that is local estimation of magnitude and orientation of the image irradiance gradient.

Management options for reducing vision-related asthenopic complaints

2022

Diplomdarbs uzrakstīts angļu valodā uz 23 lappusēm. Tajā ir 8 attēli, 4 tabulas un 17 atsauces. Īpaši ar Covid-19 tiek uzlabota elektronisko ierīču lietošana īpaši skolas vecuma bērniem, kuri ar e-mācībām daudzas stundas dienā pavadīja, izmantojot datorus, lai pētītu, palielinot jau tuvredzības laikā esošo astenopisko simptomu nopietnību. Izmantojot +0,50D atkarību skolas vecuma bērniem (8-16 g.v.) ar ezoforiju tuvredzības stāvoklī 45 dienas, mēs varam ievērojami samazināt šo simptomu skaitu, kā arī varam pamanīt foorijas samazināšanos. Izmantojot šo metodi, pacientam var būt ērta redze tuvumā un uzlabota veiktspēja datora lietošanas un studiju laikā.

Evidence that Ultra-High-Energy Gamma Rays are a Universal Feature Near Powerful Pulsars

2021

The highest-energy known gamma-ray sources are all located within 0.5 degrees of extremely powerful pulsars. This raises the question of whether ultra-high-energy (UHE; $>$ 56 TeV) gamma-ray emission is a universal feature expected near pulsars with a high spin-down power. Using four years of data from the High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) Gamma-Ray Observatory, we present a joint-likelihood analysis of ten extremely powerful pulsars to search for UHE gamma-ray emission correlated with these locations. We report a significant detection ($>$ 3$$), indicating that UHE gamma-ray emission is a generic feature of powerful pulsars. We discuss the emission mechanisms of the gamma rays a…

Asynchronous L1 control of delayed switched positive systems with mode-dependent average dwell time

2014

Abstract This paper investigates the stability and asynchronous L 1 control problems for a class of switched positive linear systems (SPLSs) with time-varying delays by using the mode-dependent average dwell time (MDADT) approach. By allowing the co-positive type Lyapunov–Krasovskii functional to increase during the running time of active subsystems, a new stability criterion for the underlying system with MDADT is first derived. Then, the obtained results are extended to study the issue of asynchronous L 1 control, where “asynchronous” means that the switching of the controllers has a lag with respect to that of system modes. Sufficient conditions are provided to guarantee that the resulti…

Stabilization of positive switched systems with time-varying delays under asynchronous switching

2014

Published version of an article in the journal: International Journal of Control, Automation and Systems. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s12555-013-0486-x This paper investigates the state feedback stabilization problem for a class of positive switched systems with time-varying delays under asynchronous switching in the frameworks of continuous-time and discrete-time dynamics. The so-called asynchronous switching means that the switches between the candidate controllers and system modes are asynchronous. By constructing an appropriate co-positive type Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional and further allowing the functional to increase during the running time of ac…

Global Climatologies of Eulerian and Lagrangian Flow Features based on ERA-Interim

2017

Abstract This paper introduces a newly compiled set of feature-based climatologies identified from ERA-Interim (1979–2014). Two categories of flow features are considered: (i) Eulerian climatologies of jet streams, tropopause folds, surface fronts, cyclones and anticyclones, blocks, and potential vorticity streamers and cutoffs and (ii) Lagrangian climatologies, based on a large ensemble of air parcel trajectories, of stratosphere–troposphere exchange, warm conveyor belts, and tropical moisture exports. Monthly means of these feature climatologies are openly available at the ETH Zürich web page (http://eraiclim.ethz.ch) and are annually updated. Datasets at higher resolution can be obtained…

Spatial Forecast Verification Methods Intercomparison Project: Application of the SAL Technique

2009

Abstract In this study, a recently introduced feature-based quality measure called SAL, which provides information about the structure, amplitude, and location of a quantitative precipitation forecast (QPF) in a prespecified domain, is applied to different sets of synthetic and realistic QPFs in the United States. The focus is on a detailed discussion of selected cases and on the comparison of the verification results obtained with SAL and some classical gridpoint-based error measures. For simple geometric precipitation objects it is shown that SAL adequately captures errors in the size and location of the objects, however, not in their orientation. The artificially modified (so-called fake…

IWAL–An Interactive Weather Analysis Laboratory

2015

Abstract Complementary key elements of meteorological education are the provision of a thorough theoretical understanding of the physical laws governing atmospheric motions, and the hands-on investigation and visualization of specific weather systems. However, the latter task is technically challenging, because specific skills must be acquired for flexibly handling meteorological data. Some examples are superimposing satellite pictures and reanalysis fields, producing an isentropic potential vorticity (PV) map, and visualizing a vertical section across a flow feature of interest. Although learning these technical issues has its own merits, it can distract students from investigating the com…

Surface temperature retrieval from Along Track Scanning Radiometer 2 data: Algorithms and validation

2004

[1] A study has been carried out using MODTRAN 3.5 simulations of the Along Track Scanning Radiometer 2 (ATSR-2) data at 3.7, 11, and 12 μm wavelengths to give a range of algorithms for estimating surface. Making use of the dual-angle feature of the ATSR-2, algorithms based on dual-angle, split-window, and mixed structure have been considered. The coefficients of the algorithms are derived by regression analysis using the MATLAB code. The evaluation of the sensitivity of each algorithm shows that in general, dual-angle algorithms provide smaller errors in the estimation of surface temperature than the split-window algorithms and that the algorithms with water vapor dependence give an improv…

Integration of fuzzy logic and image analysis for the detection of gullies in the Calhoun Critical Zone Observatory using airborne LiDAR data

2017

Abstract The entire Piedmont of the Southeastern United States, where the Calhoun Critical Zone Observatory (CCZO) is located, experienced one of the most severe erosive events of the last two centuries. Forested areas were cleared to cultivate cotton, tobacco, and other crops during the nineteenth and early twentieth century and these land use changes, together with intense rainfalls, initiated deep gullying. An accurate mapping of these landforms is important since, despite some gully stabilization and reforestation efforts, gullies are still major contributors of sediment to streams. Mapping gullies in the CCZO area is hindered by the presence of dense canopy, which precludes the identif…
