A distributed architecture for autonomous navigation of robots

The paper shows a distributed architecture for autonomous robot navigation. The architecture is based on three modules that are implemented on separate and interacting agents: the target recognizer, the obsta90cle evaluator and the planner. An adaptive genetic algorithm has been studied to identify mechanisms for reaching the target and for manipulating the 2-directions of the robot; the distributed architecture has been embedded in the DAISY (Distributed Architecture for Intelligent System). Experiments have been carried out using a LEGO intelligent brick.

Design of a configurable multispectral imaging system based on an AOTF.

In this paper, we present a configurable multispectral imaging system based on an acousto-optic tunable filter (AOTF). Typically, AOTFs are used to filter a single wavelength at a time, but thanks to the use of a versatile sweeping frequency generator implemented with a direct digital synthesizer, the imager may capture a configurable spectral range. Experimental results show a good spectral and imaging response of the system for spectral bandwidth up to a 50 nm.

Enabling independent navigation for visually impaired people through a wearable vision-based feedback system

This work introduces a wearable system to provide situational awareness for blind and visually impaired people. The system includes a camera, an embedded computer and a haptic device to provide feedback when an obstacle is detected. The system uses techniques from computer vision and motion planning to (1) identify walkable space; (2) plan step-by-step a safe motion trajectory in the space, and (3) recognize and locate certain types of objects, for example the location of an empty chair. Pavement cracks are considered a major indicator of pavement performance. Because traditional manual crack surveys are dangerous, time consuming, and expensive, technologies have been developed to collect high-speed pavement images, and numerous algorithms have been proposed to detect cracks on pavement surface. Speed perception is an important task depending mainly on optic flow that the driver must perform continuously to control his/her vehicle. Unfortunately, it appears that in some driving simulators speed perception is under estimated, leading into speed production higher than in real conditions. Perceptual validity is then not good enough to study driver’s behavior. LED light sources are used to design experimental setup for university courses teaching human color vision. The setup allows to demonstrate various vision characteristics and to apply for student practical exercises to study eye spectral sensitivity in different spectral range using heterochromatic flicker photometry. Stereo to Wave-Field Synthesis music up-mixing: An objective and subjective evaluation

Sound source separation techniques are known to be very useful in many applications. High fidelity and audio oriented applications are a challenging issue in this topic, however, existing algorithms are far from performing with such a high quality. In this paper, a subjective and objective evaluation are carried out for several algorithms designed for dealing with stereo music mixtures. The performance of these algorithms applied to acoustic scene resynthesis in a Wave Field Synthesis system is discussed.

Data-driven design of robust fault detection system for wind turbines

Abstract In this paper, a robust data-driven fault detection approach is proposed with application to a wind turbine benchmark. The main challenges of the wind turbine fault detection lie in its nonlinearity, unknown disturbances as well as significant measurement noise. To overcome these difficulties, a data-driven fault detection scheme is proposed with robust residual generators directly constructed from available process data. A performance index and an optimization criterion are proposed to achieve the robustness of the residual signals related to the disturbances.
