We investigated conversion rates of androgens to estrogens in cultured, hormone-responsive prostate (LNCaP) and breast (MCF-7) human cancer cells. For this purpose, we adopted an intact cell analysis, whereby cells were incubated for different incubation times in the presence of close-to-physiological (1 nM) or supraphysiological (1 μM) concentrations of labelled androgen precursors, i.e. testosterone (T) and androstenedione (Δ4Ad). The aromatase activity, as measured by estrogen formation, was detected in LNCaP cells (0.5 pmol/ml), even though to a significantly lower extent than in MCF-7 cells (5.4 pmol/ml), using 1 μM T after 72 h incubation. Objective: In vitro comparison of the efficacy of two bleaching procedures, one based on carbamide peroxide (CP) and the other on hydrogen peroxide (HP), simulating clinical conditions. Study Design: Two groups of 20 teeth in each group were selected. Group A: 22% CP, one hour a day for 21 consecutive days. Background The aim of this investigation was to determine the in vitro effects of linseed, olive and Nigel oils on T cell proliferation and function in gestational diabetes. Right ventricular volume determination in isolated human hearts

For right ventricular volume determination a new method was developed that took into account right ventricular imaging by apical two-dimensional echocardiography in the four- and two-chamber views. Right ventricular volume was calculated by subtraction of the partial volume of the left ventricle and interventricular septum from the total heart volume of the right and left ventricles including the interventricular septum. Accuracy of the subtraction method was evaluated in isolated human hearts by two-dimensional echocardiography and radiography. In order to facilitate the interpretation and evaluation of the ultrasonic cardiac cross-section displayed by this two-dimensional technique, we performed anatomic cross-sections corresponding to ultrasonic cross-sections. One purpose of this study was the development of methods for radioactive labeling and handling of the yolk protein of Nereis virens, another, the utilization of this tracer in nereid oocyte cultures to describe the kinetics and specificity of yolk protein uptake. Accumulation of labeled yolk protein by growing oocytes is linear over time, specific for yolk protein, and dependent on tracer concentration in the medium. Incorporation of yolk protein follows saturation kinetics which allows us to reproducibly determine the characteristics of this process. We investigated the spontaneous uterine activity of isolated corpus uteri myometrial strips from 30 patients with nonpathologic myometrium, 26 patients with uterine myoma, 23 patients with uterine adenomyosis, and three patients with uterine malignancy. We also investigated the influence of these conditions on the response of the uterus to histamine. The results show the same qualitative cyclic changes of the spontaneous motility of isolated myometrial strips throughout the menstrual cycle in all the abnormalities studied. Endothelin action on goat cerebral arteries.

Abstract Cumulative application of endothelin-1 (human) markedly constricted goat isolated cerebral arteries in a concentration-dependent manner. Contractile responses were not affected by removal of endothelial cells. Removal of extracellular calcium or addition of the calcium channel blocker nicardipine (10−7 M) failed to abolish responses to endothelin. The results suggest that the endothelium-independent constriction of cerebral arteries produced by endothelin cannot be explained solely by voltage-dependent calcium channels. The contractile responses are likely to be mediated by stimulation of specific receptors for this peptide.
