The adsorption behaviour of a homologous series of amphiphilic hemicyanines is studied at the air-water interface. The dyes exhibit an unusual, marked odd-even effect with respect to the standard free energy of adsorption and the minimum surface area demand. The reasons for such strong, hitherto unknown odd-even effect is not yet clear.
A new liquid surface neutron reflectometer and its application to the study of DPPC in a monolayer at the air/water interface

A constant wavelength neutron reflectometer is described. Using this reflectometer, the neutron reflectivities from phosphatidylcholine monolayers in the highly condensed LC phase on ultra pure H2O and D2O have been measured on a Wilhelmy film balance. The neutron reflectivities have been carefully compared with those obtained by the X-ray method applied to the same monolayer under similar conditions. A new approach to analyzing a combined set of data composed of X-ray and neutron reflectivities has been used. The foaming properties of camel and bovine whey: The impact of pH and heat treatment

International audience; he effect of heat treatment (70 degrees C or 90 degrees C for 30 min) on the foaming and interfacial properties of acid and sweet whey obtained from bovine and camel fresh milk was examined. The maximum foamability and foam stability were observed for acid whey when compared to sweet whey for both milks, with higher values for the camel whey. This behavior for acid whey was explained by the proximity of the pI of whey protein (4.9-5.2), where proteins were found to carry the lowest negative charge as confirmed by the zeta potential measurements. Modelling biogeochemical processes in sediments from the north-western Adriatic Sea: response to enhanced particulate organic carbon fluxes

This work presents the result of a study carried out in the north-western Adriatic Sea, by combining two different types of biogeochemical models with field sampling efforts. A longline mussel farm was taken as a local source of perturbation to the natural particulate organic carbon (POC) downward flux. This flux was first quantified by means of a pelagic model of POC deposition coupled to sediment trap data, and its effects on sediment bioirrigation capacity and organic matter (OM) degradation pathways were investigated constraining an early diagenesis model by using original data collected in sediment porewater. The monolayer properties of two types of discotic liquid crystals, hexasubstituted triphenylenes 1 and azo derivatives of phloroglucinol 5, were examined. First investigations show that these discotic liquid crystals form stable monolayers. It could be shown that electron acceptors insert into the monolayer of 1.
