Arterial stiffness indexes in acute ischemic stroke: Relationship with stroke subtype

2010

INTRODUCTION: No study has evaluated both arterial stiffness indexes (PWV and Aix) in patients with an acute cerebrovascular event. The aim of our study was to evaluate arterial stiffness indexes in subjects with acute ischemic stroke and to evaluate the relationship between these indexes and other clinical and laboratory variables. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We enrolled all consecutive patients with a diagnosis of acute ischemic stroke admitted to the Internal Medicine Department at the University of Palermo between November 2006 and January 2009, and hospitalized control patients without a diagnosis of acute ischemic stroke. The type of acute ischemic stroke was classified according to the TO…

Do Stretch Durations Affect Muscle Mechanical and Neurophysiological Properties?

2016

International audience; The aim of the study was to determine whether stretching durations influence acute changes of mechanical and neurophysiological properties of plantar flexor muscles. Plantar flexors of 10 active males were stretched in passive conditions on an isokinetic dynamometer. Different durations of static stretching were tested in 5 randomly ordered experimental trials (1, 2, 3, 4 and 10×30-s). Fascicle stiffness index, evoked contractile properties and spinal excitability (Hmax/Mmax) were examined before (PRE), immediately after (POST0) and 5 min after (POST5) stretching. No stretch duration effect was recorded for any variable. Moreover, whatever the stretching duration, st…

Modeling the impact of soft tissue on axial transmission measurements of ultrasonic guided waves in human radius

2008

Recent in vitro and simulation studies have shown that guided waves measured at low ultrasound frequencies (f=200 kHz) can characterize both material properties and geometry of the cortical bone wall. In particular, a method for an accurate cortical thickness estimation from ultrasound velocity data has been presented. The clinical application remains, however, a challenge as the impact of a layer of soft tissue on top of the bone is not yet well established, and this layer is expected to affect the dispersion and relative intensities of guided modes. The present study is focused on the theoretical modeling of the impact of an overlying soft tissue. A semianalytical method and finite-differ…

Long-term comparison of corneal aberration changes after laser in situ keratomileusis: mechanical microkeratome versus femtosecond laser flap creatio…

2010

Purpose To compute and compare visual acuity, refractive outcomes, and anterior corneal aberration changes after myopic laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) with flap creation by a mechanical microkeratome and by a femtosecond laser. Setting Private practice refractive surgery center, Valencia, Spain. Design Comparative case series. Methods Patients were assigned to have LASIK flap creation with a mechanical microkeratome (Carriazo-Barraquer) or a femtosecond laser (IntraLase). The Visx S2 excimer laser was used for myopic ablation in all cases. Main outcome measures included uncorrected and corrected distance visual acuities and the defocus equivalent. Higher-order aberrations (HOAs) were …

Revisiting mu suppression in autism spectrum disorder

2014

Two aspects of the EEG literature lead us to revisit mu suppression in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). First and despite the fact that the mu rhythm can be functionally segregated in two discrete sub-bands, 8-10 Hz and 10-12/13 Hz, mu-suppression in ASD has been analyzed as a homogeneous phenomenon covering the 8-13 Hz frequency. Second and although alpha-like activity is usually found across the entire scalp, ASD studies of action observation have focused on the central electrodes (C3/C4). The present study was aimed at testing on the whole brain the hypothesis of a functional dissociation of mu and alpha responses to the observation of human actions in ASD according to bandwidths. Electro…

Relationship between albumin excretion rate and aortic stiffness in untreated essential hypertensive patients

2004

. Objectives.  To evaluate, in a group of nondiabetic essential hypertensive patients with normal renal function, the relationship between albumin excretion rate (AER) and carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (PWV), as an index of aortic stiffness. Design.  Cross-sectional study. Setting.  Outpatient hypertension clinic. Subjects.  Seventy patients with mild-to-moderate essential hypertension, aged 42 ± 8 years, never pharmacologically treated. All subjects underwent routine laboratory tests, 24-h ambulatory blood pressure (BP) monitoring, measurement of carotid-femoral PWV, by means of a computerized method, and AER. Results.  Microalbuminuric patients (AER ≥ 20 μg min−1; n = 19), when comp…

Don't stop me now: Hampered retrieval of action plans following interruptions

2020

How can we retrieve action plans in working memory (WM) after being distracted or interrupted? The present EEG study investigated this question using a WM task in which a random sequence of single numbers (1-4 and 6-9) was presented. In a given trial, participants had to decide whether the number presented in the preceding trial was odd or even. Additionally, interfering stimuli were randomly presented in 25% of all trials, requiring the participants to either ignore a colored number (distraction) or respond to it (interruption) while maintaining the previously formed action plan in WM. Our results revealed a detrimental impact of interruptions on WM performance in trials after interrupting…

Electromagnetically Generated Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy and Adjuvant Combined Oral Litholysis for Therapy of Symptomatic Gallbladder Ston…

1991

A prospective study was conducted to evaluate effectivity, problems and adverse effects of extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) using a newly developed electromagnetic biliary lithotriptor (Lithostar Plus, Siemens, Erlangen, FRG) for the treatment of selected patients presenting with symptomatic cholecystolithiasis. In addition to generally accepted criteria for the selection of patients, gallbladder contractility was established and pigment stones were excluded by computed tomography (CT). 80 out of 486 patients (63 females, 17 males, mean age 36, range 17-76 years) were selected for ESWL using a standardized diagnostic program. 62 out of 80 patients participating in the study had …

High-energy extracorporeal shock wave treatment of nonunions.

2001

Forty-three consecutive patients who did not have healing of tibial or femoral diaphyseal and metaphyseal fractures and osteotomies for at least 9 months after injury or surgery were examined prospectively for use of high-energy extracorporeal shock waves. Former treatment modalities (cast, external fixator, plate osteosynthesis, limitation of weightbearing) remained unchanged. In all cases a 99m Technetium dicarboxyphosphonate regional two-phase bone scintigraphy was performed before one treatment with 3000 impulses of an energy flux density of 0.6 mJ/mm 2 . Radiologic and clinical followups were done at 4-week intervals starting 8 weeks after shock wave treatment. The success criterion wa…

Measurement of the local aortic stiffness by a non-invasive bioelectrical impedance technique.

2011

International audience; Aortic stiffness measurement is well recognized as an independent predictor of cardiovascular mortality and morbidity. Recently, a simple method has been proposed for the evaluation of the local aortic stiffness (AoStiff) using a non-invasive bioelectrical impedance (BI) technique. This approach relies on a novel interpretation of the arterial stiffness where AoStiff is computed from the measurement of two new BI variables: (1) the local aortic flow resistance (AoRes) exerted by the drag forces onto the flow; (2) the local aortic wall distensibility (AoDist). Herein, we propose to detail and compare these three indices with the reference pulse wave velocity (PWV) mea…
