The numerical challenges in multiphysical modeling of laser welding with arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian method

2018

International audience; The interaction of high power laser beam with metallic materials produces a number of interconnected phenomena that represent a serious challenge for numerical modeling, especially for creation of auto-consistent models. Additional difficulty consists in lack of data on materials properties at the temperatures superior to their melting point. The present work summarizes the numerical challenges in creation and validation of free-surface models using ALE moving mesh coupled with heat transfer equation and Navier-Stokes fluid flow.

Residual Stress Effects on Fatigue Crack Growth in Ti-6Al-4V Friction Stir Welds

2008

Recent studies have illustrated a predominant role of the residual stress on the fatigue crack growth in friction stir welded joints. In this study, the role of the residual stress on the propagation of fatigue cracks orthogonal to the weld direction in a friction stir welded Ti-6Al-4V joint was investigated. A numerical prediction of the fatigue crack growth rate in the presence of the residual stresses was carried out using AFGROW software; reasonable correspondence between the predictions and the experimental results were observed when the effects of residual stress were included in the simulation.

Comparison of Post-Weld Treatment of High-Strength Steel Welded Joints in Medium Cycle Fatigue

2010

This paper presents a comparison of three post-weld treatments for fatigue life improvement of welded joints. The objective is to determine the most suitable post-weld treatment for implementation in mass production of certain crane components manufactured from very high-strength steel. The processes investigated are: burr grinding, TIG dressing and ultrasonic impact treatment. The focus of this investigation is on the so-called medium cycle area, i.e. 10 000-500 000 cycles and very high stress ranges. In this area of fatigue design, the use of very high strength steel becomes necessary, since the stress range can exceed the yield-strength of ordinary structural steel, especially when consi…

Progetto di Strutture in acciaio per le nuove costruzioni e per gli interventi di consolidamento. IV Edizione

2005

The book is a state of the art summary of recent development in the behavior, analysis and design of steel and composite structures. The book provides advanced students, researchers al professionals in civil and structural engineering with the basic principles upon which the modern codes are based. In the first part, the materials, the actions and the sectional behavior are analyzed on the base of the limit state theory. Then the connections (bolted and welded)and the stability effects are examined. In this way is possible speak about seismic performance, retrofitting an refurbishment of existing buildings, referring to the italian rules, to the european codes EC3, EC4 and to the AISC rules.
