Projects for Transformation. The second part of this study presents a selection of projects developed by the five research units for the analyzed case studies. Since the objectives of the transformation processes are at least partly clear from the very beginning of the analytical work, the orientation of the designs actually also determines the type of preliminary study which is conducted on the residential neighborhoods. By adopting different design methodologies and strategies, the projects explore several main topics, which can be summed up as: revision of the public spaces at the ground floor of the buildings; functional transformation and variation of quantities (number of inhabitants,…
2010
The ZEN district in Palermo, Sicily, is a proving ground for the experimentation of sustainability of architecture in outskirts. In the historical city centre, the consistency of the used materials ensures a long duration of the buildings, as well as an efficient protection of the internal spaces. A for centuries consolidated urban structure configures an environment, which the inhabitants recognize as appropriate to their living. That is generally different to the outskirt this project is about. The project of residencies between ZEN 2 and Cortile Gnazziddi hypothesizes a consolidation of an existing city by adding a new building. Therewith shall be filled a crack due to interventions of d…

Jahrhunderts
2019
In the second half of the sixteenth century, the transfer of knowledge is a con- flict situation: on the one hand, there is a generalised thirst for knowledge but, on the other, a fear of the circulation of new ideas on the part of both the secular and religious authorities. This was especially the case with regard to informa- tion related to the areas of medicine, astronomy, and alchemy-magic which was banned or censored. This paper argues that many authors relied on a Poetics of Contradiction in order to be able to transmit this information. Despite appa- rently opposing statements or thanks to their apparent opposition, they trans- mitted a meaningful message and allowed attentive, eliti…

2022
The history of Italian publishing industry in the last years of Fascism reveals different strategies, that outline a non-heterogeneous panorama of the positions taken by publishers towards the regime's cultural policy. Alongside the publishers, like Corticelli, Salani and Guanda, who were somehow ready to collaborate with the regime, there were others who found constant compromises to keep afloat even not unconditionally submit to the new rules. The article illustrates the main trends of this phenomenon, by focusing on the Mondadori case and illustrating some contradictions that characterized its editorial policy.
