Violet Diode Laser in Time-Resolved Stored-Ion Spectroscopy

2004

Lifetime measurements of the metastable 3d D-2(3/2) level in singly charged calcium were performed using the newly developed violet diode laser operated in an external cavity arrangement. The laser was employed on stored ions at the CRYRING facility to optically pump the resonance line at 397 nm. In combination with laser probing at 866 nm this detection scheme gave the possibility to record the lifetime of this level. which has a radiative lifetime of about 1 s.

Analytical methodologies for atomic spectrometric determination of metallic oxides in UV sunscreen creams.

2000

In this study, methodologies for determining titanium oxide, zinc oxide and iron oxide are proposed and assayed in commercial sunscreen products. The proposed methodology for TiO2, determination in sunscreens is based on a microwave-assisted treatment for digesting the organic components in a closed teflon reactor in presence of HNO3 and HCl. Titanium is determined by inductive coupled plasma emission spectrometry (ICP-AES). The proposed methodologies for measuring ZnO and Fe2O3 are based on a sample emulsification in water with a non ionic tensioactive and IBMK, followed by Zn and Fe determination by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS). The methodologies allow a precise and accurat…

E-beam crosslinked, biocompatible functional hydrogels incorporating polyaniline nanoparticles

2012

Abstract PANI aqueous nanocolloids in their acid-doped, inherently conductive form were synthesised by means of suitable water soluble polymers used as stabilisers. In particular, poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) or chitosan (CT) was used to stabilise PANI nanoparticles, thus preventing PANI precipitation during synthesis and upon storage. Subsequently, e-beam irradiation of the PANI dispersions has been performed with a 12 MeV Linac accelerator. PVA-PANI nanocolloid has been transformed into a PVA-PANI hydrogel nanocomposite by radiation induced crosslinking of PVA. CT-PANI nanoparticles dispersion, in turn, was added to PVA to obtain wall-to-wall gels, as chitosan mainly undergoes chain scission…

Continuous SO2 flux measurements for Vulcano Island, Italy

2012

<p>The La Fossa cone of Vulcano Island (Aeolian Archipelago, Italy) is a closed conduit volcano. Today, Vulcano Island is characterized by sulfataric activity, with a large fumarolic field that is mainly located in the summit area. A scanning differential optical absorption spectroscopy instrument designed by the Optical Sensing Group of Chalmers University of Technology in Göteborg, Sweden, was installed in the framework of the European project "Network for Observation of Volcanic and Atmospheric Change", in March 2008. This study presents the first dataset of SO2 plume fluxes recorded for a closed volcanic system. Between 2008 and 2010, the SO2</…

An on-line system for preconcentration and determination of lead in wine samples by FAAS

2002

A flow injection method has been developed for the direct determination of free available Pb(II) and total Pb content in wine samples. The method is based on the chemical sorption of Pb(II), from pH 7 buffered solutions, on a packed polyurethane foam column, modified by addition of 2-(2-benzothiazolylazo)-p-cresol (BTAC). After this step, lead was directly eluted with a stream of 0.1 mol l(-1) HCl into an air C(2)H(2) flame in which lead was determined by atomic absorption spectrometry. Total lead was analyzed after sample digestion with nitric acid and hydrogen peroxide, being free available lead determined by direct sample on-line preconcentration and elution. The method provides a limit …

Detection of bias errors in ETAASDetermination of copper in beer and wine samples

2005

A method that evidences changes in the shape of the absorbance profiles obtained by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (ETAAS) is proposed. The method is based upon the apparent content curves model previously described for molecular spectroscopy and it permits the detection of possible sources of bias errors. Moreover, a procedure that allows to detect the existence of constant and/or proportional errors is also described. Both models has been applied to the determination of copper in wine and beer samples with and without pre-treatment of the samples. Results obtained evidence the usefulness of the proposed models.

X-ray absorption study of the electronic structure of tungsten and molybdenum oxides on the O K-edge

2001

Magnetron sputtered amorphous thin films a-WO3, a-MoO3 and doped a-WO3:Ir have been studied by X-ray absorption spectroscopy on the oxygen K-edge in comparison with crystalline oxides as monoclinic m-WO3, orthorhombic α-MoO3, cubic Na0.6WO3, layered-type hexagonal h-WO3 and WO3·H2O, having variable electronic and atomic structure. The changes in the XANES ranging 10–15 eV above the absorption edge are interpreted based on the known band-structure calculations. The high-energy features are related to the multiple-scattering processes (EXAFS) at the nearest atoms.

Comparative Experimental and Theoretical Study of the C and O K-Edge X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy in Three Highly Popular, Low Spin Organoiron Compl…

2019

The unoccupied electronic structures of three closed-shell, highly popular organoiron complexes ([Fe(CO)5], [(η5-C5H5)Fe(CO)(μ-CO)]2, and [(η5-C5H5)2Fe]; 0, I, and II, respectively) have been investigated both experimentally and theoretically by combining original gas-phase X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) outcomes recorded at the C and O K-edge with results of scalar relativistic time-dependent density functional calculations carried out within the zeroth order regular approximation. Experimental evidence herein discussed complement the Fe L2,3-edges XAS ones we recently recorded, modeled, and assigned for the same complexes (Carlotto et al. Inorg. Chem. 2019, 58, 5844). The first-princ…

Microanalysis of the surfaces of natural iron-based minerals by means of synchrotron radiation based experimental techniques

2001

We investigated the surfaces of natural iron-based minerals that are magnetite, hematite, goethite, pyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, bornite and vivianite, using synchrotron radiation based techniques. Most iron chalkogenides are very suitable for photoemission microscopy studies due to their low resistivity, which prevents from surface charging. The local compositions were studied employing photoemission microscopy in combination with X-ray absorption spectroscopy. Imaging of the sample in the near-edge region of the absorption edges was used to visualise the spatial distributions of the chemical phases on the surface. Distributions of trace elements are imaged with high chemical and late…
