Vestibular Function after Acoustic Neuroma Removal with Preservation of One Branch of the Vestibular Nerve
2002
Background Vestibular compensation after acoustic neuroma surgery is affected by many parameters. Apart from surgical approach, age of the patient, and comorbidity, the use of rehabilitative vestibular training and the degree of preoperative vestibular compensation play their respective roles. Objective To examine whether and how surgical preservation of one branch of the vestibular nerve affects the compensation process in patients after acoustic neuroma removal. Study design Prospective study involving 29 patients with acoustic neuromas. In 15 patients operated on by the middle fossa or retrosigmoid approach, one branch of the vestibular nerve could be preserved intraoperatively, and the …
Quality of Life in Sporadic Vestibular Schwannoma: A Review
2009
Quality of life (QoL) measures are increasingly used as outcome measures in the assessment of different treatment options in clinical practice and as endpoints in clinical trials. Methods and questionnaires currently used for QoL assessment in vestibular schwannoma (VS) patients, studies evaluating QoL before and after treatment, studies on patients managed conservatively and studies evaluating facial-nerve-function-related QoL in VS patients are reviewed. Current methodological controversial issues in QoL studies on VS patients include the lack of a planned prospective comparison between QoL values before and after treatment, a need for the inclusion of additional questions along with stan…
Online Adaptation to Altered Auditory Feedback Is Predicted by Auditory Acuity and Not by Domain-General Executive Control Resources
2018
Published: 12 March 2018 When a speaker's auditory feedback is altered, he adapts for the perturbation by altering his own production, which demonstrates the role of auditory feedback in speech motor control. In the present study, we explored the role of auditory acuity and executive control in this process. Based on the DIVA model and the major cognitive control models, we expected that higher auditory acuity, and better executive control skills would predict larger adaptation to the alteration. Thirty-six Spanish native speakers performed an altered auditory feedback experiment, executive control (numerical Stroop, Simon and Flanker) tasks, and auditory acuity tasks (loudness, pitch, and …
Steroid and vasoactive treatment for acute deafness after attempted hearing preservation acoustic neuroma surgery.
2004
<i>Objective:</i> To investigate whether intravenous steroid and vasoactive therapy in the acute postoperative period improves hearing outcome in patients who develop acute deafness after attempted hearing preservation surgery for acoustic neuroma (AN) through a retrosigmoid or a middle cranial fossa approach. <i>Study Design and Setting:</i> Retrospective controlled study in a tertiary care center. Thirty-six patients who had developed acute deafness after hearing preservation surgery for treatment of an AN were reviewed. Preoperative AAOHNS hearing class was A in 2, B in 2 and D in 32 patients. Twenty-seven patients were treated with prednisolone, hydroxyethyl star…
Optical Properties of III-V Nanowires and Their Application for Charge Transport and Single-Photon Emission
2012
This work covers the optical characterization of III-V semiconductor nanowires and their application for charge transport and for single-photon emission. InAs nanowires have been investigated by Raman scattering and PL spectroscopy. The possibility to grow nanowires with a crystal structure different from its bulk counterpart has aroused a lot of interest in their optical and electronic properties. Here, the optical phonon modes of wurtzite InAs nanowires have been studied by polarized Raman scattering. For the first time, Raman measurements on a single InAs nanowire have revealed the A1(TO) and E2h optical phonon modes of the wurtzite structure. Additional resonant Raman scattering experim…
Modification of a commercial atomic force microscopy for low-noise, high-resolution frequency-modulation imaging in liquid environment.
2011
A key issue for high-resolution frequency-modulation atomic force microscopy imaging in liquids is minimizing the frequency noise, which requires a detailed analysis of the corresponding noise contributions. In this paper, we present a detailed description for modifying a commercial atomic force microscope (Bruker MultiMode V with Nanoscope V controller), aiming at atomic-resolution frequency-modulation imaging in ambient and in liquid environment. Care was taken to maintain the AFMs original stability and ease of operation. The new system builds upon an optimized light source, a new photodiode and an entirely new amplifier. Moreover, we introduce a home-built liquid cell and sample holder …
Modeling epidemics through ladder operators
2020
Highlights • We propose an operatorial model to describe epidemics. • The model describes well the asymptotic numbers of the epidemics. • Ladder operators are used to model exchanges between the “actors” of the system.

A Channel-Aware Adaptive Modem for Underwater Acoustic Communications
2021
Acoustic underwater channels are very challenging, because of limited bandwidth, long propagation delays, extended multipath, severe attenuation, rapid time variation and large Doppler shifts. A plethora of underwater communication techniques have been developed for dealing with such a complexity, mostly tailoring specific applications scenarios which can not be considered as one-size-fits-all solutions. Indeed, the design of environment-specific solutions is especially critical for modulations with high spectral efficiency, which are very sensitive to channel characteristics. In this paper, we design and implement a software-defined modem able to dynamically estimate the acoustic channel c…
