Color-coded duplex endoscopic ultrasound of the adrenals.
2008
Imaging of the adrenals by endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) is a valuable technique for detection and localization of adrenal lesions, but endosonomorphological tumor distinction remains difficult. In this single-center study, the amount of blood flow in common adrenal lesions, such as adrenal adenomas, adrenal hyperplasia, and pheochromocytomas, was visualized by color-coded duplex EUS (CD-EUS) and was retrospectively analysed. Therefore, we reviewed our EUS database to evaluate and correlate the perfusion patterns of common adrenal lesions with histologically confirmed diagnosis, possible malignancy, and endosonomorphological features such as echogeneity, echostructure, and tumor size. CD-EUS …
Intracranial pathology of the visual pathway.
2004
Intracranial pathologies involving the visual pathway are manifold. Aligning to anatomy, the most frequent and/or most important extrinsic and intrinsic intracranial lesions are presented. Clinical symptoms and imaging characteristics of lesions of the sellar region are demonstrated in different imaging modalities. The extrinsic lesions mainly consist of pituitary adenomas, meningeomas, craniopharyngeomas and chordomas. In (asymptomatic and symptomatic) aneurysms, different neurological symptoms depend on the location of aneurysms of the circle of Willis. Intrinsic tumors as astrocytoma of any grade, ependymoma and primary CNS-lymphoma require the main pathology in the course of the visual …
Differentiation of hepatocellular adenoma by subtype and hepatocellular carcinoma in non-cirrhotic liver by fractal analysis of perfusion MRI.
2022
Abstract Background To investigate whether fractal analysis of perfusion differentiates hepatocellular adenoma (HCA) subtypes and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in non-cirrhotic liver by quantifying perfusion chaos using four-dimensional dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (4D-DCE-MRI). Results A retrospective population of 63 patients (47 female) with histopathologically characterized HCA and HCC in non-cirrhotic livers was investigated. Our population consisted of 13 hepatocyte nuclear factor (HNF)-1α-inactivated (H-HCAs), 7 β-catenin-exon-3-mutated (bex3-HCAs), 27 inflammatory HCAs (I-HCAs), and 16 HCCs. Four-dimensional fractal analysis was applied to arterial, portal v…
Abstract LB-382: Identification of predisposing genes for small bowel adenocarcinoma by exome sequencing
2018
Abstract Small bowel adenocarcinoma (SBA) is a rare but aggressive cancer type with limited treatment options. Known predisposing factors include Crohn's disease, celiac disease, and hereditary syndromes such as familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP), Lynch syndrome, and Peutz-Jeghers syndrome. Here, our aim was to further characterize genetic susceptibility to SBA in a large population-based cohort and simultaneously demonstrate the ability to utilize tumor-only data to cost-effectively but reliably call germline variants. Information on all SBAs diagnosed in Finland between the years 2003-2011 were collected utilizing the Finnish Cancer Registry that maintains a nation-wide database on all …
Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis
1977
The Association of H1N1 Pandemic Influenza with Congenital Anomaly Prevalence in Europe
2015
BACKGROUND: In the context of the European Surveillance of Congenital Anomalies (EUROCAT) surveillance response to the 2009 influenza pandemic, we sought to establish whether there was a detectable increase of congenital anomaly prevalence among pregnancies exposed to influenza seasons in general, and whether any increase was greater during the 2009 pandemic than during other seasons.METHODS: We performed an ecologic time series analysis based on 26,967 pregnancies with nonchromosomal congenital anomaly conceived from January 2007 to March 2011, reported by 15 EUROCAT registries. Analysis was performed for EUROCAT-defined anomaly subgroups, divided by whether there was a prior hypothesis of…
Large-sized pleomorphic adenoma of the cheek treated with Nd:Yag laser: Report of a case and review of the literature
2020
Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) mostly involves parotid glands, while extra-parotid localizations are relatively uncommon. Particularly, PAs of the cheek minor salivary glands with a size larger than 4 cm are exceedingly rare, with only few cases reported. Surgical treatment of PA usually consists in radical excision. However, despite a presumptive radicality, recurrences, sometimes followed by malignant transformation, may occur. Here we report a case of a large-sized (6 cm) PA of the cheek minor salivary glands in a 70 year-old female patient, successfully treated through a conservative approach, based on the use of Nd:YAG Laser (λ=1064 nm). No recurrences were observed after a 2-year follow-up.…

Corticotroph aggressive pituitary tumours and carcinomas frequently harbour ATRX mutations
2021
Abstract Context Aggressive pituitary tumors (APTs) are characterized by unusually rapid growth and lack of response to standard treatment. About 1% to 2% develop metastases being classified as pituitary carcinomas (PCs). For unknown reasons, the corticotroph tumors are overrepresented among APTs and PCs. Mutations in the alpha thalassemia/mental retardation syndrome X-linked (ATRX) gene, regulating chromatin remodeling and telomere maintenance, have been implicated in the development of several cancer types, including neuroendocrine tumors. Objective To study ATRX protein expression and mutational status of the ATRX gene in APTs and PCs. Design We investigated ATRX protein expression by us…
