EARLY VASCULAR AGING IN NORMOTENSIVE SUBJECTS WITH SYSTEMIC LUPUS ERYTHEMATOSUS. COMPARISON WITH YOUNG HYPERTENSIVE PATIENTS

2015

Introduction: It is well known that connective tissue diseases, like Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, are associated with early and accelerated atherosclerosis. During the last year, it has well established the concept of ‘‘Early vascular aging’’ (EVA), whose the aortic stiffness represents one of the most important markers. Aim: To evaluate early vascular aging, assessed by measuring Aortic pulse wave velocity (aPWV), as an arterial stiffness index, in a group of normotensive patients with SLE and to compare these subjects with a group of young essential hypertensive (EH) individuals. Methods: In this cross-sectional study we have enrolled 50 normotensive SLE subjects (45 women and 5 men) with…

The magnesium global network (MaGNet) to promote research on magnesium in diseases focusing on covid-19

2021

When the current SARS-CoV-2 pandemic began in early 2020, the global magnesium researcher community came together and noted the striking similarities between COVID-19 risk factors and conditions associated with magnesium deficit state in humans, reasoning that magnesium deficiency could worsen the course of COVID-19 [1-4]. This prompted establishment of a worldwide collaborative network with regular virtual meetings to brainstorm the associations between magnesium and COVID-19. We hypothesize that magnesium deficiency, a common but mostly unrecognized state in modern global societies, could be an important component of the susceptibility to SARS-CoV-2 infection. Consequently, restoring the …

Psychometric properties of the Spanish version of the Temporal Satisfaction with Life Scale (TSLS): A study on elderly attending to university progra…

2015

Several measures have been developed for the operalization of well-being, standing out the Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS). To cope with some of its problems the Temporal Satisfaction with Life Scale (TSLS) was developed. The aim of this study is to present and validate the Spanish version of the TSLS, in a sample elderly attending to University programs. The sample was composed of 737 elderly. Together with the TSLS, an indicator of general life satisfaction and the SF-8 Health Scale were used. Analyses included the study of factorial validity, estimations of reliability and external validity. Results of the confirmatory factor analysis were adequate: χ2(87)=454.593 (p<.001), CFI=.9…

Validation of an explicative model of the successful aging process with psychological, physical, relational, and leisure variables

2015

Increasingly, research on the aging process tends to adopt a dual perspective emic (specific to a culture) and etic (universal), requiring further studies to address this cross-cultural approach. The aim is to obtain an empirical answer to the question of whether a model of successful aging raised from a different context such as the Taiwanese context, is suitable to represent this process in our elders. The sample consisted of 737 elderly. Socio-demographic-data and different scales to assess life satisfaction, leisure, health, and social support were collected. A structural equation model taken from Lee et al. (2011), in which leisure, health and social support predicted life satisfaction…

RETA A TU MENTE, DESAFÍA A TU CEREBRO: COMPLEJIDAD AMBIENTAL Y SALUD CEREBRAL

2016

Abstract.According to the World Health Organization, it is estimated that more than 30 million people suffer from Alzheimer’s disease in the world. Currently, there is great interest in developing strategies to counteract the cognitive decline that accompanies aging and, to a greater extent, neurodegenerative diseases. The aim of the current study is to analyze the experimental evidence supporting the hypothesis that interventions based on novelty and complexity are more effective in order to achieve successful aging. In animal models it has shown that enriched environments and performing voluntary exercise can improve performance in learning and memory tasks, decrease anxiety response and …

Prospective study of population aging in Verviers District (wallonia, belgium).

2013

Aging population has become an important issue and challenge in most Western Europe countries. This substantive change is likely to deeply affect the structure and the way our societies work (European commission, 2012a). Furthermore, aging population and its consequences are now a sensitive topic in policy at both European and national levels, especially concerning budget discussions and the increased societal costs linked to the phenomenon (European commission, 2012b). However, at more local scales, the topic is not fully integrated in urban or regional policies yet. This situation can be seen as a paradox since local collectivities will have to concretely deal with the impacts and the gro…

Determination of the cultivar and aging of Sicilian olive oils using HPLC-MS and linear discriminant analysis

2010

A large number of certified samples (84) of Sicilian olive oils arising from the eight cultivars most represented in Sicily (Biancolilla, Cerasuola, Moresca, Nocellara del Belice, Nocellara Etnea, Oglialora Messinese, Brandofino and Tonda Iblea) have been collected and analyzed by HPLC/MS using an atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI) source. The sample preparation is very simple; in fact, the oil samples are diluted without any chemical derivatization. A following statistical data treatment by general discriminant analysis (GDA) allows the determination of the olive oil cultivar. Furthermore, changes in the composition of glyceridic components of the olive oils lead to easy discr…

Photoelastic stress analysis assisted evaluation of fracture toughness in hydrothermally aged epoxies

2014

The present work has investigated the fracture toughness of a model DGEBA epoxy system subject to Hidro-Thermal aging. A Photoelastic Stress Analysis technique has been implemented, showing the evolution of stresses arising throughout the water uptake process due to the non-uniform swelling of the material. Gravimetric and Dynamic Mechanical Thermal Analyses have further complemented the characterization, showing the onset of plasticization effects with aging. The correlation of all previous characterizations has allowed to conclude that an increase of KIC fracture toughness is obtained at the fully saturated condition. In particular Photoelasticity has also revealed the onset of relevant s…

Influence of artificial aging and ZrO2 nanoparticle-reinforced repair resin on the denture repair strength

2019

Background The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of aging process on the tensile strength (TS) of repaired acrylic denture base using ZrO2 nanoparticles (nano-ZrO2)-reinforced autopolymerized resin. Material and Methods A total of 240 heat-polymerized acrylic resin specimens (n=10) were prepared and sectioned creating 2 mm-repair-gap. Autopolymerized acrylic resin, pure and modified with 2.5, 5, and 7.5wt% nano-ZrO2 were used for specimens repair. TS of repaired specimens were measured using the universal testing machine after water immersion at 37oC for 2, 7 and 30 days. At each time interval, half the immersed specimens underwent thermo-cycling aging process (5000 cycles at…
