Do robots complement or substitute for older workers?

2021

Abstract The impact of robotization on labor market outcomes has been recently empirically investigated along several directions, including employment, wages and labor productivity. This work contributes to this literature by looking for heterogeneous effects of robots on the workforce, analyzed by age cohorts. Relying on a panel of data from IFR (2019) and EU KLEMS (2009) over the years 1994–2005, we find consistent evidence of higher complementarity between robots and older workers (hours worked by employees aged 50 and over), and a greater substitutability among robots and younger cohorts of the labor market. These findings are robust to age group disaggregation and specific capital pric…

Measurement of white wines resistance against oxidation by Electron Paramagnetic Resonance spectroscopy

2018

International audience; Free radical theory of aging hypothesizes that oxygen-derived radicals are responsible for the storage-related flavor instability in wine. In an optimal situation, a balanced-distribution exists between oxidants and antioxidants among wines intrinsic/extrinsic metabolites. Based on the kinetic study of POBN-1-hydroxyethyl spin adduct (POBN-1-HER) formation in wines initiated via the Fenton reaction, a novel tool based on EPR spin trapping methodology was developed to quantify wines resistance against oxidation. Antioxidant capacities of wines were evaluated according to POBN-1-HER maximum signal intensity (Imax POBN-1-HER) and rate formation (r(POBN-1-HER)) kinetic p…

Hydrothermal aging of carbon reinforced epoxy laminates with nanofibrous mats as toughening interlayers

2016

Electrospun mats have been applied as toughening interlayers in high performance carbon fiber epoxy composites. While the toughening mechanism exerted by the mat at the interface is the subject of several recent studies, no investigations are reported on the aging behaviour of laminates comprising these nanostructured elements. This work investigates the influence of the combined effect of water and temperature (90 °C) on laminates with Nylon 6,6 electrospun membranes placed either at the middle plane only or at each interlayer. The water-uptake behaviour is modelled by a two-stage diffusion model and compared with the behaviour of the neat resin and of the laminate without mats. Interestin…

Frequency stability in microgrid: control strategies and analysis of BESS aging effects

2016

In order to ensure a thorough analysis, all components placed in a microgrid would have to be considered to guarantee an effective energy management. To this aim, various algorithms are used both to preserve and restore power systems after significant disturbances. However, these models frequently do not evaluate components performance decline with the age and, consequently, they don't consider actual values during microgrid analysis, potentially affecting obtained results. In particular, evaluating energy storage systems aging and their effects has rarely been addressed in prior works. The present article proposes a model to maintain power system/microgrid stability after disturbances usin…

The Association Between Epigenetic Clocks and Physical Functioning in Older Women: A 3-Year Follow-up

2021

Abstract Background Epigenetic clocks are composite markers developed to predict chronological age or mortality risk from DNA methylation (DNAm) data. The present study investigated the associations between 4 epigenetic clocks (Horvath’s and Hannum’s DNAmAge and DNAm GrimAge and PhenoAge) and physical functioning during a 3-year follow-up. Method We studied 63- to 76-year-old women (N = 413) from the Finnish Twin Study on Aging. DNAm was measured from blood samples at baseline. Age acceleration (AgeAccel), that is, discrepancy between chronological age and DNAm age, was determined as residuals from linear model. Physical functioning was assessed under standardized laboratory conditions at b…

Sugar reduction in extruded cereal based products : impact of water content on the structure and molecular dynamics in such material

2019

Low-moisture biopolymer-based systems are commonly encountered in food. Obviously, understanding the physical basis of their quality: e.g texture, or performance over time or as a function of their composition is of primary importance. The objectives of this work were to evaluate how the presence of sucrose and water content affects physico-chemical properties. The physical stability of these materials were monitored through an insight at different molecular scales. Then the relations between the multi-scale studies were investigated. The effect of sucrose (0–20%) and feed water (10 and 15%) on extrusion blends was studied using a twin screw extruder under the same processing settings. The …
