AbstractObjective:Excessive alcohol consumption during reproductive years may impact the integrity of developing eggs and sperm, potentially affecting the life-long health of future children. Inadequate diets could aggravate these preconception effects of alcohol. Identification of bound alcohols in soil humic acids by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry

International audience; Humic acids are complex, partly macromolecular, yellow-brownish substances occurring in soils, waters and sediments. In order to shed some light on their molecular structure, crop humic acids were cleaved by alkaline hydrolysis (KOH). The products were fractionated by thin layer chromatography to give mono-alcohols which were analysed as acetate derivatives by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. Linear alcohols, sterols, stanols and plant-derived triterpenoid alcohols were identified by co-injection of pure standards and by comparison with literature data. Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) is a frequent cause of mental retardation. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying brain development defects induced by maternal alcohol consumption during pregnancy are unclear. We used normal and Hsf2-deficient mice and cell systems to uncover a pivotal role for heat shock factor 2 (HSF2) in radial neuronal migration defects in the cortex, a hallmark of fetal alcohol exposure. Regulation of the synthesis of aryl metabolites by phospholipid sources in the white-rot fungus Bjerkandera adusta

The white-rot basidiomycete Bjerkandera adusta was cultivated in a liquid medium enriched with l-phenylalanine and various phospholipid sources (lecithin, egg yolk and asolectin). Three aromatic metabolites (benzaldehyde, benzyl alcohol and benzoic acid) were produced under these culture conditions. High concentrations of benzaldehyde (404 mg l–1) were obtained when the cultures were supplemented with 10 g lecithin l–1. Benzyl alcohol production was promoted when the strain was grown with 5 or 10 g lecithin l–1.
