New Tools for Characterizing Metallic Nanoparticles: AgNPs, A Case Study.

Currently, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is the main technique for estimating the sizes of spherical nanoparticles (NPs) and through them, their concentrations. This paper demonstrates for the first time that C18 reversed-phase capillary liquid chromatography (Cap-LC) coupled to diode array detection (DAD) has the potential to estimate mean concentrations of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and thereby determine their average size. FeMnOx-1: A new microanalytical reference material for the investigation of Mn–Fe rich geological samples

Suitable Mn-Fe rich microanalytical reference materials (MRMs) as calibration material for laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICPMS) have not been available. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) in collaboration with the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry has prepared a synthetic MRM, FeMnOx-1, with elevated mass fractions of MnO (25 g/100 g), Fe2O3 (8.5 g/100 g) and high mass fractions of 25 trace elements varying between 200 and 5000 mg/kg. Abstract Solid-state NMR spectroscopy was applied to characterize the wooden part of a roman Rostrum recovered in the Tyrrhenian Sea in the Acqualadroni area (Messina, Italy). The Acqualadroni Rostrum has been, in the recent past, investigated to establish its provenance and conservation. In this paper, solid-state NMR was used to obtain information on the conservation state of the wood as a preliminary step for the conservation process. A wooden sample of this artifact, collected by coring, was divided in four parts in order to correlate the conservation state to the depth. Authentication of protected designation of origin artichokes by spectroscopy methods

Abstract Artichoke samples with the protected designation of origin (PDO) ‘Alcachofa de Benicarlo’ were discriminated from those produced in other towns surrounding Valencia and Murcia, outside the PDO frame. The importance of incorporating a waste detoxification step in analytical methodologies

2015

The introduction of a waste detoxification step in the analytical process was highlighted using, as example, the determination of copper in pesticide formulations using electrogravimetry, flame atomic absorption spectroscopy and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy. This quantitative study showed the improvement of the previously mentioned analytical methods, from a green perspective, after addition of electrodeposition or neutralization steps to the analytical process. Based on this, the application of the eco-scale and the Green Certificate to the evaluation of these methodologies allows the method to be moved from the B and C classes to the A class.

Evaluation of olfactory intensity : comparative study of two methods

Two experimental procedures recommended for the evaluation of the psychophysical characteristics of odorous compounds, olfactory matching with the 1-butanol scale and cross-modality matching with the finger span are compared. The intensity of ethyl butyrate and guaiacol solutions presented at four different concentration levels was evaluated by a panel of sixteen subjects over five repetitions using the two methods.
