Multi-residue determination of 47 organic compounds in water, soil, sediment and fish—Turia River as case study
2017
A sensitive and reliable method based on solid-liquid extraction (SLE) using McIlvaine-Na2EDTA buffer (pH = 4.5)-methanol and solid-phase extraction (SPE) clean up prior to ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC–MS/MS) was applied to determine 47 organic contaminants in fish, soil and sediments. The SPE procedure to clean-up the extracts was also used as extraction method to determine these compounds in water. Recoveries ranged from 38 to 104% for all matrices with RSDs 50% for 36 compounds in front of 9, matrix effect < 20% for 31 compounds against 21, and LOQs <25 ng g−1 for 38 compounds against 22) indicates that the proposed method is mor…
Prologue to the Spanish translation of Michael Dummett, Origins of analitical philosophy
2020
After an examination of the motivations behind the writing of 'Origins of analitical philosophy,' the discussion moves on to themes which are central to Dummett's book such as: the priority thesis, the linguistic turn, the comparison between some important aspects of Frege's and Husserl's philosophies, the relationship between language and thought. The Prologue ends with an examination of the Dummettian concept of proto-thought, as a thought whose vehicle is not language, which seems to open the way for the use of the empirical sciences in the construction of a theory of thought. This, of course, could have, for Dummett, at least one unwelcome conseguence: a strong drive to produce a philos…
A cloud based architecture to support Electronic Health Record.
2014
We introduce a novel framework of electronic healthcare enabled by a Cloud platform able to host both Hospital Information Systems (HIS) and Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems and implement an innovative model of Electronic Health Record (EHR) that is not only patient-oriented but also supports a better governance of the whole healthcare system. The proposed EHR model adopts the state of the art of the Cloud technologies, being able to join the different clinical data of the patient stored within the HISs and EMRs either placed into a local Data Center or hosted into a Cloud Platform enabling new directions of data analysis.
Soil Water Content Assessment: Critical Issues Concerning the Operational Application of the Triangle Method
2015
Knowledge of soil water content plays a key role in water management efforts to improve irrigation efficiency. Among the indirect estimation methods of soil water content via Earth Observation data is the triangle method, used to analyze optical and thermal features because these are primarily controlled by water content within the near-surface evaporation layer and root zone in bare and vegetated soils. Although the soil-vegetation-atmosphere transfer theory describes the ongoing processes, theoretical models reveal limits for operational use. When applying simplified empirical formulations, meteorological forcing could be replaced with alternative variables when the above-canopy temperatu…
Fungi and Bacteria in Indoor Cultural Heritage Environments: Microbial-related Risks for Artworks and Human Health
2016
Cultural heritage constitutive materials can provide excellent substrates for microbial colonization, highly influenced by thermo-hygrometric parameters. In cultural heritage-related environments, a detrimental microbial load may be present both on manufacts surface and in the aerosol. In this study, bacterial and fungal colonisation has been investigated in three Sicilian confined environments (archive, cave and hypogea), each with peculiar structures and different thermo-hygrometric parameters. Particular attention has been paid to microorganisms able to induce artifacts biodeterioration and to release biological particles in the aerosol (spores, cellular debrides, toxins and allergens) p…
Development and optimization of confirmatory liquid chromatography—Orbitrap mass spectrometry method for the determination of 17 anticoccidials in po…
2018
A new sensitive and selective multi-residue method based on liquid chromatography - Orbitrap high resolution mass spectrometry (LC-Orbitrap-HRMS) was developed and validated for the determination of 17 anticoccidials in poultry and eggs. Instrumental parameters were optimized by the means of statistical experimental designs to improve the sensitivity, precision, and repeatability of the method. Further optimization of auto-tuned MS parameters led to an increase of signal intensity by 10% to 99% for 16 out of 17 analytes. The sample preparation procedure included extraction from muscle tissue and egg samples with acetonitrile, followed by preconcentration, reconstitution, and filtration. Val…
Optimising the efficiency of olive harvesting considering operator safety
2019
Mechanical-assisted harvesting of olives, which is carried out using hand-held harvesting units that detach the drupes through vibration supplied by electric motor or combustion engines, is a widespread method used in southern Italy. Such machines are able to harvest more than 80% of the overall quantity of olives available per tree in 5–10 min, but their performance is influenced by several factors related to the mechanical characteristics of the device and to the features of the trees. Here the problem of optimising harvesting efficiency whilst minimising the health risks to the operators is investigated, with the aim of demonstrating that it is possible to determine an optimum harvesting…
Measurement of white wines resistance against oxidation by Electron Paramagnetic Resonance spectroscopy
2018
International audience; Free radical theory of aging hypothesizes that oxygen-derived radicals are responsible for the storage-related flavor instability in wine. In an optimal situation, a balanced-distribution exists between oxidants and antioxidants among wines intrinsic/extrinsic metabolites. Based on the kinetic study of POBN-1-hydroxyethyl spin adduct (POBN-1-HER) formation in wines initiated via the Fenton reaction, a novel tool based on EPR spin trapping methodology was developed to quantify wines resistance against oxidation. Antioxidant capacities of wines were evaluated according to POBN-1-HER maximum signal intensity (Imax POBN-1-HER) and rate formation (r(POBN-1-HER)) kinetic p…
Early detection of contamination and defect in foodstuffs by electronic nose: A review
2017
Abstract Electronic nose (e-nose) has emerged as a potential instrument in various areas of food safety assessment for rapid early detection of contamination and defect in food production chain. E-nose is an innovative measurement system designed for detecting and discriminating complex odors through mimicking the working mechanism and the principal building blocks of the mammalian olfactory system. This paper describes a literature update of the applications of the e-nose for ensuring health and safety in the food industry. Finally, its future trend, perspectives and challenging problem are also mentioned.
