The squared symmetric FastICA estimator

2017

In this paper we study the theoretical properties of the deflation-based FastICA method, the original symmetric FastICA method, and a modified symmetric FastICA method, here called the squared symmetric FastICA. This modification is obtained by replacing the absolute values in the FastICA objective function by their squares. In the deflation-based case this replacement has no effect on the estimate since the maximization problem stays the same. However, in the symmetric case we obtain a different estimate which has been mentioned in the literature, but its theoretical properties have not been studied at all. In the paper we review the classic deflation-based and symmetric FastICA approaches…

Loomis-Whitney inequalities in Heisenberg groups

2021

This note concerns Loomis-Whitney inequalities in Heisenberg groups $\mathbb{H}^n$: $$|K| \lesssim \prod_{j=1}^{2n}|\pi_j(K)|^{\frac{n+1}{n(2n+1)}}, \qquad K \subset \mathbb{H}^n.$$ Here $\pi_{j}$, $j=1,\ldots,2n$, are the vertical Heisenberg projections to the hyperplanes $\{x_j=0\}$, respectively, and $|\cdot|$ refers to a natural Haar measure on either $\mathbb{H}^n$, or one of the hyperplanes. The Loomis-Whitney inequality in the first Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}^1$ is a direct consequence of known $L^p$ improving properties of the standard Radon transform in $\mathbb{R}^2$. In this note, we show how the Loomis-Whitney inequalities in higher dimensional Heisenberg groups can be deduced…

A Cornucopia of Carnot groups in Low Dimensions

2022

Abstract Stratified groups are those simply connected Lie groups whose Lie algebras admit a derivation for which the eigenspace with eigenvalue 1 is Lie generating. When a stratified group is equipped with a left-invariant path distance that is homogeneous with respect to the automorphisms induced by the derivation, this metric space is known as Carnot group. Carnot groups appear in several mathematical contexts. To understand their algebraic structure, it is useful to study some examples explicitly. In this work, we provide a list of low-dimensional stratified groups, express their Lie product, and present a basis of left-invariant vector fields, together with their respective left-invaria…

Polynomial and horizontally polynomial functions on Lie groups

2022

We generalize both the notion of polynomial functions on Lie groups and the notion of horizontally affine maps on Carnot groups. We fix a subset $S$ of the algebra $\mathfrak g$ of left-invariant vector fields on a Lie group $\mathbb G$ and we assume that $S$ Lie generates $\mathfrak g$. We say that a function $f:\mathbb G\to \mathbb R$ (or more generally a distribution on $\mathbb G$) is $S$-polynomial if for all $X\in S$ there exists $k\in \mathbb N$ such that the iterated derivative $X^k f$ is zero in the sense of distributions. First, we show that all $S$-polynomial functions (as well as distributions) are represented by analytic functions and, if the exponent $k$ in the previous defini…

Gradient estimates for heat kernels and harmonic functions

2020

Let $(X,d,\mu)$ be a doubling metric measure space endowed with a Dirichlet form $\E$ deriving from a "carr\'e du champ". Assume that $(X,d,\mu,\E)$ supports a scale-invariant $L^2$-Poincar\'e inequality. In this article, we study the following properties of harmonic functions, heat kernels and Riesz transforms for $p\in (2,\infty]$: (i) $(G_p)$: $L^p$-estimate for the gradient of the associated heat semigroup; (ii) $(RH_p)$: $L^p$-reverse H\"older inequality for the gradients of harmonic functions; (iii) $(R_p)$: $L^p$-boundedness of the Riesz transform ($p<\infty$); (iv) $(GBE)$: a generalised Bakry-\'Emery condition. We show that, for $p\in (2,\infty)$, (i), (ii) (iii) are equivalent, wh…

A proof of Carleson's 𝜀2-conjecture

2021

In this paper we provide a proof of the Carleson 𝜀2-conjecture. This result yields a characterization (up to exceptional sets of zero length) of the tangent points of a Jordan curve in terms of the finiteness of the associated Carleson 𝜀2-square function. peerReviewed

The variation of the maximal function of a radial function

2017

We study the problem concerning the variation of the Hardy-Littlewood maximal function in higher dimensions. As the main result, we prove that the variation of the non-centered Hardy-Littlewood maximal function of a radial function is comparable to the variation of the function itself.

Numerical analysis of dynamical systems : unstable periodic orbits, hidden transient chaotic sets, hidden attractors, and finite-time Lyapunov dimens…

2019

In this article, on the example of the known low-order dynamical models, namely Lorenz, Rössler and Vallis systems, the difficulties of reliable numerical analysis of chaotic dynamical systems are discussed. For the Lorenz system, the problems of existence of hidden chaotic attractors and hidden transient chaotic sets and their numerical investigation are considered. The problems of the numerical characterization of a chaotic attractor by calculating finite-time time Lyapunov exponents and finite-time Lyapunov dimension along one trajectory are demonstrated using the example of computing unstable periodic orbits in the Rössler system. Using the example of the Vallis system describing the El…

Solution of universal nonrelativistic nuclear DFT equations in the Cartesian deformed harmonic-oscillator basis. (IX) HFODD (v3.06h) : a new version …

2021

We describe the new version (v3.06h) of the code HFODD that solves the universal nonrelativistic nuclear DFT Hartree-Fock or Hartree-Fock-Bogolyubov problem by using the Cartesian deformed harmonic-oscillator basis. In the new version, we implemented the following new features: (i) zero-range three- and four-body central terms, (ii) zero-range three-body gradient terms, (iii) zero-range tensor terms, (iv) zero-range isospin-breaking terms, (v) finite-range higher-order regularized terms, (vi) finite-range separable terms, (vii) zero-range two-body pairing terms, (viii) multi-quasiparticle blocking, (ix) Pfaffian overlaps, (x) particle-number and parity symmetry restoration, (xi) axializatio…

Guaranteed lower bounds for cost functionals of time-periodic parabolic optimization problems

2019

In this paper, a new technique is shown for deriving computable, guaranteed lower bounds of functional type (minorants) for two different cost functionals subject to a parabolic time-periodic boundary value problem. Together with previous results on upper bounds (majorants) for one of the cost functionals, both minorants and majorants lead to two-sided estimates of functional type for the optimal control problem. Both upper and lower bounds are derived for the second new cost functional subject to the same parabolic PDE-constraints, but where the target is a desired gradient. The time-periodic optimal control problems are discretized by the multiharmonic finite element method leading to lar…
