The use of spiral CT in the detection and management of a permanent maxillary first molar with single root and single canal : a rare occurrence

2017

A sound knowledge of the normal tooth morphology and its numerous variations is essential to the success of endodontic therapy. While extra canals and lateral canals are routinely encountered and documented, there also exists the rare possibility of a fewer number of canals than normal. Early detection of such an occurrence is critical to the prevention of iatrogenic errors during endodontic treatment. The advent of spiral CT as a diagnostic tool serves as a much needed confirmation to understand the complex three dimensional anatomy of teeth. The aim of this case report is to highlight one such case reporting unusual morphology of the permanent maxillary first molar displaying single canal…

Dental anatomy portrayed with microscopic volume investigations

1993

The clinical treatment of the root canal of teeth--called endodontics--assumes a precise idea of the spatial arrangement of the anatomy of teeth and their inner structure. By using computer-assisted data acquisition from filmed sequences of histologic serial sections and a special kind of magnetic resonance microscope--the Stray Field Imaging (STRAFI)--volume investigations were carried out using special functions of a newly developed 3D software. Possible applications and future perspectives are discussed.

Scrittore epicureo anonimo, Opera incerta (PHerc. 1390/908). Edizione, introduzione e commentario, tavole

2019

The peculiar anonymous text handed down by PHerc.…

Lymnaea schirazensis, an Overlooked Snail Distorting Fascioliasis Data: Genotype, Phenotype, Ecology, Worldwide Spread, Susceptibility, Applicability

2011

BackgroundLymnaeid snails transmit medical and veterinary important trematodiases, mainly fascioliasis. Vector specificity of fasciolid parasites defines disease distribution and characteristics. Different lymnaeid species appear linked to different transmission and epidemiological patterns. Pronounced susceptibility differences to absolute resistance have been described among lymnaeid populations. When assessing disease characteristics in different endemic areas, unexpected results were obtained in studies on lymnaeid susceptibility to Fasciola. We undertook studies to understand this disease transmission heterogeneity.Methodology/principal findingsA ten-year study in Iran, Egypt, Spain, t…

Preparation protocols for SEM visualization of charred fossil plants: the case of Weichselia reticulata pinnule anatomy

2021

The cosmopolite Mesozoic fern Weichselia reticulata presents many peculiarities in the anatomy of its stem as well as in the architecture of its leaves. Previous analyses of the ultrastructure of their pinnule laminas provided some insight on xeromorphic traits. In this work new protocols for the preparation of charred compression foliage specimens embedded in a limestone matrix for their observation under SEM are presented, which enhance the observation of different plant tissues. The preparation with HCl allows for the visualization of the whole lamina, from the upper to the lower epidermis, which had not been done to date. Additionally, collodion, latex, or wax coverings of the fossils b…

Defective apoptosis as potential mechanism in the tumorogenesis of myelolipoma

1999

Apoptosis is considered an important mechanism of selective deletion that occurs during hematopoiesis. Myelolipoma is a rare benign tumor composed of adipose tissue and hematopoietic cells. The pathogenesis of this benign tumor is still unclear. Analysing the structural levels and apoptosis of normal human bone marrow (NHBM) and human myelolipoma (HM), the apoptotic events resulted abundantly present in NHBM compared to HM, which showed a small number of apoptotic cells. By contrast, Fas expression was strongly present both in NHBM and HM. These findings suggest that an altered function of Fas in myelolipoma is not able to trigger the apoptotic machinery. In conclusion, we hypothesize that …

Halloysite nanotubes: a green resource for materials and life sciences

2020

Clay minerals are considered one of the materials of the 20th century for their peculiar physico-chemical features. Among them, halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) are an emerging nanomaterial with a particular tubular structure that makes them a low cost and valuable alternative to the most common carbon nanotubes. Due to their tubular morphology, HNTs are employed in several fields acting as nanocontainers for different compounds for applications in drug carrier and delivery fields, catalysis, and as filler for polymeric matrices. The modification of HNTs’ surfaces allows to the synthesis of different nanoarchitectures that can improve the mechanical and thermal performance of polymer as well as …

Anti-angiogenic drug loaded liposomes: Nanotherapy for early atherosclerotic lesions in mice.

2018

Fumagillin-loaded liposomes were injected into ApoE-KO mice. The animals were divided into several groups to test the efficacy of this anti-angiogenic drug for early treatment of atherosclerotic lesions. Statistical analysis of the lesions revealed a decrease in the lesion size after 5 weeks of treatment.
