The synthesis of block copolymers via polymer conjugation of well-defined building blocks offers excellent control over the structures obtained, but often several coupling strategies need to be explored to find an efficient one depending on the building blocks. Calcium-binding proteins have been shown to be excellent markers of specific neuronal populations. We aimed to characterize the expression of calcium-binding proteins in identified populations of the cat extraocular motor nuclei by means of immunohistochemistry against parvalbumin, calretinin, and calbindin D-28k. Abducens, medial rectus, and trochlear motoneurons were retrogradely labeled with horseradish peroxidase from their corresponding muscles. Oculomotor and abducens internuclear neurons were retrogradely labeled after horseradish peroxidase injection into either the abducens or the oculomotor nucleus, respectively. The potato tuber moth is susceptible to at least three insecticidal crystal proteins (ICPs) from Bacillus thuringiensis: CrylA(b), CrylB, and CrylC. To design useful combinations of toxin genes either in transgenic plants or in new genetically modified B. thuringiensis strains, it is necessary to determine the binding characteristics of the different ICPs so as not to combine a pair sharing the same binding site. Hippocampal Sharp Waves: A Physiological Correlate of LTP?

The irregularly occurring large amplitude hippocampal sharp waves (SPWs) are correlated with synchronous population bursts of CA1-CA3 and subicular pyramidal cells, dentate granule cells and interneurons in all hippocampal fields. We suggest that the SPW-associated neuronal burst is the best candidate for a physiological basis of long-term potentiation (LTP).

Causal and Non-Causal Frequency Domain Assessment of Spontaneous Baroreflex Sensitivity after Myocardial Infarction

Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is thought to alter the baroreflex control of arterial pressure. We tested this hypothesis investigating the changes of the cardiovascular response after AMI in comparison with young and old healthy controls studied at rest and during head-up tilt, using causal and non-causal frequency domain measures of the baroreflex sensitivity. Distribution and Function of Gap Junction Coupling in Cortical GABAergic Neurons.

Although gap junctions have been observed in GABAergic interneurons of several brain regions, this chapter focuses on the distribution and functions of gap junctions and connexins in inhibitory interneurons of the cerebral cortex and hippocampus. Evidence for interconnections mediated by electrical synapses is reported for at least eight cerebral cortex interneuron types, classified on the basis of morphology, electrophysiology and molecular markers. Perceptual Interactions in Complex Odor Mixtures

The perception of everyday odors relies on elemental or configural processing of complex mixtures of odorants. Theoretically, the configural processing of a mixture could lead to the perception of a single specific odor for the mixture; however, such a type of perception has hardly been proven in human studies. Here, we report the results of a sorting task demonstrating that a six-component mixture carries an odor clearly distinct from the odors of its components. These results suggest a blending effect of individual components’ odors in mixtures containing more than three odorants.
