The Nymphaeum of the Tritons at Hierapolis of Phrygia (Turkey) from excavations to 3D-virtual reconstruction: an example of integrated methods in the…
2011
The Nymphaeum of the Tritons at Hierapolis of Phrygia is a monumental fountain of the Roman period with an imposing marble façade. Within the activities of the Italian Archaeological Mission the Nymphaeum is currently being studied by a team from the University of Messina with the goal of understanding its original layout and its history. The starting point of the study is the wealth of data provided by stratigraphic excavation of the building, particularly by the extensive archaeological deposits formed by the blocks of the façade collapsed into the pool of the fountain following an earthquake in the 7th century AD. The need to process a large amount of data required the creation of a comp…
Mining Landscapes in Sicily: Problems, Strategies and Perspectives
2015
Sicily has been characterised by a striking mining activity throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. It deeply changed the appearance of the internal areas of the Island, transforming natural and agricultural landscapes into industrial ones. When the extraction activities finally came to an end, the industrial landscape started to be regarded from another point of view, as a cultural and touristic value. However, mining landscape is today a wasted opportunity. Large parts of machines, railways and chimneys are disappearing due to carelessness and abandonment. Anyway, the crisis which is affecting Europe will eventually force us to look back at these territories as a possible resource to over…

A detailed analysis of the spatial distribution of Schöningen 13II-4 'Spear Horizon' faunal remains
2021
The Middle Pleistocene Schöningen 13II-4 'Spear Horizon' (Germany) is a key site for the study of human evolution, most notably for the discovery of Paleolithic wooden weaponry and evidence for developed hunting strategies. On the other hand, the 'Spear Horizon' offers an excellent opportunity to approach hominin spatial behavior, thanks to the richness of the archeological assemblage, its exceptional preservation, and the vast expanse of the excavated surface. Analyzing how space was used is essential for understanding hominin behavior at this unique open-air site and, from a wider perspective, for approaching how humans adapted to interglacial environments. In this article, we present an …
Maria Carolina d’Asburgo-Lorena a Palermo
2019
The essay reconstructs the events connected with the presence of Ferdinand and Maria Carolina in Palermo, the capital of the Kingdom of Sicily, where they stopped in December 1798 after a journey full of obstacles. Although distant and only indirectly affected by the dramatic events surrounding the republican experiments, the city - suffering from the political emergency and the unstable military situation - lived in fear of a feared French invasion and in the fear of the simultaneous presence of Spanish and English Troops caused tension.
Reverse Engineering, Rapid prototyping and augmented Reality: integrated techniques for new models of fruition of archeological heritage
2013
Reverse engineering (RE) and Rapid Prototyping (RP) have long been used for the representation, interpretation and communication of artistic and archaeological heritage, as well as their museum fruition. An application is given by the construction of models for tactile perception for blind-users: it has been developed a model, in real scale, of a kantharos of the sixth century BC modeled with mixed techniques of rapid prototyping CNC with polymeric resin. Another possible application is the integration of RE and RP techniques with Augmented Reality (AR). It has been made an experiment on the model of the Temple of Castor and Pollux in Agrigento. The physical model, made with additive proces…
