This review provides an overview on the development of the rodent whisker-to-barrel cortex system from late embryonic stage to the end of the first postnatal month. During this period the system shows a remarkable transition from a mostly genetic-molecular driven generation of crude connectivity, providing the template for activity-dependent structural and functional maturation and plasticity, to the manifestation of a complex behavioral repertoire including social interactions. Genome-wide association meta-analysis for early age-related macular degeneration highlights novel loci and insights for advanced disease

Abstract Background Advanced age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of blindness. While around half of the genetic contribution to advanced AMD has been uncovered, little is known about the genetic architecture of early AMD. Methods To identify genetic factors for early AMD, we conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) meta-analysis (14,034 cases, 91,214 controls, 11 sources of data including the International AMD Genomics Consortium, IAMDGC, and UK Biobank, UKBB). Abstract Several factors contribute to the likelihood of experiencing illusory sensations of self-motion (i.e., vection) in Virtual Reality (VR) applications. VR users can also experience adverse effects such as disorientation, oculomotor issues, or nausea known as visually induced motion sickness (VIMS). Building an Optimal WSD Ensemble Using Per-Word Selection of Best System

In Senseval workshops for evaluating WSD systems [1,4,9], no one system or system type (classifier algorithm, type of system ensemble, extracted feature set, lexical knowledge source etc.) has been discovered that resolves all ambiguous words into their senses in a superior way. This paper presents a novel method for selecting the best system for target word based on readily available word features (number of senses, average amount of training per sense, dominant sense ratio). Abstract This paper explores novel ways to consider semantic–pragmatic cycles using a dual strategy: an inwards strategy, whereby the distinctive traits of a pragmatic cycle are established, and an outwards strategy, whereby the categories that delimit semantic–pragmatic cycles are described. The Structured Assessment Dialogue

The two key purposes of assessment, formative and summative, are often in a contradictory position if they are used concurrently. The summative assessment of learning will often prevent the formative assessment for learning to be realised (Butler, J Educ Psychol 79(4):474, 1987), meaning that the learning potential of the assessment will often be minimal. It is therefore a central challenge to find ways to combine the dual use of assessment. The structured assessment dialogue (SAD) is a candidate for such a combination.
