Altari

2019

the contribution identifies and analyzes the success and operational fallout in Sicilian architecture of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, of models for altars disseminated through the press. The theme of the altars indeed presents punctual connections with the world of model prints. As in other cases, these engravings were not only aimed at architects but were also intended for a wider world of operators, especially wood sculptors. Between the end of the seventeenth century and the first half of the eighteenth century, the project area in question knows mutations starting from new texts.

2023

The contribution aims to study the relationship between the traditional construction techniques of the territories of Proconsular Africa and those imported by the Romans and used in the construction of entertainment buildings, in particular theaters and amphitheatres, also taking into account the importation of typological models, starting from the “case study” of the theater of Althiburos. During the 1st and 2nd centuries AD there is a gradual introduction of Roman construction techniques, such as the opus caemaenticium, especially in the construction of substructures and vaults, sometimes with the importation of urban models, of techniques but also of Italic workers (just think of the opu…

Life Cycle Assessment of aluminum alloys chips recycling through single and multi-step Friction Stir Consolidation processes

2023

Manufacturing scientists have to find new processes enabling energy and resource efficient circular economy strategies. Solid state recycling processes have proved to be environmentally friendly alternatives to recycle aluminum alloys process scraps like chips. In this paper the environmental characterization of a solid state recycling process named Friction Stir Consolidation (FSC) is presented. A full Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) comparative analysis is developed: the environmental performance of new and different variants of FSC processes and remelting based routes are quantified and compared to one another. Also, different scenarios are analysed to provide guidelines for the correct impl…

An AmI-Based Software Architecture Enabling Evolutionary Computation in Blended Commerce: The Shopping Plan Application

2015

This work describes an approach to synergistically exploit ambient intelligence technologies, mobile devices, and evolutionary computation in order to support blended commerce or ubiquitous commerce scenarios. The work proposes a software architecture consisting of three main components: linked data for e-commerce, cloud-based services, and mobile apps. The three components implement a scenario where a shopping mall is presented as an intelligent environment in which customers use NFC capabilities of their smartphones in order to handle e-coupons produced, suggested, and consumed by the abovesaid environment. The main function of the intelligent environment is to help customers define shopp…

Sign Languages Recognition Based on Neural Network Architecture

2017

In the last years, many steps forward have been made in speech and natural languages recognition and were developed many virtual assistants such as Apple’s Siri, Google Now and Microsoft Cortana. Unfortunately, not everyone can use voice to communicate to other people and digital devices. Our system is a first step for extending the possibility of using virtual assistants to speech impaired people by providing an artificial sign languages recognition based on neural network architecture.

On Combinatorial Generation of Prefix Normal Words

2014

A prefix normal word is a binary word with the property that no substring has more 1s than the prefix of the same length. This class of words is important in the context of binary jumbled pattern matching. In this paper we present an efficient algorithm for exhaustively listing the prefix normal words with a fixed length. The algorithm is based on the fact that the language of prefix normal words is a bubble language, a class of binary languages with the property that, for any word w in the language, exchanging the first occurrence of 01 by 10 in w results in another word in the language. We prove that each prefix normal word is produced in O(n) amortized time, and conjecture, based on expe…

ASE narrow‐band noise pulsing in erbium‐doped fiber amplifier and its effect on self‐phase modulation

2019

In this paper, we report a study of the features of polarized and unpolarized narrow-band amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) in a low-doped erbium fiber at 976-nm pumping. We demonstrate that ASE noise can be treated as a train of Gaussian-like pulses with random magnitudes, widths, and inter-pulse intervals. ASE noise can also provide a statistical analysis of these three parameters. We also present the data that reveal ASE noise’s role in optical spectrum broadening through self-phase modulation of light propagating in a communication fiber. In particular, the data show that the ASE noise derivative defines the broadening’s spectral shape.

Architecture of a digital PFM controller for IC implementation

2006

This paper presents a digital controller architecture oriented to IC implementation. The classical digital pulse width modulator (D-PWM), using digital analog converter (DAC), is replaced with a Sigma-Delta (/spl Sigma//spl Delta/) modulator based on pulse frequency modulator (PFM) technique. Results of an investigation from a prototype for DC-DC converter, in terms of simulated and experimental performances, are reported, together with harmonic frequency investigation. The control function design is implemented on a field programmable gate array (FPGA). As a consequence of good agreement between simulated and experimental results, the proposed architecture realizes a digital control loop w…

Three-dimensional architecture of the whole human soleus muscle

2018

Background Most data on the architecture of the human soleus muscle have been obtained from cadaveric dissection or two-dimensional ultrasound imaging. We present the first comprehensive, quantitative study on the three-dimensional anatomy of the human soleus muscle in vivo using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) techniques. Methods We report three-dimensional fascicle lengths, pennation angles, fascicle curvatures, physiological cross-sectional areas and volumes in four compartments of the soleus at ankle joint angles of 69 ± 12° (plantarflexion, short muscle length; average ± SD across subjects) and 108 ± 7° (dorsiflexion, long muscle length) of six healthy young adults.
