Information Systems Architecture and Technology: Proceedings of 38th International Conference on Information Systems Architecture and Technology – IS…

2018

This three-volume set of books presents advances in the development of concepts and techniques in the area of new technologies and contemporary information system architectures. It guides readers through solving specific research and analytical problems to obtain useful knowledge and business value from the data. Each chapter provides an analysis of a specific technical problem, followed by the numerical analysis, simulation and implementation of the solution to the problem. The books constitute the refereed proceedings of the 2017 38th International Conference “Information Systems Architecture and Technology,” or ISAT 2017, held on September 17–19, 2017 in Szklarska Poręba, Poland. Bag-of-word based brand recognition using Markov Clustering Algorithm for codebook generation

2015

International audience; In order to address the issue of counterfeiting online, it is necessary to use automatic tools that analyze the large amount of information available over the Internet. Analysis methods that extract information about the content of the images are very promising for this purpose. In this paper, a method that automatically extract the brand of objects in images is proposed. The method does not explicitly search for text or logos. This information is implicitly included in the Bag-of-Words representation. In the Bag-of-Words paradigm, visual features are clustered to create the visual words. Despite its shortcomings, k-means is the most widely used algorithm. With k-mea…

Building emotional agents for strategic decision making

2015

Experimental economics has many works that demonstrate the influence of emotions and affective issues on the process of human strategic decision making. Personality, emotions and mood produce biases on what would be considered the strategic solution (Nash equilibrium) to many games. %CAMBIO% Thus considering these issues on simulations of human behavior may produce results more aligned with real situations. We think that computational agents are a suitable %CAMBIO% technology to simulate such phenomena. We propose to use O3A, an Open Affective Agent Architecture to model rational and affective agents, in order to perform simulations where agents must take decisions as close as possible to h…

Remarks on IEEE 802.11 DCF performance analysis

2005

This letter presents a new approach to evaluate the throughput/delay performance of the 802.11 distributed coordination function (DCF). Our approach relies on elementary conditional probability arguments rather than bidimensional Markov chains (as proposed in previous models) and can be easily extended to account for backoff operation more general than DCF's one.

Structured Output SVM for Remote Sensing Image Classification

2011

Traditional kernel classifiers assume independence among the classification outputs. As a consequence, each misclassification receives the same weight in the loss function. Moreover, the kernel function only takes into account the similarity between input values and ignores possible relationships between the classes to be predicted. These assumptions are not consistent for most of real-life problems. In the particular case of remote sensing data, this is not a good assumption either. Segmentation of images acquired by airborne or satellite sensors is a very active field of research in which one tries to classify a pixel into a predefined set of classes of interest (e.g. water, grass, trees,…

Developing hand-worn input and haptic support for real-world target finding

2019

Locating places in cities is typically facilitated by handheld mobile devices, which draw the visual attention of the user on the screen of the device instead of the surroundings. In this research, we aim at strengthening the connection between people and their surroundings through enabling mid-air gestural interaction with real-world landmarks and delivering information through audio to retain users' visual attention on the scene. Recent research on gesture-based and haptic techniques for such purposes has mainly considered handheld devices that eventually direct users' attention back to the devices. We contribute a hand-worn, mid-air gestural interaction design with directional vibrotacti…

Architecture of High Fidelity Simulation Tool for Crisis Management Training

2018

This paper addresses an ongoing project KriseSIM aiming at creating a virtual training tool for crisis management that should be realistic, flexible, scalable with highfidelity system architecture and user interface. Our goal is to accomplish high-level requirements developed through a codesign process with the crisis management stakeholders. In this paper, we describe a highfidelity training tool architecture, which follows the serious game design principles. The tool is designed as a resource management serious game genre, where the players will deal with limited resources and should respond based on various critical information flows. A preliminary result, i.e. the architecture and the t…

Outage Analysis of Relay-Aided Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access with Partial Relay Selection

2018

Non-Orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) holds promise as a spectrally efficient multiple access scheme for 5G communication networks. This work investigates the performance of NOMA in a dual-hop amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying network, which is subject to Nakagami-$m$ fading. Specifically, we obtain a novel closed-form expression of the outage probability for the near and far users when the partial relay selection (PRS) scheme is used for selecting the best among $N$ intermediate relays. The users are considered to employ selection combining technique in order to combine the relayed and the direct transmission signals for an increased reliability of detection. Then, we evaluate the impact o…

MEDiSN

2010

Staff shortages and an increasingly aging population are straining the ability of emergency departments to provide high quality care. At the same time, there is a growing concern about hospitals' ability to provide effective care during disaster events. For these reasons, tools that automate patient monitoring have the potential to greatly improve efficiency and quality of health care. Towards this goal, we have developed MEDiSN , a wireless sensor network for monitoring patients' physiological data in hospitals and during disaster events. MEDiSN comprises Physiological Monitors (PMs), which are custom-built, patient-worn motes that sample, encrypt, and sign physiological data and Relay Po…
