Small angle neutron scattering on periodically deformed polymers
1984
Small angle neutron scattering from periodically deformed samples is a useful extension of the methods presently available for the study of molecular dynamics of polymers. In this paper we describe apparatus that has been used to produce large cyclic deformations at frequencies upto 10 Hz and the principles by which data is collected to give spectra corresponding to different states of strain of the sample. Some data on model polydimethylsiloxane networks is given as an illustration of the value of this technique.
Graduate of Riga Polytechnic Institute, Engineer and Athlete Mārtiņš Stabiņš
2020
The aim of the article is to reveal the performance of Mārtiņš Stabiņš, a graduate of the Faculty of Automation and Computer Technology (1972; FACT) of Riga Polytechnic Institute (RPI), in the profession of engineer and high achievements in sports, becoming a Latvian champion in athletics several times, to reveal his daily life during his study years in the 1960s–1970s. Despite the fact that M. Stabiņš’ sports achievements have already described, this article summarizes his successes as well as reveals hitherto little-known and unpublished documents about his family, daily life, developments and interests. This is the first major research on the life of an engineer and athlete during seven …
Typical Aspects of the Microwave Noise Performance of HEMTs at Decreasing Temperatures
1996
In analog signal processing at microwave frequencies the noise performance of active devices is of fundamental importance for the accurate design of low-noise amplifiers. To this aim, the determination of the four noise parameters F O , Γ O (complex variable) and Rn has to be accomplished together with the usual scattering parameter measurements vs. frequency. In addition, the dependence of the device performance vs. temperature is of interest for circuit applications characterized by harsh environmental conditions. In this work the noise behavior of high electron mobility transistors has been investigated by means of measurements and modeling in the 2-18 GHz frequency range and as a functi…
Fermi-Dirac correlations in Lambda pairs in hadronic Z decays
2000
Two-particle correlations of Lambda Lambda and pairs have been studied in multihadronic Z decays recorded with the ALEPH detector at LEP in the years from 1992 to 1995. The correlations were measured as a function of the four-momentum difference Q of the pair. A depletion of events is observed in the region Q 2 GeV the fraction of pairs with spin one is consistent with the value of 0.75 expected for a statistical spin mixture, whilst for Q pairs, where no Fermi-Dirac correlations are expected, the spin one fraction is measured to be consistent with 0.75 over the entire analysed Q range. The taint of torture and the brazilian legal system
2019
In Brazil, the practice of torture intertwines deeply with its own history. The literature on the subject has had a greater intensification on its registers during the Dictatorial Regime (1964 to 1985). In spite of the Brazilian Constitution of 1988, Brazil only makes efforts to investigate the crimes of torture of this period to comply with the provisions of the United Nations in 2011. Within this scenario, the NationalTruth Commission (Law 12.528, of November 2011) was created with the purpose of clarifying the facts and circumstances of cases concerning human rights violations, as well as the Law on Access to Information (Law 12.527 of November 2011), which have regulated the constitutio…
Type II narrow double barrier quantum well structures : Γ-X coupling and interface effects
1993
Photoluminescence (PL), PL excitation and time resolved PL experiments have been performed on Al0.42Ga0.58As/AlAs/GaAs symmetric double barrier quantum wells (DBQW) with only one or two AlAs monolayers constituting the intermediate barriers. In agreement with the envelope function predictions we show that such DBQW's undergo a type I - type II transition when the GaAs thickness is reduced below 7 and 5 monolayers for 2 and 1 AlAs molecular planes respectively. In type II configuration the PL decay time is found to be strongly dependent on the energy difference between AlAs Xz - and GaAs Γ - electron confined states and the coupling parameter of the Γ and Xz valleys can be deduced (4.2 meV o…
Electrooptic beam deflection with latex
1988
The use of latex in electrooptic devices is proposed. The static non linearity coefficient is shown to be approximatively 200 times the optical one. The theory of a beam deflector is developed and an explicit expression is given for the deflection angle versus the physical parameters of the sample Utilisation de suspensions aqueuses de latex dans un dispositif electro-optique. On montre que le coefficient statique de non-linearite devrait etre 200 fois plus eleve que le coefficient optique. Application a un deflecteur optique
Historic constructions of the early multinational: on power, politics and culture in Pan Am narratives
2018
This paper examines how Pan American World Airways (Pan Am) - an early incarnation of a multinational enterprise (MNE) - developed its image as an international company. In particular, we examine how the company developed and managed potentially conflicting narratives, including the modernising US company and the airline of 'the Americas' (specifically South America); the carrier of US national interests and the politically neutral actor serving to unify cultures; the purveyor of exotic experiences and the pioneer of modernism. Through a focus on organisational narratives, we reveal the powerful influence of such story telling (through design and serendipity) on images of the peoples and co…
Global responsibility: An exploratory corpus assisted discourse analysis of the Rohingya crisis in online media
2021
This study conducts an exploratory corpus-assisted discourse analysis of the representation of the Rohingya minority group across online news media in the United Kingdom. The purpose of the study is to identify and interpret the discursive patterns employed in popular online news media when depicting the Rohingya minority and associated crises affecting the group in Myanmar and worldwide. Through the use of a combination of frequency, collocation, and concordance analysis, a synchronic study was undertaken using data collected from fifteen major online news media producers in the United Kingdom. The data was collected over a period from January 2017 – August 2020 through freely accessible d…
