The distribution of active RNA polymerase II along the transcribed region is gene-specific and controlled by elongation factors.

2010

In order to study the intragenic profiles of active transcription, we determined the relative levels of active RNA polymerase II present at the 3'- and 5'-ends of 261 yeast genes by run-on. The results obtained indicate that the 3'/5' run-on ratio varies among the genes studied by over 12 log(2) units. This ratio seems to be an intrinsic characteristic of each transcriptional unit and does not significantly correlate with gene length, G + C content or level of expression. The correlation between the 3'/5' RNA polymerase II ratios measured by run-on and those obtained by chromatin immunoprecipitation is poor, although the genes encoding ribosomal proteins present exceptionally low ratios in …

TileCal optical multiplexer board 9U prototype

2007

This paper presents the architecture and the status of the optical multiplexer board (OMB) for the ATLAS/LHC Tile hadronic calorimeter (TileCal). This board will analyze the front-end data CRC to prevent bit and burst errors produced by radiation. Besides, due to its position within the data acquisition chain it will be used to emulate front-end data for tests. The first two prototypes of the final OMB 9U version have been produced at CERN. Detailed design issues and manufacture features of these prototypes are described. These prototypes are being validated whereas some firmware developments are being implemented in the programmable devices of the board. Functional descriptions of the boar…

Performance analysis of the out-of-band signaling scheme for high speed wireless LANs

2005

In this paper, we study the performance of our earlier proposed out-of-band signaling (OBS) scheme for high speed wireless local area networks (WLANs). We employ the system approximation technique for modeling of the OBS scheme. An equivalent state dependent single server queue, that describes the OBS scheme, is constructed for the analysis of the throughput and delay performances. Moreover, we study the throughput optimization of the OBS scheme, which provides a means for optimizing the performance of the OBS scheme, given a particular network environment. Finally, we conduct several simulation experiments to validate our analytical results.

Optimal implementation of neural activation functions in programmable logic using fuzzy logic

2006

Abstract This work presents a methodology for implementing neural activation function in programmable logic using tools from fuzzy logic. This methodology will allow implementing these intrinsic non-linear functions using comparators and simple linear modellers, easily implemented in programmable logic. This work is particularized to the case of a hyperbolic tangent, the most common function in neural models, showing the excellent results yielded with the proposed approximation.

FRUIT QUALITY EVALUATION OF FOUR LOQUAT CULTIVARS GROWN IN SICILY

2011

Chemical (soluble solids content, titratable acidity, pH), morphological (weight, longitudinal and transversal diameter, thickness of the flesh, number of seeds, peel colour), and sensorial characteristics of four loquat cultivars (‘Algerie’, ‘Claudia’, ‘Nespolone di Trabia’ and ‘Sanfilippara’) from mature, organically-grown trees in Sicily, were analysed. The determinations were carried out by traditional instrumental techniques, by a panel test and by an electronic olfactory system. A panel of 10 trained judges was used to determine intensity of some attributes in the sensory profile of the different cultivars, while the electronic olfactory system was used to identify possible difference…

Photovoltaic performance of amorphous silicon flexible solar modules under mechanical loading

2007

The applications of photovoltaic devices can be significantly expanded by directly integrating them into structures. Solar cells integrated into structures can help to power a variety of devices such as structural monitoring sensors and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). However, little work has been reported in the literature on the performance of solar cells under deformation. Thus, a thorough investigation on the photovoltaic behavior of solar modules under mechanical loading is necessary in order to provide the optimal integration conditions for practical applications. The photovoltaic performance of commercially available amorphous silicon solar modules was tested under applied mechanica…

Nanowire Ordered Arrays for Electrochemical Sensing of H2O2

2016

Today, electrochemical sensors are considered very interesting in comparison to conventional techniques because they are very adaptable, cheap, have very low limit of detection and low detection time. The most used electrochemical technique is the amperometry . In amperometric sensors, a fixed potential is applied to the electrochemical cell, and a corresponding current, due to a reduction or oxidation reaction, is then obtained. This current it can be correlated with the bulk concentration of the detecting species (the solute) such as H2O2. Hydrogen peroxide is an essential mediator in food, pharmaceutical, clinical, industrial, and environmental analyses therefore, it is of great importan…

Pd-NWs ordered arrays for electrochemical sensing of H2O2

2016

In this work, we present the performance of nanostructured array of Pd (Pd-NWs) for electrochemical sensors of hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide is widely used in several fields, because to its oxidizing and reducing properties, like for treatment of waste water, paper and contaminated soils, as reagent in many chemical industries or like rocket propellant [1]. Furthermore, its presence or absence may be connected with many neurological deseases or/and with cancer [2].Today the most used methods for detection of that chemical are IR spectroscopy, spectrophotometry, fluorimetry, chemioluminescence and redox titration. However these methods are often uneconomical, have very high detection …
