Validity of rate equations for Zeeman coherences for analysis of nonlinear interaction of atoms with broadband laser radiation

2004

In this paper we, to our knowledge, for the first time obtain the rate equations for Zeeman coherences in the broad line approximation and steady-state balance equations directly from optical Bloch equations without the use of the perturbation theory. The broad line approximation allows us to use the adiabatic elimination procedure in order to eliminate the optical coherences from the optical Bloch equations, but the steady-state condition allows us to derive the balance equations straightforward. We compare our approach with the perturbation theory approach as given previously and show that our approach is more flexible in analyzing various experiments. Meanwhile we also show the validity …

Electric field induced hyperfine level-crossings in (nD)Cs at two-step laser excitation: experiment and theory

2005

The pure electric field level-crossing of m_F Zeeman sublevels of hyperfine F levels at two-step laser excitation was described theoretically and studied experimentally for the nD_3/2 states in Cs with n = 7,9, and 10, by applying a diode laser in the first 6S_1/2 to 6P_3/2 step and a diode or dye laser for the second 6P_3/2 to nD_3/2 step. Level-crossing resonance signals were observed in the nD_3/2 to 6P_1/2 fluorescence. A theoretical model was developed to describe quantitatively the resonance signals by correlation analysis of the optical Bloch equations in the case when an atom simultaneously interacts with two laser fields in the presence of an external dc electric field. The simulat…

Purely long-range polar molecules composed of identical lanthanide atoms

2019

International audience; Doubly polar molecules, possessing an electric dipole moment and a magnetic dipole moment, can strongly couple to both an external electric field and a magnetic field, providing unique opportunities to exert full control of the system quantum state at ultracold temperatures. We propose a method for creating a purely long-range doubly polar homonuclear molecule from a pair of strongly magnetic lanthanide atoms, one atom being in its ground level and the other in a superposition of quasi-degenerate opposite-parity excited levels [Phys. Rev. Lett. 121, 063201 (2018)]. The electric dipole moment is induced by coupling the excited levels with an external electric field. W…

Short-length storage of intense optical pulses in solid by adiabatic passage

2009

We propose a novel scheme of storage of intense pulses which allows a significant reduction of the storage length with respect to standard schemes. This scheme is particularly adapted to store optical information in media with fast relaxations.

Cluster-transfer reactions with radioactive beams: A spectroscopic tool for neutron-rich nuclei

2015

An exploratory experiment performed at REX-ISOLDE to investigate cluster-transfer reactions with radioactive beams in inverse kinematics is presented. The aim of the experiment was to test the potential of cluster-transfer reactions at the Coulomb barrier as a mechanism to explore the structure of exotic neutron-rich nuclei. The reactions Li7(Rb98,αxn) and Li7(Rb98,txn) were studied through particle-γ coincidence measurements, and the results are presented in terms of the observed excitation energies and spins. Moreover, the reaction mechanism is qualitatively discussed as a transfer of a clusterlike particle within a distorted-wave Born approximation framework. The results indicate that cl…

Twisted-Light-Ion Interaction: The Role of Longitudinal Fields.

2017

The propagation of light beams is well described using the paraxial approximation, where field components along the propagation direction are usually neglected. For strongly inhomogeneous or shaped light fields, however, this approximation may fail, leading to intriguing variations of the light-matter interaction. This is the case of twisted light having opposite orbital and spin angular momenta. We compare experimental data for the excitation of a quadrupole transition in a single trapped $^{40}$Ca$^+$ ion by Schmiegelow et al, Nat.\ Comm.\ 7, 12998 (2016), with a complete model where longitudinal components of the electric field are taken into account. Our model matches the experimental d…

Cascade coherence transfer and magneto-optical resonances at 455 nm excitation of Cesium

2010

We present and experimental and theoretical study of nonlinear magneto-optical resonances observed in the fluorescence to the ground state from the 7P_{3/2} state of cesium, which was populated directly by laser radiation at 455 nm, and from the 6P_{1/2} and 6P_{3/2} states, which were populated via cascade transitions that started from the 7P_{3/2} state and passed through various intermediate states. The laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) was observed as the magnetic field was scanned through zero. Signals were recorded for the two orthogonal, linearly polarized components of the LIF. We compared the measured signals with the results of calculations from a model that was based on the optica…

Ionization of Rb and Na Rydberg atoms by blackbody radiation

2007

This work presents the results of the numerical calculations of (blackbody radiation) BBR-induced photoionization rates of Rb and Na Rydberg nS, nP and nD atoms with n = 8-65 at the ambient temperatures of 77, 300 and 600 K.

Ionization of Rydberg atoms by blackbody radiation

2008

We have studied an ionization of alkali-metal Rydberg atoms by blackbody radiation (BBR). The results of the theoretical calculations of ionization rates of Li, Na, K, Rb and Cs Rydberg atoms are presented. Calculations have been performed for nS, nP and nD states which are commonly used in a variety of experiments, at principal quantum numbers n=8-65 and at the three ambient temperatures of 77, 300 and 600 K. A peculiarity of our calculations is that we take into account the contributions of BBR-induced redistribution of population between Rydberg states prior to photoionization and field ionization by extraction electric field pulses. The obtained results show that these phenomena affect …

Coherent population oscillations with nitrogen-vacancy color centers in diamond

2015

We present results of our research on two-field (two-frequency) microwave spectroscopy in nitrogen-vacancy (NV-) color centers in a diamond. Both fields are tuned to transitions between the spin sublevels of the NV- ensemble in the 3A2 ground state (one field has a fixed frequency while the second one is scanned). Particular attention is focused on the case where two microwaves fields drive the same transition between two NV- ground state sublevels (ms=0 -> ms=+1). In this case, the observed spectra exhibit a complex narrow structure composed of three Lorentzian resonances positioned at the pump-field frequency. The resonance widths and amplitudes depend on the lifetimes of the levels in…
