Nonlinear effects in optical pumping of a cold and slow atomic beam

By photoionizing hyperfine (HF) levels of the Cs state $6{\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}}^{2}{P}_{3/2}$ in a slow and cold atom beam, we find how their population depends on the excitation laser power. The long time (around $180\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}\ensuremath{\mu}\mathrm{s})$ spent by the slow atoms inside the resonant laser beam is large enough to enable exploration of a unique atom-light interaction regime heavily affected by time-dependent optical pumping. We demonstrate that, under such conditions, the onset of nonlinear effects in the population dynamics and optical pumping occurs at excitation laser intensities much smaller than the conventional respective saturation values. Collisional and thermal ionization of sodium Rydberg atoms: II. Theory fornS,nP andnD states withn= 5–25

A stochastic model of associative ionization in collisions of Rydberg atoms with ground-state atoms is presented. The conventional Duman–Shmatov–Mihajlov–Janev (DSMJ) model treats the ionization as excitation of Rydberg electron to the continuum by the electric-dipole field generated by exchange interaction within the quasi-molecular ion. The stochastic model essentially extends this treatment by taking into account redistribution of population over a range of Rydberg states prior to ionization, which is caused by non-adiabatic processes in overlapping multiple level crossings of quasi-molecular Rydberg states. Level structure of ^100Nb

2000

Levels in the odd-odd nucleus ${}^{100}\mathrm{Nb}$ situated at the edge of a region of especially fast shape transitions have been calculated in the framework of the interacting boson fermion fermion model. Levels observed in decay studies can be interpreted in a spherical basis. Low-lying ${I}^{\ensuremath{\pi}}{=8}^{+}$ and ${10}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ states are predicted. Their relationship with the unplaced levels populated with a $12 \ensuremath{\mu}\mathrm{s}$ delay after fission is discussed.

Investigation of the reaction 64Ni+238U being an option of synthesizing element 120

This study is concerned with the search for entrance channels suitable to synthesize elements with Z > 118. Mass-energy distributions as well as capture cross-sections of fission-like fragments have been measured for the reactions 64Ni + 238U → 302120 and 48Ca + 238U → 286112 at energies near the Coulomb barrier. Compound nucleus fission cross-sections were estimated from the analysis of mass and total kinetic energy distributions. The cross-section drops three orders of magnitude for the formation of the compound nucleus with Z = 120 obtained in the reaction 64Ni + 238U compared to the formation of the compound nucleus with Z = 112 obtained in the reaction 48Ca + 238U at an excitation ener…

The most fascinating feature of simple metal clusters is the existence of the electronic shell structure. This was observed first in alkali[1] and noble metals[2] and later also in some other nontransition metals[3,4,5]. The shell structure is a consequence of nearly free valence electrons confined to a finite volume. A spherical potential will always lead to a shell structure, the origin of which is the orbital angular momentum l and the large degeneracy (2l+1) associated with it. Our way of describing Nature is based on local relativistic quantum field theories, and then CPT symmetry, a natural consequence of Lorentz invariance, locality and hermiticity of the Hamiltonian, is one of the few if not the only prediction that all of them share. Therefore, testing CPT invariance does not test a particular model but the whole paradigm. Current and future long baseline experiments will assess the status of CPT in the neutrino sector at an unprecedented level and thus its distinction from similar experimental signatures arising from non-standard interactions is imperative. Stress-induced cytological and chemical adaptations in Cupressus plants from an urban area of Palermo (Italy)

We studied stress-induced cytological and chemical adaptations in Cupressus pollens and needles from the area of Palermo (Sicily, Italy), in polluted and control sites (unpolluted) of urban and suburban areas. Pollen and needle chemical composition were investigated to provide an indicator of contamination of the trees, which were also examined structurally throughout one year. The concentration of particulate with lead was found to be significantly higher in plants at the polluted traffic site. Lead is one of the worst particulate pollutants in cities, especially in the winter season. In trees from the polluted site, all structural analysis revealed displasies. Presence of phosphorylatedO-ribosyl-adenosine In T-ψ-stem of yeast methlonine initiator tRNA

We report in this paper on isolation and characterization of two unknown nucleosides G* and [A*] located in the T-psi-stem of yeast methionine initiator tRNA, using the combined means of HPLC protocols, real time UV-absorption spectrum, and post-run mass spectrometry by electron impact or fast atom bombardment. The G* nucleoside in position 65 was identified as unmodified guanosine.
