Temporal expectation and spectral expectation operate in distinct fashion on neuronal populations

The formation of temporal expectation (i.e., the prediction of ‘when’) is of prime importance to sensory processing. It can modulate sensory processing at early processing stages probably via the entrainment of low-frequency neuronal oscillations in the brain. However, sensory predictions involve not only temporal expectation but also spectral expectation (i.e., the prediction of ‘what’). Excitability and susceptibility of the brain's electrical activity during sleep: an analysis of late components of AEPs and VEPs.

We investigated ten healthy male subjects and measured late components of AEPs and VEPs during sleep. According to Rechtschaffen and Kales (1968) we performed an off-line scoring procedure of sleep-EEG and averaged the AEPs and VEPs of five different periods, corresponding to sleep stages I, II, III, IV and REM. From the averaged evoked potentials we computed the amplitude-frequency-characteristic (AFC) of the brain (Basar, 1980) during different sleep stages. These AFCs characterize transfer properties of an oscillating system. The N400 as a correlate of interpretively relevant linguistic rules: evidence from Hindi.

Classical views on the electrophysiology of language assume that different event-related potential (ERP) components index distinct linguistic subdomains. Hence, left-anterior negativities are often viewed as correlates of rule-based linguistic knowledge, whereas centro-parietal negativities (N400s) are taken to reflect (non-rule-based) semantic memory or aspects of lexical-semantic predictability. The present ERP study of case marking in Hindi challenges this clear-cut dichotomy. Primary motor area contribution to attentional reorienting after distraction

The anatomical structures involved in distraction-related processing in the auditory domain were investigated using magnetoencephalography. Participants performed a duration-discrimination task on a sequence of 200 and 400 ms long tones. Infrequent (12%) task-irrelevant pitch changes resulted in slower discriminative responses and more errors. Event-related potentials to these changes show an increased N1, a mismatch negativity, a P3a, and a reorienting negativity. Early auditory evoked potentials (EAEP) in vertebral basilar insufficiency

Stimulation with a short tone pip elicits an acoustic nerve compound action potential (I) and different waves (II--VII) in the inital 10 ms. Seven waves have been studied in 40 control subjects and five waves in 12 patients with vertebral-basilar insufficiency. Abnormalities of the different waves were observed at levels such as cochlea and/or acoustic nerve, medulla, caudal pons, rostral pons, and midbrain. The recording of early auditory evoked potentials (EAEP) is a noninvasive method of confirming impairment of the auditory pathway caused by a reduced vascular supply of vertebral and basilar arteries.

In tasks requiring a comparison of the duration of a reference and a test visual cue, the spatial position of test cue is likely to be implicitly coded, providing a form of a congruency effect or introducing a response bias according to the environmental scale or its vectorial reference. Brainstem evoked potentials and magnetic resonance imaging abnormalities in differential diagnosis of intracranial hypotension.

Summary Objective To compare brainstem acoustic evoked potentials (BAEP) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the differential diagnosis of intracranial hypotension (IH), Chiari malformation (CM) and sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). Methods BAEP were recorded in 18 IH, 18 CM, 20 SNHL patients and 52 controls. MRI were acquired in all IH and CM patients. Results Abnormal BAEP were observed in 94% of IH patients, in 33% of CM and 70% of SNHL patients. After recovery from IH, BAEP abnormalities disappeared. Functional properties of the brain during sleep under subchronic zopiclone administration in man.

Zopiclone, a non-benzodiazepine, has been shown to be efficient in the treatment of transient, short-term or chronic sleep disorders. Apart from its hypnotic effects zopiclone has anxiolytic, anticonvulsant and myorelaxant properties and is therefore hardly distinguishable from benzodiazepines. Dependence liability and discontinuation effects have been reported to be less pronounced. Therefore zopiclone seems to be a hypnotic drug which may cause fewer side effects than conventional benzodiazepines.
