Exploring the nexus between financial sector reforms and the emergence of digital banking culture – Evidences from a developing country

2017

Several financial and banking sector reform programs were instituted in different countries over the last three decades. The underlining purpose of these reforms was largely to improve banking sector supervision and regulation, introduce bank privatization mechanism, introduce clearance and settlement systems, infuse competition and to stimulate financial innovation. The objectives of this study are to 1) review the relevant published literature and market survey reports on the financial & banking sector reforms undertaken in Pakistan and elsewhere, 2) analyze how these reform programs develop digital banking culture and increase financial inclusion in the country and 3) guide future resear…

Finansiālās situācijas izpēte Swedbank AS

2021

Bakalaura darba autore, veicot AS “Swedbank” finansiālās situācijas analīzi, secina ka ko…

Analyzing turbulence in gravel bed channels

2005

In this paper, the results of an experimental investigation of the turbulence intensity in gravel bed channels are described. The runs were carried out by measuring, with an acoustic Doppler velocimeter, the turbulence intensity profile along six verticals of a given cross section in a laboratory flume. The analysis of the measured intensity distributions has shown the existence of two different regions, above and below the tops of the roughness elements, in which different intensity profiles occur. Furthermore, the measured profiles have shown a maximum of the turbulence intensity that decreases for increasing values of the roughness height, confirming that the turbulence damping efficienc…

With whom to merge? A tale of the Spanish banking deregulation process

2010

We propose a spatial competition model to study banks’ strategic responses to the asymmetric Spanish geographic deregulation process. We find that once the geographic deregulation process finishes, inter-regional mergers between savings banks are optimal whenever the economies of scale associated to merging activities are low. If there are large gains, then there will be mergers between savings and commercial banks.

Holes in the Dike: the global savings glut, U.S. house prices and the long shadow of banking deregulation

2015

We explore empirically how capital inflows into the US and financial deregulation within the United States interacted in driving the run-up (and subsequent decline) in US housing prices over the period 1990-2010. To obtain an ex ante measure of financial liberalization, we focus on the history of interstate-banking deregulation during the 1980s, i.e. prior to the large net capital inflows into the US from China and other emerging economies. Our results suggest a long shadow of deregulation: in states that opened their banking markets to out-of-state banks earlier, house prices were more sensitive to capital inflows. We provide evidence that global imbalances were a major positive funding sh…

Diversity in local cultivars of Pisum sativum collected from home gardens in Sweden

2015

Abstract Although one would assume that finding any local cultivars in home gardens in a modern society such as Sweden is unlikely, such cultivars were in fact found. More than 170 seed accessions of vegetables, pulses and other seed-propagated garden crops maintained in home gardens and dating back at least to the 1950s have been assembled following the nationwide ‘Seed Call’. Of these, 32 garden pea accessions were taxonomically characterized and compared with 43 accessions already present in the gene bank. In addition to morphological descriptors, SSR and retrotransposon-based iPBS markers were applied. Based on five SSR markers, potential duplicates could be located within nine pair/gro…

Vibrio pelagius: differences of the type strain deposited at various culture collections.

2000

A critical evaluation of published and own taxonomic and phylogenetic studies on Vibrio pelagius showed substantial diversity of strains received as type strains from various Culture Collections. The comparison of data based upon 16S rRNA sequence analyses, earlier genomic DNA-DNA similarity studies as well as physiological investigations and the original description indicate that Vibrio pelagius strains CECT 4202T and ATCC 25916T really represent the originally described type species whereas strains NCIMB 1900T and CIP 102762T highly likely are representatives of Vibrio natriegens.

German bank lending to industrial and non-industrial countries: driven by fundamentals or different treatment?

2005

This paper shows that the substantial disparity in German bank lending towards industrial (IC) and non-industrial (Non-IC) countries is largely explained by differences in countries' endowments and only to a minor extent by German banks' different treatment of these country groups. This is demonstrated by applying a decomposition technique to an augmented gravity model that is estimated for German foreign lending using a new micro panel data-set on individual claims from the Deutsche Bundesbank covering the period from 1996 to 2002.

Entrepreneurial choices depend on trust : Some global evidence

2022

Interpersonal trust and people’s trust in institutions are important components of social capital, which has been shown to have not only innate social value but also diverse direct and indirect positive social and economic impacts. Using data for an economically and globally diverse group of countries, we examine empirically how changes in interpersonal trust and trust in institutions affect entrepreneurship over time. Our findings suggest that (1) enhancing either type of trust leads to more entrepreneurial activity and (2) an increase in interpersonal trust causes a structural change in the composition of the TEA-type entrepreneurship. Increased trust reduces the share of relatively lower…

LA GOUVERNANCE MUTUALISTE COMME LEVIER DE CONTROLE

2012

The knowledge governance studies the way the administrators can limit the actions of the leaders otherwise than by disciplinary mechanisms. The study of the strategic process is a means to analyze more finely these mechanisms. The results indicate that the elected representatives participate actively in the definition of the strategy of their territory and it through several complementary control levers. Diagnostic and interactive levers are pointed out.
