Random Structural Modification of a Low-Band-Gap BODIPY-Based Polymer

2017

International audience; A BODIPY thiophene polymer modified by extending conjugation of the BODIPY chromophore is reported. This modification induces tunability of energy levels and therefore absorption wavelengths in order to target lower energies.

The electronic structure of zircon-type orthovanadates: Effects of high-pressure and cation substitution

2012

The electronic structure of four ternary-metal oxides containing isolated vanadate ions is studied. Zircon-type YVO4, YbVO4, LuVO4, and NdVO4 are investigated by high-pressure optical-absorption measurements up to 20 GPa. First-principles calculations based on density-functional theory were also performed to analyze the electronic band structure as a function of pressure. The electronic structure near the Fermi level originates largely from molecular orbitals of the vanadate ion, but cation substitution influence these electronic states. The studied ortovanadates, with the exception of NdVO4, undergo a zircon-scheelite structural phase transition that causes a collapse of the band-gap energ…

Influence of thermal process on structure and functional properties of emulsion-based edible films

2007

Abstract Synthetic food packaging is classically used to prevent mass transfer of various small molecules (water, gases, flavour compounds or solutes) between a food and its surrounding medium. In the case of composite foods, the development of edible films and coatings, applied between the different phases of this food is rising up. The increase of such food products shelf-life is indeed related to the barrier efficiency of these edible packaging against small molecules transfers. This is especially true for water transfer between compartments of different water activities in the same food, that leads to important physico-chemical changes and therefore to food quality deterioration. Film-f…

Approximate survival probability determination of hysteretic systems with fractional derivative elements

2018

Abstract A Galerkin scheme-based approach is developed for determining the survival probability and first-passage probability of a randomly excited hysteretic systems endowed with fractional derivative elements. Specifically, by employing a combination of statistical linearization and of stochastic averaging, the amplitude of the system response is modeled as one-dimensional Markovian Process. In this manner the corresponding backward Kolmogorov equation which governs the evolution of the survival probability of the system is determined. An approximate solution of this equation is sought by employing a Galerkin scheme in which a convenient set of confluent hypergeometric functions is used a…

Solving continuous models with dependent uncertainty: a computational approach

2013

This paper presents a computational study on a quasi-Galerkin projection-based method to deal with a class of systems of random ordinary differential equations (r.o.d.e.'s) which is assumed to depend on a finite number of random variables (r.v.'s). This class of systems of r.o.d.e.'s appears in different areas, particularly in epidemiology modelling. In contrast with the other available Galerkin-based techniques, such as the generalized Polynomial Chaos, the proposed method expands the solution directly in terms of the random inputs rather than auxiliary r.v.'s. Theoretically, Galerkin projection-based methods take advantage of orthogonality with the aim of simplifying the involved computat…

An Introduction to Kernel Methods

2009

Machine learning has experienced a great advance in the eighties and nineties due to the active research in artificial neural networks and adaptive systems. These tools have demonstrated good results in many real applications, since neither a priori knowledge about the distribution of the available data nor the relationships among the independent variables should be necessarily assumed. Overfitting due to reduced training data sets is controlled by means of a regularized functional which minimizes the complexity of the machine. Working with high dimensional input spaces is no longer a problem thanks to the use of kernel methods. Such methods also provide us with new ways to interpret the cl…

Heat semi-group and generalized flows on complete Riemannian manifolds

2011

Abstract We will use the heat semi-group to regularize functions and vector fields on Riemannian manifolds in order to develop Di Perna–Lions theory in this setting. Malliavinʼs point of view of the bundle of orthonormal frames on Brownian motions will play a fundamental role. As a byproduct we will construct diffusion processes associated to an elliptic operator with singular drift.

Penalties in the Theory of Equilibrium Tax Evasion: Solving King John’s Problem

2010

The authors characterize equilibria of an income reporting game with bounded returns and no commitment where detected tax evaders are charged the maximally feasible amount. Introducing partial commitment to punishment relief eliminates multiplicity of equilibria. The authors identify a unique limit equilibrium where the poorest citizens evade, intermediate citizens are honest, and the richest citizens are indifferent between evading and truth telling. For small tax rates and auditing cost, committing to a discretionary punishment relief scheme increases expected tax revenue.

On the Acceptability of the Ambient Tax Mechanism: An Experimental Investigation

2009

There is a common belief among nonpoint source pollution managers that ambient taxes are likely to raise acceptability problems. In this paper, we empirically assess the acceptability of ambient taxes. Concretely, we ask participants in an experiment to play the role of polluters who choose between (A) an ambient tax scheme and (B) an individual tax system (polluters are heterogeneous, with small, medium and large capacity polluters). In case (A), polluters' payoff depends on total emissions and on natural variability whereas in case (B) polluters earn a sure payoff. The sure payoff level reflects polluters' maximal profit under the individual tax system and ranges from 40% to 95% of pollut…
