Perceived collective continuity and social well-being: exploring the connections

2008

Research has shown that people tend to perceive the groups to which they belong (e.g., national groups) as temporally persistent. In this paper we argue that enhanced perceptions of collective continuity lead to lower levels of anomy and misfit, and to higher levels of social well-being (SWB). Furthermore, we argue that the effects of perceived collective continuity (PCC) on SWB are mediated by collective self-esteem (CSE). Finally, we contend that PCC has positive effects on perceived group entitativity (PGE), which in turn has a positive influence on CSE. This model is tested by means of a cross-sectional study using a sample of Spanish nationals (N = 145) drawn from the general public. R…

INGENIERÍA GENÉTICA E INDUSTRIA AGROALIMENTARIA: VENTAJAS E INCONVENIENTES GENETIC ENGINEERING AND FOOD INDUSTRY: ADVANTAGES AND INCONVENIENCES EXEÑE…

1999

Abstract Resumen Resumo Nowadays biotechnology allows to perform accurate changes on the genetic material of organisms, being a very important tool in food industry. However just a few recombinant products can be found in the market, as a result of the social repulse against these kind of foods. According to the Community Normative, it is necessary to evaluate the safety for human being and environment security previous to introducing a recombinant food into the market. In this work, the recommended protocols for several organisms to attend this evaluation on a rational way are reviewed. These protocols are fundamentally based on the SAFEST elements (Safety Assessment of Food by Equivalence…

Biotechnology, Ethics, and Society: The Case of Genetic Manipulation

2015

Biotechnologies are transforming human existence and their potential ever increasing. The discovery of the DNA double helix in 1953 paved the way for genetic medicine and even the possibility to alter the genetic makeup of human beings. Since then, the capacity of the human being to learn about and intervene in his own biological makeup has not ceased to grow.

Promoting influenza prevention for elderly people in Hong Kong using health action process approach: study protocol.

2018

People 65 years or older are at greater risk of serious complications from the seasonal influenza compared with young. To promote elderly people’s behavioral compliance toward influenza prevention, the aim of the current project is to develop, implement, and evaluate a theory-based low-administration-cost intervention building on a leading psychological theory, the Health Action Process Approach (HAPA). The target group is Hong Kong Chinese elderly people aged 65 or older who rarely or never adopt any preventive actions. This project will be conducted in three phases over 24 months. In phase 1, intervention program will be developed building on the HAPA theoretical framework which comprises…

On the Complexity and Wholeness of Human Beings: Husserlian Perspectives

2017

At the beginning of Being and Time, Heidegger rejects Husserl’s classical phenomenology on three grounds: he claims that Husserlian phenomenology is impaired by indeterminate concepts, by naïve personalism, and by obscurities in its account of individuation. The paper studies the validity of this early critique by explicating Husserl’s discourse on human persons as bodily-spiritual beings and by clarifying his account of the principles by which such beings can be individuated. The paper offers three types of considerations. After a summary of Heidegger’s early critique of Husserl, the second section of the paper distinguishes between two dimensions of Husserl’s discourse on human persons. I…

DNA Fingerprinting as a Tool of Paternity Testing in Germany

1991

Soon after the discovery of the ABO blood groups by Landsteiner their forensic application was suggested by Max Richter at the 74. Versammlung Deutscher Naturforscher und Arzte at Karlsbad (Karlovy Vary) in 1902 [1], Landsteiner’s Nobel lecture “Uber individuelle Unterschiede des menschlichen Blutes” in 1930 [2] provided a landmark on the path towards the discovery of so-called hypervariable minisatellite regions of human DNA by Alec Jeffreys in 1985 [3]. Since the individual patterns of any human being seemed to be unique it is well understood that this achievement was immediately welcomed with great enthusiasm by the scientific community and the public opinion. Soon thereafter, however, s…
