Finnish welfare service system from the standpoint of women in vulnerable life situations

In this chapter, the authors analyse how the Finnish welfare service system, as it consists of different institutions and professionals, meets or fails to meet the needs of women in varying vulnerable life situations. The participants are women with severe substance abuse problems, women sentenced for committing a crime and poor lone mothers living on basic social benefits. The findings show that women’s experiences of encounters with welfare professionals as well as their access to and use of the services share a number of characteristics. The article deals with the significance and role of the references to officium and beneficium in D. 13.6.17.3, concerning the commentary of Paulus to the iudicium contrarium commodati. In this text ‘officium’ expresses ethic dutifulness tout court; and the key-point of Paulus’ reasoning consists in underlining the coexistence of an ethical and a juridical dimension within the legal operation of commodare. In the light of the comparison between this and some other texts of the same Paulus (D. 17.1.1.4; 39.4.21; 43.1.2.1), it seems possible to suggest – as trace for a specific, future investigation – a peculiar attention of this jurist for ethical perspectives connected to legal institutions.

The representatives of the liturgical movement knew that the renewal of the religious life of the faithful required a proper definition of the essence of the liturgy and of what the Church is. The transition to parenthood represents a period of considerable change. Much of the change is positive as parents experience the inherent emotional and social benefits of becoming a parent. However, it is also a period of considerable challenge and stress, which can have deleterious effects on health and well-being. Increased demands of caring for an infant can lead to loss of sleep, limited ‘leisure’ time, restrictions on social life, and difficulties in managing ‘work-life’ balance.
