A study on the sensitivities of simulated aerosol optical properties to composition and size distribution using airborne measurements

We present a flexible framework to calculate the optical properties of atmospheric aerosols at a given relative humidity based on their composition and size distribution. The similarity of this framework to climate model parameterisations allows rapid and extensive sensitivity tests of the impact of uncertainties in data or of new measurements on climate relevant aerosol properties. The data collected by the FAAM BAe-146 aircraft during the EUCAARI-LONGREX and VOCALS-REx campaigns have been used in a closure study to analyse the agreement between calculated and measured aerosol optical properties for two very different aerosol types. High performance composites containing perfluoropolyethers-functionalized carbon-based nanoparticles: Rheological behavior and wettability

Abstract Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE) based composites filled with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and carbon black (CB) modified by perfluoropolyethers (PFPE) have been formulated. All composites show a segregated morphology with nanofillers selectively localized at the polymer particle–particle interface. The composites rheological properties have been deeply investigated: the PFPE functionalities linked on CNTs facilitate the semi-3D nanofillers network formation in the composites that show a solid-like behaviour even at lower investigated filler contents, reaching the rheological percolation threshold at lower nanofiller content than bare CNTs filled composites. Electric and elastic properties of conductive polymeric nanocomposites on macro- and nanoscales

Abstract In the past several years, the macroscopic electric and elastic properties of conductive polymeric composites have been studied from the viewpoint of such applications as thermistors and pressure sensors. In particular, we studied carbon black (CB) polymeric nanocomposites on macro- and nanoscales, using polyisoprene as the composite matrix. The filler component was an extra conductive carbon black (PRINTEX XE2, DEGUSSA) with a primary particle diameter of about 30 nm. A very strong reversible tensoresistive effect of electric resistance dependence on uniaxial tension deformation was observed in composites with the 10 carbon black mass parts added to 100 mass parts of polyisoprene.…

Black hole lightning due to particle acceleration at subhorizon scales

Supermassive black holes with masses of millions to billions of solar masses are commonly found in the centers of galaxies. Astronomers seek to image jet formation using radio interferometry, but still suffer from insufficient angular resolution. An alternative method to resolve small structures is to measure the time variability of their emission. Here, we report on gamma-ray observations of the radio galaxy IC 310 obtained with the MAGIC telescopes revealing variability with doubling time scales faster than 4.8 min.
