Effect of concurrent resistance and sprint training on body composition and cardiometabolic health indicators in masters cyclists
2016
In older previously sedentary individuals endurance training imposes a more effective stimulus to enhance cardiometabolic health compared with resistance or sprint training. We examined the effect of replacing a portion of endurance training with combined resistance and/or sprint training and how this influences cardiometabolic health indicators in masters endurance cyclists. Twenty-seven well-trained male road cyclists (53.7± 8.2 years) were allocated to a resistance and track sprintcycling training group (RTC, n= 10), an endurance and track sprint-cycling group (ETC, n = 7) or a control endurance group (CTRL, n = 10). Both the RTC and ETC groups completed a 12-week intervention of specifi…

Masteroppgave folkehelsevitenskap ME516 - Universitetet i Agder 2017 Objective: To explore whether there is an association between socioeconomic status and maternal body mass index, and duration of partial breastfeeding/exclusive breastfeeding of Norwegian infants in 2016. Design: Cross-sectional design. Baseline data from a randomized controlled trial, collected by a Food Frequency Questionnaire. Setting: Recruitment was done through Facebook and child health care centres in 2016. In total 1048 infants/parents were interested in participating in the study Early Food for Future Health. Subjects: A total of 715 infant/mother- dyads completed the questionnaire when the child was between 5 and…
Relationship between mothers' thoughts and behaviors and their daughters' development of the body image
2019
Behaviors related to body image are influenced by learning and sociocultural environment; the parents can contribute to their children’s food problems through social values that they are supporting. Furthermore, it is known that during the development of the body image of girls it is fundamental the identification with the parent of the same sex. However, the extent of maternal influence is unknown, so our aim is to analyze the relationship between thoughts and behaviors of mothers and the development of their daughters’ body image, specifically on the variables: perceived image and ideal image, satisfaction and concern about body image, and social network behaviors. The study involved 53 p…
Bone marrow-derived progenitors are greatly reduced in patients with severe COPD and low-BMI.
2009
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients have reduced circulating hemopoietic progenitors. We hypothesized that severity of COPD parallels the decrease in progenitors and that the reduction in body mass index (BMI) could be associated with more severe bone marrow dysfunction. We studied 39 patients with moderate to very severe COPD (18 with low-BMI and 21 with normal-BMI) and 12 controls. Disease severity was associated to a greater reduction in circulating progenitors. Proangiogenetic and inflammatory markers correlated with disease severity parameters. Compared to normal-BMI patients, low-BMI patients showed: greater reduction in circulating progenitors; higher VEGF-A, VEGF-C…

Purpose: To examine the potential sex differences in adaptations to combined endurance and strength training in recreationally endurance trained (eumenorrheic) women (n = 9) and men (n = 10). Methods: Isometric (ISOMmax) and dynamic bilateral leg press (1RM), countermovement jump (CMJ), running performance (3,000 m time trial), lean mass and body fat % (LEAN and FAT% determined by dual X-ray absorptiometry) as well as serum testosterone and cortisol (TES and COR, respectively, measured using hormone-specific immunoassay kits) were examined before a control period and pre, mid, and post a supervised 10-week combined high-intensity interval endurance training (4 × 4 min intervals and 3 × 3 × …
The role of paraoxonase 1 (PON1) as an oxidation marker, in muscle improvement after increased beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) in blood, in patients with …
2020
Various studies have concluded that in multiple sclerosis (MS) metabolic changes related to energy alterations are generated at the mitochondrial level. These changes produce loss of muscle mass and lead to high levels of oxidative stress related to low levels of the enzyme Paraoxonase 1 (PON1). The ketone bodies, mainly beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), restore this energetic alteration by improving muscular activity. This pilot study was conducted over 4 months with 51 patients diagnosed with MS, randomly divided into: an intervention group that received an isocaloric diet of a Mediterranean origin supplemented with 60 ml of coconut oil; and a control group that received the same base diet but …
