A tailored telephone and email based exercise intervention induced reductions in various measures of body composition in physically inactive adults: …

2018

Obesity prevalence has increased the past decades and has become a serious public health problem. The aim of this six-month assessor-blinded, parallel-group randomized controlled trial was to assess the effect of a tailored telephone and email-based exercise intervention on various measures of body composition in a sample of apparently healthy and physically inactive adults. A total of 111 volunteering adults (40–55 yr) in Southern Norway were randomly assigned to an intervention group (IG; n = 39) or a no-information control group (CG; n = 50), by random allocation numbering. The IG received feedback on their health-related physical fitness, information on guidelines and recommendations fo…

High-Intensity Interval and Resistance Training Improve Health Outcomes in Older Adults With Coronary Disease.

2021

Both high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and resistance exercises (R) are used in cardiac rehabilitation in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). However, the combined effect of an HIIT + R exercise program in older adults with CAD is not well investigated. The study's purpose was to assess the changes in anthropometric parameters, physical activity, functional capacity, physiological parameters, and quality of life (QoL) in this population following a combined HIIT + R program. The study was a 2-group (n = 45 each) randomized controlled single-blinded trial. The study was done at a treatment clinic of a tertiary hospital. The mean age of participants was 69.23 ± 4.9 years. The HII…

Whole-body magnetic resonance imaging (WB-MRI) in oncology: an Italian survey.

2019

Purpose: To perform a survey among all members of the Italian Society of Medical and Interventional Radiology (SIRM) to assess how whole-body MRI (WB-MRI) is performed in oncologic patients in Italy. Methods: On March 2019, we administered an online poll to all SIRM members about their use of WB-MRI in 2018 asking 15 questions regarding oncologic indications, imaging protocol, use of contrast media, experience in WB-MRI, duration of scan time and reporting time. Results: Forty-eight members participated to the survey. WB-MRIs/total MRIs ratio was 1%. Lymphoma was the most common indication (17/48, 35%), followed by myeloma and prostate cancer, with these three tumors representing the most c…

Vitellogenesis inhibition in Oncopeltus fasciatus females (Heteroptera: Lygaeidae) exposed to cadmium

2005

Abstract Newly moulted females of the insect Oncopeltus fasciatus were exposed to cadmium (Cd) dissolved in the drinking water (50–400 mg l −1 Cd) for 5 days. Cd exposure delayed ovarian maturation and inhibited egg production. Exposure to Cd, moreover, decreased hemolymph levels of the two major vitellogenin polypeptides of O. fasciatus , VG1 and VG2, in a concentration-dependent way, probably by a reduction in their synthesis. The ovarian levels of VG1 and VG2 were also decreased in Cd-exposed females. It was next investigated whether Cd effects might be a consequence of the endocrine disruption of vitellogenin synthesis, which is controlled by juvenile hormone (JH). JH replacement therap…

Is karate effective in improving postural control?

2012

Background: Performing complex motor skills, such as the ones performed by karate athletes, requires a great sense of balance. Because the posturo-kinetic performance seems to be improved by sport practice, especially by sports involving a lot of posturokinetic activities, the aim of this review was to critically analyse the scientific literature in order to appraise whether any positive correlation between karate and improved postural control is scientifically supported. Material/Methods: The online search engines Scirus and Medline were used for generating the data. A comprehensive literature search was conducted based on the following keywords: “karate”, “postural control” and “body sway…

2021

Purpose: Moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) positively influences bone mineral content (BMC) in prepubertal children, but it is unknown whether this relationship is partially mediated by free leptin index. The aim of this study was to examine whether the relationship between MVPA and total body less head (TBLH) BMC is mediated or moderated by free leptin index in prepubertal children. Methods: We performed a cross-sectional analysis on 401 children (194 girls) from baseline examinations of the Physical Activity and Nutrition in Childhood Study. We applied the four-way decomposition mediation analysis method to assess whether free leptin index, measured from fasted blood samples, …

Body Mass Index and Cardiac Events in Elderly Patients

2009

Body Mass Index has been challenged as an anthropometric measurement in elderly patients. Recent data, even in elderly patients, has demonstrated that elevated body mass index affords a worse long-term prognosis, although the magnitude of this relationship weakens as one ages. Underweight patients, possibly due to elements of sarcopenia and/or frailty, are also at a higher risk of overall mortality. A number of inflammatory mediators may be responsible for such factors which likely contribute to the increased risk of cardiovascular events observed. Although body mass index has been implicated in the development of heart failure, coronary artery disease and mediates its effects through other…

Bilaterale Acetabulumfrakturen der vorderen Pfeiler und Wirbelkörperfraktur nach alkoholinduziertem Krampfanfall

1996

The case of a 54-year-old male with a compression fracture of the T 12 vertebral body and a bilateral anterior column fracture of the acetabulum is presented. The origin of this rare combination of fractures is explained by the action of the patient's own muscle force on bone of very poor quality. The treatment of these lesions is comparable to the treatment of similar fractures in bone of normal quality.
