The uptake of promazine, chlorpromazine, desmethylpromazine, and desmethylchlorpromazine into the isolated rat brain was determined in relation to their lipophilic character and their binding to albumin and erythroeytes in the perfusion media. The desmethylmetabolites showed about the same degree of binding as their parent compounds promazine and chlorpromazine. On the other hand the partition coefficients of promazine and chlorpromazine were about 10 times higher than those of their desmethylmetabolites. Whereas Asiatic lions obviously have the same level of brain size as leopards (Panthera pardus), African lions have higher brain capacities. A third level seems to be represented by the upper pleistocene American lion,Panthera leo atrox. These results permit us to reject some conceptions ofHerre andRohrs13 concerning the quantitative expression of mammalian brain evolution.

Left but not right temporal involvement in opaque idiom comprehension: a repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation study

Abstract It has been suggested that figurative language, which includes idioms, is controlled by the right hemisphere. We tested the right hemisphere hypothesis by using repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) to transiently disrupt the function of the frontal and temporal areas of the right versus left hemisphere in a group of normal participants involved in a task of opaque idiom versus literal sentence comprehension. Brain electrical source analysis of primary cortical components of the tibial nerve somatosensory evoked potential using regional sources.

Tibial nerve somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) show higher amplitudes ipsilateral to the side of stimulation, whereas subdural recordings revealed a source in the foot area of the contralateral hemisphere. We now investigated this paradoxical lateralization by performing a brain electrical source analysis in the P40 time window (34-46 ms). The tibial nerve was stimulated behind the ankle (8 subjects). On each side, 2048 stimuli were applied twice. SEPs were recorded using 32 magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-verified electrode positions (bandpass 0.5-500 Hz). The AX-PET demonstrator—Design, construction and characterization

Abstract Axial PET is a novel geometrical concept for Positron Emission Tomography (PET), based on layers of long scintillating crystals axially aligned with the bore axis. The axial coordinate is obtained from arrays of wavelength shifting (WLS) plastic strips placed orthogonally to the crystals. This article describes the design, construction and performance evaluation of a demonstrator set-up which consists of two identical detector modules, used in coincidence. Each module comprises 48 LYSO crystals of 100 mm length and 156 WLS strips. Crystals and strips are readout by Geiger-mode Avalanche Photo Diodes (G-APDs). A novel arousal-based individual screening reveals susceptibility and resilience to PTSD-like phenotypes in mice

Translational animal models for studying post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are valuable for elucidating the poorly understood neurobiology of this neuropsychiatric disorder. These models should encompass crucial features, including persistence of PTSD-like phenotypes triggered after exposure to a single traumatic event, trauma susceptibility/resilience and predictive validity. Here we propose a novel arousal-based individual screening (AIS) model that recapitulates all these features. Polysorbate-80 coating enhances uptake of polybutylcyanoacrylate (PBCA)-nanoparticles by human and bovine primary brain capillary endothelial cells

Certain drugs such as dalargin, loperamide or tubocurarine are not transported across the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and therefore exhibit no effects on the central nervous system. However, effects on the central nervous system can be observed when these drugs are loaded onto polybutylcyanoacrylate (PBCA)-nanoparticles and coated with polysorbate 80. The mechanism by which these complexed nanoparticles cross the BBB and exhibit their effects has not been elucidated.
