Are quality management practices enough to improve process innovation?

2015

The popularity of quality management as a system for continuous improvement has not been accompanied by deep theoretical understanding of its effects on process innovation. In this work, the resource-based view serves as the basis for the construction of a model designed to explain the effects of quality management practices (QMP) on process innovation performance and the mediating role of dynamic capabilities in this relationship. The empirical data were analysed using the structural equation modelling technique by examining 6 competing models that represent full, partial mediation and non-mediation relationships on a sample of 550 Spanish industrial companies. The findings indicate that t…

Employee opportunities for self-directed learning at technology organisations : features and frames of self-directed learning projects

2020

The importance of self-directed learning (SDL) in a business environment has been highlighted as a way to increase an organisation’s competitiveness and innovativeness. While organisations increasingly require SDL from employees, less attention is paid to the situations and frames enabling it. This study examines self-directed learning projects (SDLPs), situations in which SDL is realised as an individual or collective phenomenon. Based on ethnographic research, this study’s data consisted of field notes, field records and interviews. I used analysis of key incidents and ethnographic content analysis as an analytical tools. Four types of SDLPs was identified in the organisations studied: or…

Professional identity in relation to vocational teachers’ work : an identity-centred approach to professional development

2018

This paper reports a study on teachers’ professional identity and work in vocational education. The findings showed that vocational teachers’ work included vocational teaching within the school, developmental work, technology-enhanced work, professional duties outside the school, and educational duties within the school. Furthermore, the study revealed the harmonious and tensioned relationships between these elements of the work and teachers’ identities. Recognition of the nuanced nature of these relationships provides a perspective for promoting teachers’ professional development. From a practical perspective, there is a need to support vocational teachers’ identity work and the adoption o…

The Use of Multimodal Resources by Technical Managers and Their Peers in Meetings Using English as the Business Lingua Franca

2020

Background: Engineers increasingly work and advance their careers in international business settings. As technical managers, they need management and technical skills when working with different stakeholders with whom they may not share a common first language. Studies have revealed that informal oral communication skills are of prime importance for global engineers who face challenges in building shared meaning and formulating clear messages in meetings with non-native speakers of English. This article proposes that studying the use of multimodal resources (spoken language, gaze, gestures, and objects) in meetings can unpack how work tasks are accomplished in business through different com…

Temporality and firm de-internationalization : Three historical approaches

2022

This paper contributes to process-oriented international business research by showing how three distinct historical approaches can enrich theoretical understanding concerning temporality in firm de-internationalization. First, we show how comparative historical analysis unleashes the causal structure of the process and provides explanatory understanding of the temporal grounding of the mechanisms driving the process. Second, we explicate how interpretive history reveals the embeddedness of de-internationalization in the prevailing spirit of the time. Finally, we consider how poststructuralist history enables us to focus on the strong subjectivity of individuals in which multiple temporaliti…

Un significativo arresto della giurisprudenza di merito sull’opaco confine tra affitto d’azienda e locazione di immobile c.d. commerciale con pertine…

2022

Author analyzes an interesting decision concerning a traditional topic of business law: the recognition of the distinguishing features between a tenancy of a business unit, on the one hand, and a lease of immovable property for nonresidential use, having a productive purpose, on the other. The dispute concerns the judicial qualification of a contract between a company managing a shopping centre and a company operating therein. In particular, according to the case law of legitimacy, there is a lease of urban property for commercial use instead of a lease (of a business branch) pursuant to article 2562 of the Italian Civil Code, where there is no pre-existing business complex, consisting of i…

Rationality, experiences or identity work? Sensemaking of emotionally tense experiences of organizational sustainability

2021

Purpose Although emotional tensions related to organizational sustainability have been identified, little is known about how employees aim to resolve such situations. This study aims to explore how employees use sensemaking to resolve emotionally tense situations concerning organizational sustainability. Design/methodology/approach The authors studied a case in which, while employees attached positive emotions to organizational sustainability, external stakeholders viewed it negatively. Specifically, the study analyzed how employees used sensemaking to resolve such tense experiences and how this sensemaking eventually influenced their actions. To this end, the authors interviewed 25 employ…

Bureaucratic, Professional and Managerial Power in University Tenure Track Recruitment

2022

AbstractIn this chapter, our interest lies in analysing the different powers in recruitment and, particularly, how they are manifested in the new tenure track model in technical fields in Finland. Traditionally, recruitment in higher education has mostly relied on the bureaucratic application of processes and on academics, representing professional power, evaluating academic merit. The new university legislation, granting universities more autonomy in recruiting, has allowed the development of increasingly strategic recruitment models. The novel tenure track recruitment criteria exceed traditional notions of individual merits to include assessments of the strategic visions of universities a…

Réalités (ou apparences ?) de l'hyperréalité : une application au cas du tourisme de loisirs

2005

Although hyperreality is not a subject commonly studied in marketing, it characterizes an increasing number of leisure and tourist places. In this article, we build a theoretical model to have a better understanding of this phenomenon in order to define it. This model as well as a study of leisure tourist universes help us to identify the attributes and commercial strategies that are used to create a hyperreal environment. We also explore the strategic opportunities and threats associated with developing hyperreality on commercial grounds.

Drivers’ experiences during floods: Investigating the psychological influences underpinning decisions to avoid driving through floodwater

2018

Abstract A major risk factor for many flood-related drownings is driving through floodwater. We aimed to understand Australian drivers’ experiences and beliefs with respect to avoid driving through floodwater using the theory of planned behaviour as a framework. Study 1 (N = 23) used a qualitative design to gain an in-depth understanding of individuals’ experiences with driving through floodwater. Study 2 (N = 157) used a survey-based design to identify the factors related to this behaviour including knowledge, beliefs, and social-cognitive factors. In Study 1, drivers identified a range of advantages (e.g., didn’t damage car), disadvantages (e.g., inconvenient, but not so terrible), barrie…
